    Improving young workers’ safety voice : a three-part study exploring safety voice interventions

    vii, 133 leaves ; 29 cmIncludes abstract and appendices.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 87-105).Three studies (and a manipulation check) were conducted using mixed methods to examine an intervention to improve young workers’ confidence and willingness to voice safety concerns at work. Study One involved semi-structured interviews with young people (N = 21) who personally experienced or witnessed an incident or near miss at work. These interviews (in addition to the literature) then guided the development of a four-step safety voice intervention (CARD). This intervention was tested in Study 2 and compared with a popular training tool currently used to teach young people their workplace Rights in an on-line questionnaire format (N=236). Only a univariate main effect was noted between the CARD safety voice intervention and young worker’s confidence in voicing safety concerns (multivariate effects were not significant). In Study 3, CARD was compared with Safety Specific Transformational Leadership and a Job Requirement to Voice, after a manipulation check (N=137) to ensure the intervention was working as intended. Several significant three-way interactions were found in this final study (N=360). CARD was found to have a significant effect on young workers’ confidence to voice safety concerns (i.e., lowered perceived risk to Job Security, and improved Probability of Success and perceptions of Safety Climate) compared to the control group, but only when Safety Specific Transformational Leadership and the Job Requirement to Voice were absent. Findings from this study may have organizational and public policy implications

    Does the place of education matter in reducing the difference in earnings between immigrants and native-born in Canada?

The Mincerian equation has been utilized to show the effect of education on earnings. The result shows that the returns to education for immigrants is less than the Canadian born by 1.14% for males and 0.46% for females. A wage difference between immigrants and native-born was found to be 42% for males and 43% for females. Our findings suggest that a lack of foreign credentials recognition is the cause for the difference in earnings

In the early-mid 20th century, the Nova Scotian government took interest in these things, and elevated their importance to help create a unified heritage strategy. I examined Citadel Hill and Fisherman’s Cove as case studies that had elements of Scottishness and idyllic maritime folk themes, respectively. In this thesis, I lay out histories of the two sites and of Nova Scotia’s historical heritage development, explaining why Scottishness and idyllic maritime folk themes are still prominent in the province’s tourist landscape today

    Fusarium head blight and deoxynivalenol from barley in the Maritime Provinces

    1 online resource (55 pages) : illustrations (some colour), mapIncludes abstract.Includes bibliographical references (pages 45-54).Fusarium Head Blight (FHB) is one of the most devastating agriculture diseases that affects barley worldwide by reducing crop yields and grain quality. The main causal organism of concern in Eastern Canada is the fungal pathogen, Fusarium graminearum. This pathogen inhibits protein synthesis in the seeds, resulting in low yields, and can produce mycotoxins to contaminate the grains. Deoxynivalenol (DON) is the most important mycotoxins as it is toxic to animals and humans. It is important to perform barley disease surveys in the Maritimes as they have ceased in the early 2000s, resulting in a lack of FHB information in these provinces. To further understand the presence of FHB causing species and DON in the Maritime provinces, barley seeds were collected by partners at the Atlantic Grains Council. Seed samples were separated per field to isolate Fusarium species, and a second subsample ground for quantitative-PCR (qPCR) and DON analysis. A total of 336 isolates were collected, the majority being F. graminearum, other species identified were F. poae, F. avenaceum, and F. sporotrichioides. DON concentrations ranged from 0 to 15.6 ppm in each field. Nova Scotia presented the highest disease level based on qPCR of F. graminearum DNA, isolate numbers and DON levels, with less disease presence in New Brunswick and PEI. F. graminearum DNA correlated significantly with DON concentration (R2=0.92). A virulence assay using F. graminearum isolates from each province was performed to observe differences between provincial isolates and to assess visual rating methods. qPCR data did reveal a weak positive correlation with visual severity ratings (R2=0.48). This qPCR assay revealed a rapid and reliable method to evaluate and quantify FHB in barley to be used in future surveys. Correlation results can be used to increase precision in other agronomic studies that aim to reduce FHB severity

    Heritability of sexual traits in the common Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes)

By showing that certain sexual traits are inherited, I demonstrated that these traits can vary, at least in part, because of adaptation, rather than entirely because of plasticity across abiotic and social environments. Japanese medaka fish (Oryzias latipes) have observable and quantifiable morphological traits, making them a good model for monitoring the influence of operational sex ratio, OSR, the ratio of sexually available males to females, on population variability. The fish were isolated in mating pairs in standardized environmental conditions to determine whether variation in traits was because of the OSR or genetic factors. Anal fin area (mm2), standard body length (mm), and testis weight (mg) were measured for the parental fish and their offspring, which were collected as eggs and raised until sexual maturity. Linear regressions were used to indicate heritability between the parental and offspring traits. Average standard body length, male anal fin area, and testis weight had the highest narrow sense heritability factors (h2=0.5430, h2=0.3295, and h2=0.6286, respectively). The influence of OSR was determined for the parental traits using general linear models, as they had been bred in four independent OSRs (0.5, 1, 2, 5) for three generations previous to this experiment. All traits had a weak influence of OSR except for male and female anal fin area and testis weight, which was stronger only when body length was also factored in. By showing that these traits are inherited, I provide evidence that additive genetic variation is playing a role in the variation between and among populations of medaka

Computational Science involves the development and solution of mathematical models, i.e., systems of equations, that represent approximations to real world phenomenon in a wide variety of scientific areas. These mathematical models typically do not have closed form solutions and thus the models are solved using computational software to obtain approximate solutions. Since these solutions are approximate, the question that must be addressed is “How Good is the Computed Solution?”. This question is answered for a given numerical solution through the computation of a good quality error estimate. This thesis will discuss current work on answering this question in the area of computational methods for differential equations that depend on time and/or one or more spatial dimensions. We will describe the use of collocation, a general numerical method that can be used to obtain approximate solutions for a wide range of problem classes, as well as our recent work in the development of efficiently computable error estimates for collocation solutions based on special types of interpolants. We provide results from numerical experiments to demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach

It does so by examining the early career of Dr. Cluny Macpherson, a physician from St. John’s whose career spanned sixty years. The contexts in which Macpherson practiced reveal both change and continuity in the development of health care delivery systems as they evolved to meet the needs of the population: advances in medical science changed understandings of infectious disease and available treatments; trends in religious and philanthropic thought brought health care and social reform to northern regions; and the First World War brought reform to the organizational structure of military medicine, and pushed scientific and medical research in new and specialized directions

    Who is my neighbour : the church through the eyes of former inmates

    1 online resource (50 pages)Includes abstract and appendices.Includes bibliographical references (pages 26-28)."Graduate Project"This Qualitative Research study examines the data collected from former inmates of provincial and federal jails and prisons. Using a phenomenological research method, having completed one on one direct interviews with five participants, this study focuses on how former inmates have experienced the church and what the church can do most accurately to engage with individuals upon release from custody and return to community. This study identifies five overall themes which ultimately relate to accurate engagement by the church with former inmates: hopelessness, aloneness, time, connection and hope. Based, on the findings, literature review on the subject and theological consideration, the implications for the church as well as general conclusions are drawn. Most notably, it is argued that accurate support from the church relates to ongoing contact, connection, and relationship, all requiring a very limited draw on time or human resources. This is a hopeful outcome indeed
