Burnside’s Theorem on algebras of matrices

    Get PDF
1 online resource (iii, 27 pages)Includes abstract.Includes bibliographical references (page 27).Burnside’s Theorem is a result initially posited by William Burnside in 1905 that considered subspaces of algebras of linear transformations over a finite-dimensional vector space. We provide a statement and proof of Burnside’s Theorem in its modern form. By considering algebras of matrices, we additionally provide an alternative proof using elementary results from linear algebra. Finally, we explore results that generalize Burnside’s Theorem in an infinite-dimensional setting using results from functional analysis

    A legal grey area

    Get PDF
1 online resource (63 pages)Includes abstract and appendix.Includes bibliographical references (pages 47-53).Workplace sexual harassment is a form sexual violence and sex discrimination that is prohibited in Canada under human rights law. Sexual harassment is a complex issue that exists in a grey area that has led to gaps in legal protections. The Criminal Code of Canada does not classify sexual harassment as a crime, even though there are many documented harms associated with this form of sexual violence. Employment protection legislation varies by province with some not covering sexual harassment to the extent that it should. Within this issue, one unique workplace where sexual harassment occurs is that of licensed venues. These establishments are those that have a license to serve alcohol and consist of a more sexualized environment than traditional workplaces, creating more opportunities for sexual harassment. There is little research on the policies these venues implement to deal with sexual harassment. An exploratory analysis of Nova Scotian legislation and five sexual harassment policies from licensed venues in Halifax, Nova Scotia (NS) uncovered that sexual harassment policies are sufficient, but the scope of provincial legislation is limited in protecting female employees from sexual harassment in the workplace. NS court cases dealing with sexual harassment in licensed venues were also analyzed to understand the nuances within sexual harassment as an issue including those within policies, the courts systems, and in licensed venues. Future research would focus on ways to fill these gaps and ensure that sexual harassment as a form of sex discrimination gets the protection it deserves

Talking for change : examining helpline conversations from a child sexual abuse perpetration prevention program

    Get PDF
1 online resource (vi, 98 pages) : chartsIncludes abstract.Includes bibliographical references (pages 83-98).This study examines the child sexual abuse perpetration prevention program Talking for Change, which offers an anonymous digital helpline for users to connect with clinicians and receive support. Chats (n = 189) between clinicians and those concerned about their sexual interest in children or risk of offending were coded using content analysis to explore how users engage with the digital helpline and what resources clinicians provide. Users were concerned about their thoughts, feelings, or arousal in most chats (67.7%), followed by concern about child sexual exploitation material (CSEM) use (39.2%), and risk of contact offending (15.9%). Users contacted the helpline for support, resources, and information about their interests. Mental health concerns and negative emotional states (e.g., shame) were present. Help-seekers were dedicated to living an offence-free lifestyle, although CSEM use was a concern. Clinicians provided resources, managed high-risk situations, and explained ethical and legal obligations. Overall, users expressed satisfaction with the helpline

Queering identity : an examination of multiple-pronoun use and gender expression

1 online resource (iii, 80 pages) : colour charts, colour graphsIncludes abstract and appendices.Includes bibliographical references (pages 69-71).Multiple-pronoun use, or using more than one set of personal pronouns in conjunction (e.g. she/they, he/they) is becoming a more and more common practice, yet it has not previously been analyzed or explained in an academic context. Through an online anonymous survey and semi-structured interviews, this research answers how and why multiple pronouns are used, and how they are perceived and understood by both multiple-pronoun users and single-pronoun users in an English-speaking, Eastern Canadian context. Findings show that multiple pronouns act as an index of queerness, communicate fluidity of identity, and challenge traditional gender norms. Attitudes towards multiple pronouns varied from attachment to apathy, and from acceptance to disapproval. This thesis argues that at the junction of language, gender, and identity, multiple pronouns are acting as a queering force that questions, challenges, and reimagines normative systems of gender attribution, pronoun use, and identity building

Exploration of a nitrogen tethered phosphonium-fluorenide ligand

1 online resource (x, 51 pages) : illustrations (some colour), graphs (some colour)Includes abstract and appendix.Includes bibliographical references (pages 34-37).An improved synthesis of the free ligand (3) has been developed, using potassium hexamethyldisilazide as a base instead of KH which was used previously. This adjustment lowered reaction times by 19 hours, simplified the workup, and improved yields by 20%. Reactions with Ge, Sn, Pb, Al, In, Ni, Pd, and Zn have been attempted to varying degrees of success but none of these reactions were able to selectively and completely react to form a neutral complex. A neutral bismuth complex was able to be synthesized selectively with near-quantitative yields. This complex has been characterized by 1H and 31P NMR as well as elemental analysis. Two cocrystalized antimony anions were observed by x-ray diffractometry and characterized further by elemental analysis as the co-crystallization made structure optimization impossible. One of these anions, Sb(III)Br4(OH2)2 has never been reported in the literature.</p

An analysis of the influences on eastern hemlock succession in the aftermath of hemlock woolly adelgid infestation in Nova Scotia, Canada

1 online resource (vii, 60 pages) : colour maps, charts (some colour), graphs (some colour)Includes abstract.Includes bibliographical references (pages 55-60).This study investigates the impact of Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA) infestation on eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) forest succession in Nova Scotia, Canada, with a focus on stand dynamics, tree health, and early successional trends. By comparing heavily defoliated stands in the Southern region with less affected or unaffected stands in Central Nova Scotia, significant regional differences in structure and composition were observed—largely attributable to climatic and ecological variation between ecoregions. HWA presence was strongly associated with increased snag density and downed woody debris (DWD) volume, indicators of widespread hemlock mortality. However, eastern hemlock remains a dominant species across all plots, suggesting resilience in the short term. Results of this research highlight the urgent need for targeted conservation strategies, long-term monitoring, and forest management practices

Determination of the origin and evolution of fluids in bitumen-carbonate-quartz veins in the Albert Formation, New Brunswick

    Get PDF
1 online resource (48 pages) : colour illustrations, colour maps, charts, graphsIncludes abstract.Includes bibliographical references (pages 45-48).The Albert Formation of southern New Brunswick is a set of oil-rich sedimentary siliciclastic rocks that represent an anoxic lacustrine depositional environment. It has been exploited for fossil fuels since 1849 with the mining of albertite. Within the formation are veins composed of bitumen, carbonate minerals, and quartz. Within these veins, and of primary focus to this research project, are large (≤2mm) petroleum fluid inclusions hosted within doubly-terminated quartz crystals suspended in the bitumen. These fluid inclusions are used to help determine the temporal and physicochemical evolution of petroleum that has passed through this formation. A series of analytical methods were used to determine the compositional characteristics, and pressuretemperature conditions of fluid migration and fluid inclusion entrapment. Raman spectroscopy was used to determine the maximum temperature to which the bituminous fluids were subjected. Microthermometry was used to determine the minimum temperatures of entrapment of these fluid inclusions, and GC-FID/TCD was used to determine a basic understanding of the composition of the petroleum (C1-C6 species). At least two distinct petroleum fluids were identified. Knowledge of composition and pressure-temperature conditions of petroleum entrapment helps strengthen the understanding of this important geological setting

Nestling sex allocation in European Starlings : the role of parental condition and nest greenery

    Get PDF
1 online resource (33 pages) : illustrations (some colour), charts (some colour), graphs (some colour)Includes abstract and appendix.Includes bibliographical references (pages 27-31).Nestling sex allocation is influenced by parental condition and mate attractiveness in many bird species, such that parents in better condition and those who are more attractive have male-biased brood sex ratios. In facultatively polygynous species, high quality sons confer greater reproductive success as they can attract several mates. Therefore, females in good condition would do best producing more sons, while females in poor condition would produce more daughters. Similarly, behaviours performed by courting males, such as adding greenery to the nest may also affect brood sex ratio with more greenery resulting in a male-biased brood sex ratio. Male European Starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) are a facultatively polygynous species that adds greenery to their nest, likely to signal their attractiveness. This study explored how parental body condition and male greenery addition influenced brood sex ratios across the 2023 and 2024 breeding seasons in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. I predicted that parents in good condition or males who add greenery over more days would have male-biased brood sex ratios but found no significant relationship between their condition and brood sex ratios. However, a significant interaction effect occurred; male condition influenced nestling sex ratios only when females were in poor condition, creating a male bias when males were in good condition. These findings suggest female condition modifies the effect of male condition on sex allocation. Greenery addition frequency was not associated with brood sex ratio. These findings highlight the role of parental condition interactions in offspring sex allocation, while the significance of greenery addition remains unclear. Future research should examine total mass of greenery in a nest, the amount of greenery added daily, as well as female responses to greenery additions to better understand the function of nest ornamentation in brood sex allocation

Love and dislike of work : community pharmacists' perception of their job and what can be improved

    No full text
Passion for one’s profession often motivates career choice, yet daily realities may not always align with expectations. Within the pharmacy field, expanding responsibilities, evolving roles, and rising demands make it critical to understand how practitioners perceive their work. This thesis examines community pharmacists’ perspectives through a qualitative analysis of open-ended survey responses, highlighting both the valued aspects (loves) of the profession and areas of struggle (dislikes). Findings reveal a complex professional landscape shaped by contrasting sentiments. Themes of love emphasized identity, purpose, connection, and autonomy, reflecting pharmacists’ desire to contribute meaningfully, practice with competence, and belong to a supportive community. In contrast, themes of dislike highlighted organizational pressures, a lack of recognition, and policy misalignment, which compromise service delivery, patient safety, and quality of life. To sustain the workforce, future initiatives must prioritize emotional resilience, structural reforms, and inclusive policies that acknowledge and strengthen the vital contributions of pharmacists
