    Margin in Life and Stress of Community College Adult Learners

    Nontraditional adult learners (NALs) account for near 40% of all students enrolled in postsecondary institutions in the United States. NALs differ from traditional college students in that they are more likely to be over the age of 23, have dependents, be a single parent, or be employed full-time in conjunction with college enrollment. During the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the years following, community colleges suffered substantial enrollment declines raising concerns for both state policymakers and higher education administrators. This study sought to understand the relationship of perceived stress and perceived margin to meet new challenges of NALs enrolled at a public two-year community college in the years following the COVID-19 pandemic. Undergraduate students (n=118) age twenty-five and older participated in the study utilizing the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) and Margin in Life Scale (MILS). A Pearson Correlation showed a moderate negative correlation between the two instrument composite scores, with an increase in perceived capacity to meet new challenges resulting in a decrease in perceived stress. A Linear Regression analysis showed age was a predictor of stress with a small effect, with stress decreasing as age increases. For gender, there was a statistically significant difference in mean stress scores between males and females in a Pearson Correlation analysis with a moderate effect. These findings have implications for how higher education institutions measure stress and the psychometric properties of the MILS to adequately measure perceived margin

    Anne Rice’s gothic novel “Interview with the Vampire” (1976) has not only stood the test of time as a cult classic, but has continued to be told and retold through a film adaptation (1994) and recent AMC television production (2022). Looking through the lens of adaptation theory and the ideas of Nina Auerbach in Our Vampires, Ourselves, this presentation highlights how both the original novel and subsequent adaptations use the figure of the vampire to represent the social changes of the era of its creation, particularly in regards to queerness and sexuality

    An exploration of the effectiveness of Xanthorrhiza simplicissima and its secondary alkaloids as antibiotics against Staphylococcus aureus with the use of Reserpine

    Xanthorhiza simplicissima is a plant that is steeped in medical history. It has been used for hundreds of years by the Native Americans, and later by the Europeans, of Appalachia for its medicinal properties. One of the most useful medical applications of this plant are its antibiotic properties, as typified by its use as a tea that was consumed to treat mouth sores. These antibiotic properties can be attributed to some of its secondary alkaloids such as berberine, liriodenine, oxyacanthine, and magnoflorine. These compounds have been studied in other systems; however, oxyacanthine and magnoflorine have not been researched in tandem with the use of efflux pump inhibitors. Neither has the X. simplicissima extract itself. Efflux pumps allow bacteria to exude antibiotics and other cytotoxic molecules out of their cells. The disabling of these pumps has been shown to greatly increase the effectiveness of antibiotics and antimicrobial compounds. This study examines the effect of efflux pump inhibitor reserpine on the antimicrobial effectiveness of magnoflorine, oxyacanthine, and the X simplicissima extract against Staphylococcus aureus, with norfloxacin as the control antibiotic. The Yellowroot extract and its two secondary alkaloids have been found to inhibit S. aureus growth. Reserpine alone did not show good inhibitory against S. aureus. However, reserpine being an efflux pump inhibitor, exhibited great synergistic effects with oxyacanthine, magnoflorine, and the yellowroot extract, either halving their minimum inhibitory concentrations or making them more effective at lower concentrations

This proposed theatre company strives to become a quintessential meeting place for all Kentuckians to explore their history, create new Kentucky-based work, and represent the authentic experience of the diverse regions of the state, from the large population centers of Louisville to the mountainous Appalachia. Reflecting on the current struggles facing regional and professional theatre companies across the country in the post-pandemic entertainment economy, the strategic planning of this theatre outlines the necessity of institutional visibility, audience engagement, and the adaptability of the theatrical model. This project coalesces research into the institutions of regional theatre, arts administration models, and Kentucky’s theatre and arts tradition into an applied project that proposes a new, culturally relevant, Kentucky-based theatre company

    Cancer is currently the second leading cause of death in the US. While much progress has been made, there is still a significant need for novel therapies. Chalcones are privileged, natural products that have shown cytotoxic activity and potential as chemotherapeutics in multiple cancerous cell lines. Additionally, bismuth complexes of small organic molecules have been shown to have anti-tumor activity. The anti-proliferative activity of phenylbismuthbis(4-carboxychalcone), a bismuth-coordinated chalcone was assessed in multiple cancer cell lines using MTS assays. The compound demonstrated micromolecular inhibition. Additionally, mechanism of action studies were performed to assess if the anti-proliferative activity seen is due to an induction of apoptosis. Western blotting suggests drug treatment with phenylbismuthbis(4-carboxychalcone) results in the activation of apoptotic cascades

    Investigating the Antibacterial Properties of Capsaicin in Synergy with Antibiotics Against A. baumannii

    As the ever-increasing issue of antibiotic resistance looms, naturally derived compounds have been increasingly investigated as possible synergists with antibiotics. One of these compounds, capsaicin, is a potent vanilloid that is the dominant cause of Capsicum peppers’ spiciness. Capsaicin’s intrinsic ability to inhibit a wide array of bacterial growth has been well documented. The focal organism of this study, Acinetobacter baumannii, has become an increasingly common hospital acquired infection due to its persistence on fomites. Capsaicin, however, is able to inhibit this growth at higher concentrations as well as reduce the necessary minimum inhibitory concentration while decreasing biofilm formation (p \u3c 0.0001). Since capsaicin is a porin and efflux pump inhibitor, the postulated operative mechanism is antibiotics may enter the outer membrane through porins but cannot escape via OmpA, so biofilm formation is inhibited, and structural integrity of the cell is hindered

    The Effect of Agrivoltaics on Irrigation Water Consumption in Central California

    An agricultural system where solar energy generation and agricultural systems are used together for mutual benefit, agrivoltaics reduces loss of water due to evaporation, particularly in drylands. Central California has faced extreme droughts, and water has become a scarce resource. However, the wide-scale use of agrivoltaics has been limited due to lack of knowledge about agrivoltaics and also the lack of funding for start-up agrivoltaics projects. Therefore, this research investigated the potential for agrivoltaics in Central California to reduce irrigation water consumption using a review of multiple crop studies using agrivoltaics to determine an optimal crop for agrivoltaics and a high revenue crop in California. A Suitability Model was created using Geospatial Information Systems software by comparing climate conditions and crop location to determine areas suitable for agrivoltaics. This study looked at policies on agrivoltaics and provided possible inclusions to future bills, in order to better incentivize agrivoltaics installation. Agrivoltaics could be a potential solution to water scarcity in California by reducing irrigation water usage, ultimately providing resiliency for tomato crop farms during drought conditions and decreased water supply

    Brilliance UnBothered: A Phenomenological Exploration of the Influence of the Impostor Syndrome on Black Graduate Women Enrolled in Master’s Level Programs at Predominantly White Institutions

    Framed within Hill-Collins\u27 (2009) Black feminist thought, this study delves into the emergence of the impostor syndrome construct among Black graduate-level women in higher education. Despite the growing literature on impostor syndrome and its consequences across various demographics and sectors, inadequate scholarly attention has been dedicated to comprehending the specific challenges faced by Black women in education. Nine participants enrolled in Master\u27s programs at predominantly White institutions were engaged in this exploration. Consistent with most of the existing literature, findings accentuated the pivotal role of educational attainment for Black women, who consistently outpace other groups. Interviews further unveiled a relentless pursuit of academic success, often at the expense of physical and mental well-being, amidst oppressive environments. Participants articulated experiences of impostor feelings alongside manifestations of negative self-concept, anxiety, self-doubt, and overcompensation—traits characteristic of impostor syndrome. One particular discovery, however, was that the women in this study were not interested in hiding behind their impostor behaviors, as asserted in the seminal study of Clance & Imes (1978). The Black graduate women in this study want to call attention to their impostor tendencies, strengthening their personal belief system in the process. This study amplifies the voices of Black women navigating the higher education space and sheds light on the convergence of impostor syndrome, race, and gender within this demographic.
