    1 online resource (193 pages)Includes abstract.Includes bibliographical references (pages 174-193).Using British Airways (BA) PLC as the case study, I undertake a critical discourse analysis of the lack of diversity in top management teams. Organization leadership is important for several reasons including its role in organization performance and success. As operating environments become progressively complex, understanding who the leaders are, and how that leadership composition comes about, is critical. Despite globalization and increased access to diverse ways of thinking, ultimate authority resides in the top management teams whose configuration remains homogenous. I explore how the discourse of leadership precludes greater diversity in the composition of the highest levels of management. Results highlight three key factors that affect the discourse of leadership. They are history, the organization intersectionality experience, and influence from the external operating environment

    Spectroscopic and structural properties of galaxies in a cluster environment 5.3 billion years ago

We obtain follow up spectroscopic observations of the cluster, originally identified in the HectoMAP survey, and confirm an additional 25 galaxies as cluster members (increasing cluster membership by 78%). We calculate Dη4000, a proxy for galaxy stellar population age, for all cluster members. We perform a statistical correction using photometric cluster member candidates to account for missing spectroscopic members. We analyze the Dη4000 - clustercentric distance relation of the cluster and find that galaxies at all clustercentric distances have similarly aged stellar populations, implying a mixture of star forming and quiescent galaxies at all cluster radii. Using available measurements, we examine the size-stellar mass relation to find that non-star-forming cluster members and member candidates with log10(M∗/M⊙) > 10.5 are, on average, larger in the cluster environment than in the field

It grapples with my own relationship with words and their seemingly static, readable, and conclusionary nature, against the elusive, multiple nature of art and making. It considers the place and use of both these practices in academia and everyday life. To do this, the thesis takes the shape of and examines research-creation practice within a Canadian context, using the process-centric craft of hand knitting a sweater to explore how feminist materialism and the anarchive might offer me ways to resist or refuse the value and static notion of capture often granted to words. Beginning in June 2022, early in Halifax’s short summer season, this thesis follows my process hand knitting a sweater as I went about my daily life, and records, through autotheoretical and an archival practice, some of the (un)usual traces this process created. It asks the question: how can hand knitting a sweater be both an an archive and a knowledge making practice?

These records reveal a decline in arrests for prostitution and brothel-keeping due to changing legal terminology, reflecting societal shifts in the Edwardian Era. Mapping the distribution of sex workers' residences shows concentration in working-class neighborhoods, indicating economic necessity. However, sex workers were active agents in their financial security, choosing their profession over limited alternatives like the poorhouse or factory work. Understanding sex workers beyond their trade, as active members of their communities, is vital. This research sheds light on a crucial period in St. John’s history and contributes to a comprehensive understanding of the lives and experiences of historical sex workers

While initial formulations betrayed some tension between natural rights and consequentialist views, jurisprudence would eventually settle on a form of compromise that attempted to balance the rights of authors with the overall benefit to society. Copyright protections largely mirrored the legal protections afforded to tangible property and the law principally treats intellectual objects as another form of ownership. I propose that this model is predicated on a fundamental misunderstanding of the creative process and what occurs when an expression is created and disseminated to the public. The creative expression as property view fails to account for how the artist imbues an aspect of themselves into their expression and how the audience internalises those aspects. Instead, we ought to formulate a new legal paradigm that acknowledges creative expression as a manifestation of identity and affords the appropriate legal protections

However, the expanding scope of edge creation highlights the limitations of field studies. Models offer an accessible means to simulate edge effects in a time and cost effective manner. this thesis explores the potential of ordinary differential equation (ODE) models to describe simulated vegetation responses of shade-intolerant trees following the establishment of a clear-cut edge in a boreal ecosystem. Through time-dependent parameters, I developed a suite of nested models capturing observable population trends in seedlings, saplings, and adult shade-intolerant trees. Sensitivity analyses were conducted to asses model robustness and predictive capability. This research will contribute to future implementations of edge vegetation response models, aiming to enhance our understanding of the long-term effects of edge creation

    Investigation into the third order nonlinear optical properties of potential harmonophores

It is an advantageous technique for biological imaging, as unlike fluorescence microscopy, it does not risk damaging the sample through photobleaching. In this, imaging is performed by contrasting the difference in the THG signal generated by the sample. This difference can be enhanced for the sample through the use of dyes that act as strong harmonophores, which are compounds that generate strong THG signal. The ability to generate strong THG signal can be evaluated through determining the second hyperpolarizability (γ) value for the compound. In this thesis, an investigation into the nonlinear optical properties of starting materials and a set of pyrrole compounds for a series of ruthenium-pyrrole complexes was performed using THG microscopy. The second hyperpolarizability (γ) values for each compound were determined using the THG ratio technique. This work acts as a base to evaluate how to optimize the rutheniumpyrrole complexes to improve their potential for use as dyes for THG microscopy

    Understanding the Villa di Tito and the Velino valley within central Italy by creating spatial connections

This research applies ArcGIS Pro and is divided into two forms of analysis. The first compares the Villa di Tito to sample villas located within the Sabine region, using environmental (including slope, elevation, aspect, geology, rivers, lakes, and solar radiation) and cultural (including Roman roads, and archaeological sites) datasets. The aim is to see whether a pattern can be found for villas based on the placement and potential for agropastoral production. In addition, ancient agronomists’ farming manuals such as Cato, Columella, Varro and Pliny were incorporated to understand a villa’s placement in the landscape. The second form of analysis examined the connectivity of the Villa di Tito to other archaeological sites within the Sabine Region by applying optimal path analysis. Combined, these two analyses aim to understand the placement of the Villa di Tito in the Velino Valley and its connection to the broader landscape. The Villa di Tito was found to be a unique placement based on the comparison villas and was well connected with the broader Sabine region

    Assessing arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and sediment organic carbon density in Nova Scotia salt marshes

    1 online resource (ix, 60 pages) : colour illustrations, colour maps, charts (some colour), graphs (some colour)Includes abstract and appendices.Includes bibliographical references (pages 47-55).This research examines the carbon accumulation potential of salt marshes in the Bay of Fundy by analyzing sediment organic carbon (OC) and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) within the root zone of Sporobolus (Spartina) sp. at 11 salt marsh sites. Sediment was analyzed for organic matter (OM) by loss on ignition (LOI) and carbon was quantified using elemental analysis. AMF colonization rates were highly variable among sites and plant species, with high rates at restored marshes and in Sporobolus michauxianus roots (94%). Previously used LOI to OC conversion equation overestimated sediment OC densities. Regression analyses determined a quadratic equation that best described the relationship between OC and OM for most sites. Salt marshes are environmentally variable indicating that the relationship between OC and OM could differ geographically and should be measured independently. This study is the first to assess salt marsh AMF root colonization and sediment OC densities at multiple sites
