changing of moods.
changing of habits.
changing of seasons.
leaving one place and knowing it won’t be the same when you return.
the elation of growing closer and the stinging emptiness of drawing back.
hoping, wondering, longing.
knowing you can’t return to what was.
knowing you can’t forecast what is yet to come.
change is daunting.
change is thrilling.
change is inevitable.
and change is not the only thing that’s constant.
because while change pushes and shoves and attempts to grab the reigns,
there is someone else on the throne.
sovereign over every change.
a consistent beacon of hope.
a constant refuge in times of trouble.
an unshakable foundation that never moves.
the answer no matter how many variables appear.
Prince of Peace.
King of Kings.
Lion of Judah.
no matter the season,
Jesus remains.
in control.
on the throne.
providing guidance.
victorious.
and never changing.

    He found that sleep had avoided him for quite some time. He rolled
over from his left side to his right. The clock on his bedside table informed
him that he was well into the second hour of the night. 
    Garrett Kelton had been awake since his family sent him to bed “so
Santa could come.” His parents and siblings all knew it was not real, and
yet, they joked as if they were all still such children. 
Perhaps it was melodramatic of him to think in such a way. He was still a
child, at seventeen years old. But something felt wrong to him.  
   He threw his blankets off and hung his legs off the edge of his bed,
slipping on his earlier-discarded socks and sweatshirt. He then stood and
padded over to the door, creaking it open with a silent plea to remain
quiet. 
    Down the stairs he went, forever grateful that his mother and father had
made the decision to carpet them. At the bottom, he immediately turned
and entered the living room. 
   There, still glowing late into the night, was the Christmas tree. The lights
twinkled, the candy canes hung, and the star blazed at the very top.
 He felt nothing as he stared at it. 
    No excitement. No joy. No restlessness in waiting for the sun to rise. 
    He pulled up his hood and settled his hands in his pockets. With a sigh,
he leaned his head to the side slightly. 
    Why? he thought to himself. Why is it all so wrong? 
    Things were not the same as they used to be. He knew that much. In the
last two years, Christmas had felt more like a chore than a holiday. 
Always expected to have a smile on my face, he thought bitterly. Always
expected to think Christmas is so happy and joyous all the time. Well what if
it isn’t, to me, huh? Then what?
    He was angry, then. Why did no one else feel the way he did? Why was
he so alone, when it felt like that was the worst possible thing?
 There was a shuffle on the stairs. He turned. 
   “What are you doing up?” asked Jenna, his older sister. The one who
had left for college and finally came home for Christmas break. 
    “I don’t know,” admitted Garrett with a shrug, after a moment.

   “I couldn’t sleep. I came down to look at the Christmas tree.” 
   She stepped forward until she stood even with him. “Couldn’t sleep?”
she repeated, slipping her arm through his. 
  He shrugged again. “Just tossing and turning, mostly. Mind won’t
settle,” he said, rubbing a hand down his face. 
  “Anything you wanna tell your big sister about?” asked Jenna, squeezing
his arm lightly.
   “I don’t know. I don’t want to sound like I’m spoiled or petulant,” he
whispered. He gave a huff of a laugh. “Not like Willie would call me.” 
She laughed as well and shook her head, before sobering. “You won’t
sound petulant, not to me,” she said. 
    Garrett was quiet for a long while. “Christmas isn’t the same as it used
to be. Nothing is, really. I don’t know why,” he whispered. 
   Jenna smiled sadly. “You’re growing up, bud,” she said, shifting and
putting her arm around his shoulder. “You’re not so little anymore.
Christmas won’t feel so magical.” 
    “What do you mean?” he asked, an edge to his voice. 
   “Christmas won’t be like it was when we were little kids,” said Jenna.      
.   “That magical feeling can’t be captured again.”
  “So what, we’re just supposed to be miserable now?” asked Garrett
incredulously. 
     Jenna fixed him with an exasperated look and an arched eyebrow. “Do
Willie and I look miserable to you?” she asked. 
    Garrett shook his head. “No, but you just said it won’t be as happy as it
used to be,” he said. 
   It was Jenna’s turn to shake her head. “That’s not what I said,” she
corrected. “I said it would never be as magical again.” 
    “What’s the difference?” asked Garrett. 
  “Willie taught me, when I was your age,” said Jenna, almost with a
wistfulness. “Even if it doesn’t have that wonder it used to, it’s still
happy.”
     “How?” asked Garrett.

    “It’s from your family,” said Jenna. “All of us being gathered together,
even if it’s for a short time, makes it good again.”
    “Willie taught you that?” said Garrett, giving her a doubtful look. 
Jenna nodded. “He meant it, too,” she said. “And I’m betting that, by
next Christmas, he’ll be teaching us something else, as well.” 
    “And what’s that?” asked Garrett, giving her his own arched eyebrow. 
  “That just because you don’t get to have the magical feeling anymore
doesn’t mean your kids won’t have it,” said Jenna. 
  Garrett’s doubt turned into surprise. “You really think they’re that
close?” he asked. 
   She smiled. “He told me as much himself,” she said. She sobered
quickly. “I’m glad he’s able to teach me that, though. Samantha is really
lucky.”
   “And what about you?” asked Garrett. “Are you ever gonna teach me
that lesson yourself?”
    Jenna gave him a sideways look. “Maybe. I may or may not have an eye
on someone,” she admitted quietly. “But that’s a lesson you’ll get by next
Christmas.”
   Garrett nodded sagely and decided it was best to drop the subject. “I
guess it doesn’t have to be magical to be good,” he said. 
   “No. Believe me, growing up isn’t so bad. Not nearly as bad as some
make it out to be,” she replied. 
    He was quiet. “Let’s go to bed,” he said. “Spending time with the family
sounds nice.”
    “Oh, do I not count as family now?” she asked, jokingly offended. “I
see how it is. I leave for one semester and get kicked right off the family
tree.”
    “Hardy har har. You know what I mean,” said Garrett, rolling his eyes.
But he smiled, then. “Besides, if I kick you off our family tree, you can just
go climb another, miss, ‘I have my eye on someone.’”
    Jenna glared at him and poked him in the side viciously. “I take it back,
only some family makes Christmas good again, and you ain’t on that list,
bucko.”

Garrett rolled his eyes. “Oh, the horror. Come on, you dictator, I’m
tired,” he said, managing to cut off a yawn. 
   She smiled and, linking arms with him again, slowly padded up the
stairs. When she reached his door, just across the hall from hers, she
separated. 
    “Merry Christmas, Garrett,” she whispered. 
    He smiled and reached out to hug her. “Merry Christmas, Jenna.”
  Finally settling into bed, he found that he was more tired than he
originally thought. Must have been the existential crisis, he thought
sarcastically, before closing his eyes and settling down. 
    Maybe the reason Christmas didn’t feel so special anymore was because
he wasn’t as much of a child. But that was okay. 
    It wasn’t the gifts that mattered, or the lights on the tree, or the special
movies they watched every year. It was the fact that he could spend a
whole day with no one but those that were most important to him and
cherish the fact that they loved him as much as he loved them. 
     That was truly what was special.

     In the morning, as he sat sandwiched between his siblings on the couch,
he could almost physically feel what his sister had been talking about. He
thought for a moment that if he simply reached out, he could grab hold of
it and wrap it safely in his arms. 
    His mother and father came into the living room and engulfed each of
them in a hug. When they got to him, he could only think, This is what
that feeling feels like.

Keynote Address: “Deep Reading's Contributions to Humanity in a Digital Culture” 
Maryanne Wolf is a scholar, teacher and advocate for children and 
literacy around the world. She is currently the director of the Center for 
Dyslexia, Diverse Learners and Social Justice at UCLA in the School of 
Education and Information Studies. She has written more than 170 
scientific publications, including "Reader, Come Home: the Reading 
Brain in a Digital Culture" (12 Translations; HarperCollins, 2018). Wolf is 
also the creator of the RAVE-O Intervention Program for all struggling 
readers and has received multiple awards for her contributions to the 
neuroscience of reading. Most recently, she was elected a permanent 
member of the Pontifical Academy of Science.

Many students often ask if Messiah University actually recycles. The
answer is yes, but it's also more nuanced than you'd expect. First, we
need to consider what recycling is. Recycling is the process of
transferring a waste product into a reusable material. 
Second, we need to consider what can be recycled: Cardboard,
aluminum cans, glass, and 1,2,5 plastics. Not all plastics are created
equal. Even if the triangle recycling sign exists on a plastic container, if
the number sign isn't 1,2, or 5, it's simply not recyclable at PennWaste.
Additionally, if recycling contains food waste or other contaminates, it's
not recyclable. This is why it's important to be aware of what items are
recyclable and to choose to sort these items away from trash. 
While recycling remains a good practice, it's ultimately not a permanent
solution. An article from National Public Radio: How Big Oil Misled The
Public Into Believing Plastic Would Be Recycled claimed the following:
"All used plastic can be turned into new things, but picking it up, sorting
it out and melting it down is expensive. Plastic also degrades each time
it is reused, meaning it can't be reused more than once or twice". Many
boundaries exist that prevent recyclable items to actually be recycled.
Additionally, plastics have a finite number of times it may be recycled.
Because of these short-comings, I encourage consumers to mindfully
chose low packaging options, second-hand purchases, and quality over
quantity.
Long story short: Messiah University recycles through PennWaste and it's
better to recycle than not.

“Each one should use  whatever gifts he has received to serve others, faithfully
administering God’s grace in its various forms.” (1 Peter 4:10)
Each year, Messiah hosts Service Day - this year’s is on April 4th. Service Day is a beautiful
opportunity to worship the Lord and help out our neighbors. There are countless opportunities
to suit anyone’s needs and abilities, but we hope that you consider helping out the Office of
Sustainability in the garden if you do not have other responsibilities!
This year we will be weeding and planting for this year’s produce growing season! We will also
be repairing some parts of the chicken coop and the raised garden beds. I love Service Day in
the garden because we always have so much fun listening to music and being goofy with each
other. There is something so sweet about spending a day off outside caring for the environment
that God gave us. Service is such a gift and I am so grateful Messiah embeds it into our
curriculum. Make sure to sign up for serving in the garden on April 4th!

Food Recovery Network Volunteers Needed
Messiah donates leftovers from Lottie to Bethesda Men’s Homeless
Shelter
Volunteers pick one hour every week to transport trays.
Volunteers can use their own vehicle and commit to an hour of their
time regularly.
Volunteers will be trained and informed about how and where to
transport the trays.
Food Recovery Network is a non-profit organization working to
reduce food waste and benefit local communities.

Messiah University Earthkeepers is a club that strives to
promote sustainable practices. We aim to protect and
improve the environment to honor God and the creation
he has gifted us. 
This Saturday, March 2nd, Earthkeepers will be going
birding. This will be a time for us to connect with one
another, connect with nature, and see who can spot the
most bird species. 
We will be meeting outside of the Oakes Museum at 9
AM by the elephant and will be walking the nature trails,
so please dress accordingly. Snacks will be provided. All
are welcome and I hope to see you there!

 Messiah Earthkeepers is a club that promotes sustainable
practices and caring for Earth on our campus. We strive for
community within our student body by working together to care
for God’s creation. Some ways that we do this include the Lisburn
Road clean-up, garden volunteering, nature walks, film analyses,
discussions, and more. We are thankful for all those who have
attended our events and plan to participate more this year! 
 As the holiday season is quickly approaching, Earthkeepers is
focusing on sustainable practices to use during this time. We had
a meeting on November 5th, where we introduced the topic of
sustainable solutions during the holidays.

We talked about food waste at Thanksgiving,
and the importance of eating leftovers and
composting. We also introduced LED lights as
an alternative to high energy lights used during
Christmas. In addition, shopping at small and
local businesses and purchasing fewer
materialistic items can be beneficial to the
environment. 
Earthkeepers is hosting an upcoming event
called “a sustainable gift-wrapping night”! We
have been collecting old newspapers, packing
paper, and used wrapping paper to be reused
for Christmas wrapping. We encourage others
to save up old paper in preparation for our
event on December 3rd, at 6 pm. We hope you
can make it!

paper as you prepare your holiday gifts!
Every year, families across America come
together to celebrate Thanksgiving.
Unfortunately, this celebration comes at
an environmental cost, as an estimated
305 million pounds of food go to waste
from Thanksgiving dinner alone.   
The impact of this waste extends beyond
the landfill. Producing this food
generates greenhouse gas emissions
exceeding 1,100,000 metric tons of
CO2 equivalent (MTCO2e)—the same as
driving 169,000 cars for an entire year.
Additionally, the water footprint totals
104 billion gallons—enough to supply
New York City’s water needs for three
and a half months. 
One effective way to minimize food
waste is by making better use of
leftovers:     
Encourage BYO-Tupperware: Ask
guests to bring their own reusable
containers. This not only reduces food
waste but also eliminates the need
for disposable options like paper
plates and plastic wrap.
 Get Creative with Leftovers:
Transform leftover turkey into soups
or sandwiches and repurpose side
dishes into new meals to encourage
less waste.

Tackling Thanksgiving Food Waste & Black
Friday Impulse Purchases

After Thanksgiving, many shift their focus
to Black Friday. During the week of Black
Friday, 25% more waste is generated with
the majority coming from excess
packaging. Up to 80% of Black Friday
purchases are discarded after minimal use.
Overconsumption fuels unnecessary waste,
but mindful shopping can make a big
difference!
Here are some tips to shop smarter this
holiday season:
• Plan Accordingly: Make a list of what
you need before shopping and stick to it.
 • Choose Sustainable Shipping: Opt for
slower delivery if it means consolidating
items into fewer packages.
 • Reuse Packaging: Save boxes, bubble
wrap, and other materials for future use.
 • Opt for Local Pickup: When available,
select in-store pickup to cut down on
shipping waste.
 • Invest in Quality: Prioritize durable,
multi-use items over short-lived trends. Ask
yourself, “Can this be reused, repurposed,
or regifted later?” 
• Buy Locally! Find those fun little shops
that you have always wanted to go to.
• Invest in an experience instead of a
gift: Prioritize time together instead of
purchasing consumables.
At Messiah, Sustainability is defined as an “ethos of ecological
citizenship and stewardship through education, sustainability planning,
and community engagement to create an environmentally, socially, and
economically just world”.
Messiah’s commitment to sustainability continues with its recent Bronze
award from the Association for the Advancement in Sustainability Higher
Education (AASHE). Messiah University’s Office of Sustainability recently
earned this STARS (Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System)
rating in recognition of its sustainability achievements which measure
and encourage sustainability in all aspects of higher education. 
The office of Sustainability is located in the Eisenhower Campus Center
and is staffed by Helena Cicero, Director of Campus Sustainability, and
Lori Chance, Sustainability Program Coordinator. The office also comes
to life each academic year with several work-study students who focus
their attention on 5 categories that are taken from the 17 United Nations
Sustainable Development Goals (https://sdgs.un.org/goals). These five
categories include Engagement, Waste, Biodiversity, Energy, and Food.
Embedded in Messiah’s Community Covenant it reads that “…respect for
creation also shows itself in our treatment of natural resources. As
stewards, we are to be faithful in preserving the environment and in
maintaining balances within the creation order. We are to use our
intellect and creativity to preserve and enhance the creation, using its
resources prudently in light of the uncertain limits to history and life as
we know it.”

Our office helps to provide education and programming to assist the
University in carrying out this call for action to care for our creation.
We provide several programs throughout the year that allow all
students to be involved. Some of these programs include Sustain-A-
Fest, tree plantings, Campus Race to Zero Waste, Swap and Mend,
Sustainable Living Survey, Garden Management/Volunteer time, and
Move Out.  
We hope that through these programs, students will become better
equipped to be mindful of the importance of their role in creation
care. The possibilities and expectations are numerous to further
mitigate the impacts of climate change, protect biodiversity, manage
campus waste, and educate the campus community.

Academic Accessibility and library patrons.  The scanner is a 
high-speed, face-up book capture system that scans nearly 20 
book pages per minute for instant access as a PDF, JPEG, or 
readable PDF. In color or grayscale, capture multiple pages and 
quickly export them to a device of your choice.

evening with award-winning author and illustrator 
Don Tate. 
   
Don Tate will share his insight into the world of 
children’s literature, including live doodling and a 
reading from his acclaimed book, Poet: The 
Remarkable Story of George Moses Horton.   
Book sales by Midtown Scholar & book signing will 
follow the event.   
 
Free and open to the public.  This event is for all ages 
and all lovers of literature to come together and 
celebrate the power of storytelling.

through Swank Digital Campus. Swank partners with major Hollywood studios, 
documentary providers, independent filmmakers and international film companies 
to provide a diverse library of more than 25,000 films and TV shows, including  
 titles like “Dunkirk,” “Moonlight,” “To Kill a Mockingbird” and “An Inconvenient Truth.” The wide range of 
titles ensures all academic departments can find the movies needed to promote active and engaged learning in

Accessible Archives collections are now live on History Commons. With a 
new name and an improved search interface, History Commons includes 
collections of American newspapers with a focus on African-American 
newspapers, Women's rights, Pennsylvania, and the Civil War. Titles span 
the colonial period to the early twentieth century. This fantastic primary source collection is completely keyword searchable and downloadable. It’s the only place online to offer full digital access to Benjamin Franklin’s 
Pennsylvania Gazette (1728-1800)! Give it a search today!  
 
 
Exciting news! Mosaic has just had its 
300,000th item downloaded!  So far, Mosaic 
content has been viewed in 194 countries! 
There are nearly 8,000 items in the collection 
including student, educator, and archival 
submissions.  Most users find Messiah’s 
content via searches through Google.com  
or Scholar.Google.com.  Thank you to all 
who have contributed their works.

Success Continues for Mosaic, Messiah’s Institutional Repository 
 
 
 
The Murray Library hosted Trivia Night: America 
Edition on Friday, October 11. As a place of non-
partisan civic information on campus, the library was 
pleased to bring attention to the upcoming election 
through an evening filled with intellectual camaraderie, 
fierce competition, and, of course, a whole lot of fun! 
We were thrilled to see 7 teams of 2-6 players each, 
which brought our total to 33 attendees! 
The event went especially smoothly, thanks to library 
colleagues who worked diligently to make it all happen. 
Librarian Liz Kielley, our trivia host, kept the energy 
high throughout the night. Special appreciation to 
helpers Rachael Jasitt, Jenny Lawyer, and Sarah Myers, 
with Tracy Sheaffer as the behind the scenes event 
coordinator. Librarians Beth Transue and Janet Vogel 
served as lead scorekeepers.      
 
Trivia Night: America Edition in the Library  
 
 
The trivia questions included a range of topics on American civics, geography, presidents, history, and random US 
facts. The puzzle round featured a matching game of presidential pets to their owners.  
We are pleased to announce the top three teams that emerged victorious:

America’s first turkey trot took place more than a century ago.   
A local YMCA hosted the race, which included just six runners.  
Today they are a much bigger deal!  In 2018, around 1,000 turkey 
trots took place around the country.
