    Effects of UV filter pollutants on the growth of cucurbits and possible implications for humans

    One main area of concern is the use of personal care products and pharmaceuticals in society and their long-term persistence when released into the environment (Chaturvedi et al. 2021). Cucurbits, however, are well-known for taking up pollutants (Namiki et al. 2013, Christou et al. 2019, Komives et al. 2009), so it essential to ensure that these pollutants do not negatively affect growth or productivity of plants. These plants are particularly useful in society because they have many health benefits and are consumed regularly by humans. While much research has been done on how much of the pollutant travels throughout the plant, little research has been done on environmentally relevant concentrations or on the outwardly effect of plant production. In this experiment, cucumber (Cucumis sativus), zucchini (Cucurbita pepo L.), and cantaloupe (Cucumis melo) (Bisognin 2002) are used to determine whether or not ultraviolet (UV) filters, particularly those found in sunscreens, affect the growth of cucurbit plants. Additionally, environmentally relevant concentrations are used to ensure the results can be representative of real-world situations. 90 plants were grown in a greenhouse for 12 weeks while their height, leaf production, flower production, and fruit production were monitored on a weekly basis. While most of the data did not find significant ANOVA results, showing that sunscreen pollutants at these levels do not affect plant production, cucumber showed significant results between control and high concentration treatments for growth and flower production. Both of these factors can lead to decreased crop yield, with higher concentrations amplifying these effects. There were also significant results for t-tests between zucchini plants using tap water as opposed to deionized water (DIW) for leaf and flower production, but it is unclear as to whether the type of water was the cause of this result. These results lead to a need for further research into the uptake of pollutants by cucurbit plants to ensure there is not a negative effect on their growth as pollutants may increase in the future

    Louisville Metro Government has a multitude of quantitative data on demographics, health, and air quality in Rubbertown fenceline communities. This study explores how community-level research allows us to have a more robust understanding of the impact of environmental injustice. Spatial data was utilized to map various health variables, zoning, and community spaces relative to Rubbertown chemical facilities. A semi-structured interview was then conducted with a local environmental justice activist to gain a better understanding of their experience and the barriers to environmental justice for the residents of West Louisville. This study improves our understanding of community needs and adds a narrative to the existing data; providing a foundation for policy work that would truly benefit the community and address the health injustices faced

    Why Do They Do It?: Exploring the Phenomena of Familicide and Anomie Through a Case Study of the Coleman Family Murders

    In his book Suicide, Emile Durkheim posited that there were four types of suicide present in a society. In particular, anomic suicide was defined as a suicide committed during a time of social unrest and change, spurred on by anomie. Anomie is defined as the breakdown of social norms in a society. This project applies Durkheim’s theories of suicide and anomie onto the concept of familicide, or the killing of one’s spouse and one or more children. Through the lens of Durkheim’s concept of anomie, this paper defines the idea of anomic familicide, which looks at motives and reasoning for familicide from an anomic perspective. To do this it, it uses a case study of Christopher Coleman, who committed a familicide in 2009 when he killed his wife and two children

    Queering TV in the Age of TikTok

    This thesis asks how fans have created their own queer representation on the social media platform TikTok. It looks at the tools afforded by TikTok that fans have used to “ship” non-canon woman-loving-woman couples and to “queer” television show characters. It also examines how fans on TikTok have reacted to television plotlines they were unhappy with, such as the “bury your gays” trope. Four shows, all after the year 2000, are used as case studies. These shows are Wednesday (2022-present), Criminal Minds (2005-present), Stranger Things (2016-present), and Killing Eve (2018-2022). Numerous TikTok videos and comments revolving around each show are also analyzed. This thesis finds that fans have utilized TikTok and its affordances to turn female television characters into positive queer representation through the use of edits, audios, comments, captions, and more

    Evaluating an Evidence-Based Quality Improvement Initiative for Food Insecurity Screening and Referral in Adults with Diabetes Initiating Continuous Glucose Monitor Therapy

    Diabetes affects 37 million people annually in the United States, with direct medical costs exceeding 237billionperyear(AmericanDiabetesAssociation,2018;Xuetal.,2018).Complicationsaccountforupto64237 billion per year (American Diabetes Association, 2018; Xu et al., 2018). Complications account for up to 64% of diabetes-related expenses, emphasizing the importance of glycemic stability in preventing costly and debilitating outcomes (Dieleman et al., 2016). Diet and nutrition, essential for glycemic control, are often undermined by food insecurity—defined as inconsistent access to adequate, nutritious food—affecting 16% of adults with diabetes (Casagrande et al., 2022; Kirby et al., 2021). Food insecurity is linked to higher HbA1c levels, increased complications, and hospitalizations (Thomas et al., 2021). A 1% reduction in HbA1c correlates with annual savings of 545 in total care and 555 in diabetes-specific care (Lage & Boye, 2020), yet food-insecure individuals with diabetes face 4,414 higher healthcare costs annually (Berkowitz, Seligman, & Basu, 2018). This quality improvement project implemented a food insecurity screening program using the USDA Six-Item Short Form, coupled with referrals to community resources for individuals with positive screenings. The goal was to enhance diabetes management and glycemic stability by addressing food insecurity. Outcomes included improved time-in-range (TIR), glucose management indicator (GMI%) stability, better access to food, and enhanced food security scores. These findings highlight the power of targeted interventions to advance health equity, improve diabetes outcomes, and reduce healthcare costs, demonstrating the critical need for addressing social determinants of health in diabetes care

    A Collaborative Framework for the Inclusion of Students with Extensive Support Needs: A Case Study

    Research indicates that the academic growth and social development of students with extensive support needs are generally best facilitated in general education classrooms. Students with extensive support needs are those whose needs impact learning to the degree that they require specially designed instruction based on or using extended learning standards and often alternate state assessments. The most recent data indicate that students served within many of the categories of Individuals with Disabilities Education Act have seen significant growth in their rates of inclusion. However, this increase in inclusion has not happened for students with extensive support needs. Emerging theories about this lack of inclusion for students with extensive support needs include undefined roles for the individual education program team and general education teacher biases against inclusion coupled with high workloads for general education teachers. This mixed methods case study focuses on the implementation of a collaborative framework in three elementary school cases bound by students with extensive support needs who are placed in disability specific programs for 60% or more of their school day. The framework guides inclusion through an annual Student Support Plan created by the Individualized Education Program team, weekly Quick Plans, and ongoing coaching for both the general education teacher and paraprofessional. Data were collected via interviews, documents, surveys, audio, and video recording. Through multiple rounds of coding, partnering of qualitative and quantitative data, use of propositions, and explanation building, the analysis answered the research questions: (1) How do the school-based IEP team members of a student with extensive support needs perceive the student’s inclusion, and how does their perception change after implementation of a collaborative framework? (2) How does the IEP team perceive the implementation of an inclusion coaching intervention

    Non-cognitive factors influencing the development of clinical judgment in undergraduate nursing students

    A nurse’s ability to form sound clinical judgments is directly related to safe patient outcomes. Pre-licensure nursing programs are focused on developing students’ clinical judgment ability; however, an academic-practice gap continues to exist. The Implicit Theory of Intelligence and Achievement Goal Theory provide insight into how mindset beliefs and goal orientation impact the teaching and learning environment. The performance goal orientation, ineffective learning strategies, and avoidance of challenging tasks associated with a fixed mindset may negatively impact the development of clinical judgment. This exploratory study sought to determine if there is a relationship between the non-cognitive factors, mindset beliefs and achievement goal orientation and the development of clinical judgment in undergraduate nursing students. Using a combination of observation and survey methods, the researcher evaluated participants’ performance during a simulated event using the Lasater Clinical Judgment Rubric and compared performance with participants mindset beliefs in the clinical reasoning domain using a modified version of the Implicit Theories of Intelligence Scale, and goal orientation using the Achievement Goal Questionnaire-Revised. A relationship between clinical judgment and mindset beliefs was found in the overall sample with greater growth mindset beliefs being associated with better clinical judgment. No correlation between clinical judgment and achievement goal orientation was found. These findings provide support for further exploration into growth mindset promoting interventions and their impact on nursing students’ clinical judgment
