    Voluntary intent to be absent measure

    134 leaves ; 29 cmIncludes abstract and appendices.Includes bibliographical references (pages 95-110).Although absenteeism has received a considerable amount of research attention it has, thus far, mainly been examined in a post hoc fashion. To further our understanding regarding employees’ absenteeism I developed a voluntary intent to be absent (VIA) measure. Using a shortitudinal study design I examined VIA measure’s factor structure, psychometric properties, its nomological network – by analyzing its relationship with constructs, such as perceived absence norms, job satisfaction, workplace incivility, and psychological distress, and its incremental value over-and-above Martocchio’s (1992) absence intentions scale and the aforementioned work attitudes. Factor analyses revealed that a 7-item VIA scale accounted for a similar amount of variance in measuring this construct as compared to lengthier versions. Additionally, findings showed that the 7-item VIA scale is a reliable and valid measure that adds value in predicting future voluntary absences over and above the existing absence intentions scale and work attitudes

    Second harmonic generation microscopy of inner ear otoconia

    1 online resource (54 pages) : illustrations (some colour)Includes abstract.Includes bibliographical references (pages 51-54).Otoconia are microscopic biocrystals located within the vestibular system of the inner ear, that allow vertebrates to detect gravity and linear acceleration. When otoconia become degraded due to factors including aging, disease, and consumption of ototoxic medications, vestibular pathologies arise, and the body’s ability to maintain balance is significantly impaired. Vestibular pathologies such as benign-paroxysmal positional vertigo are a significant health concern across Canada. These pathologies lead to falls which cause debilitating conditions such as bone fractures, neurological damage, and negative social impacts. To develop methods to prevent degeneration of otoconia, and to induce and promote repair and regeneration, it is important to study their crystalline ultrastructure. In this study, we investigate the origin of second harmonic generation (SHG) signal in otoconia and their internal structural properties using SHG microscopy. SHG microscopy allows for optical sectioning of otoconia providing a 3D image of them, unlike previously used imaging techniques. To determine the origin of SHG signal of otoconia, calcite, the principal component of otoconia (>90 wt. -%) was imaged using SHG microscopy. Calcite gave ~41× less SHG signal compared to otoconia. Therefore, it was determined that calcite is unlikely the origin of SHG signal in otoconia. This finding indicates that proteins in otoconia are likely causing the SHG signal in otoconia as they make up the remaining portion of otoconia (<5 wt. -%). SHG images of otoconia revealed that they are polarization-dependent. This indicates that the proteins emitting SHG in otoconia are radially arranged, extending from a central region. Otoconia were also imaged after exposure to 0.5M ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), which degrades calcium carbonate. SHG signal increased over time, further supporting that proteins are causing the SHG signal in otoconia. It was concluded that SHG microscopy is a promising technique for investigating the internal structural properties of otoconia

    1 online resource (270 pages) : colour illustrations, colour mapsIncludes abstract and appendices.Includes bibliographical references (pages 223-264).Silicate melt inclusions (SMI) from 2697 – 2699 Ma Bousquet rhyolites (Doyon-Bousquet-LaRonde district, Québec) were characterized to elucidate magmatic contributions to VMS deposit tenor in the region. The key results are as follows: (i) Early rhyolite is of dominantly ocean ridge (tholeiitic) to transitional affinity, whereas later rhyolite has dominantly volcanic arc (calc-alkaline) affinity; (ii) SMI record a wide compositional range compared to host (bulk) rocks, reflecting extensive plagioclase fractionation at depth and inconsistent with TTG classifications previously proposed for the melts; (iii) Ore/accessory metal concentrations in SMI (e.g., Auavg = 33 to 120 ppb) are much higher than crustal abundances, and reflect pre-eruptive Bousquet Formation magma metal tenor; and (iv) melts were saturated in liquid CO2 but undersaturated in H2O at depth. The study is one of only a few studies of SMI from Archean rocks and the first to present trace element/ore metal data for SMI of this age

    Operational sex ratio affects female Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes) behaviours

The OSR can be used to predict variation in mating behaviours across different social contexts and is used to predict how selection and conflict will vary within species. There exist two characteristics that influence the way species behave in regard to reproduction: sexual conflict and sexual selection. Within the literature about sexual behaviour, most focus on males rather than females. The goal of this research is to determine how OSR influences the behaviour of female Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes). During the experiment, behavioural observations of individual female medaka were recorded across four OSRs (male: female): of 0.5, 1, 2, and 5. Rates of behaviour associated with conflict and competition were recorded for two minutes per female over three discrete observation periods. Conflict behaviours, female refusal and male-female aggression increased with increasing OSR, while female-male aggression decreased. Competition behaviours, females receiving aggression and females initiating aggression, decreased with increasing OSR. Body size was another factor analyzed to see the influence on both conflict and competition. Two of the conflict behaviours, female refusal and male-female aggression were influenced by the body size of the female, but none of the competition behaviours were affected by body size. Determining which behaviours are influenced by OSR and body size can be used to predict the outcomes of sexual conflict and sexual selection in different mating systems
