    Landmine Neutralization: Air Excavator

    The Landmine Neutralization team’s goal is to help neutralize dangerous ordnance in wartorn areas around the world. To accomplish this, the project team is working with our client, the HALO Trust. They are the world’s largest demining non-governmental organization. The HALO Trust works in many countries to remove the debris of war, including improvised explosive devices, landmines, and unexploded ordnance. We are helping our client achieve their goals through designing, prototyping, and testing of an earth and debris excavator that uses air to excavate areas. This project will help HALO’s deminers clear debris and dust from war-torn areas to help in their effort of neutralizing potential improvised explosive devices and unexploded ordnance. The team found that even though there is commercially available excavation equipment, they are either expensive, too big and cumbersome, cannot be remotely operated and integrated into an excavator, or lack the precision. We will be focusing on designing our prototype to operate reliably in harsh environments while fulfilling our client’s specifications for the excavation unit.     An Education Initiative to Increase Referral Acceptance Rates Among Hispanic Women

    Background: Hispanic women consistently experience the highest rates of cervical cancer mortality in the United States, leading to major health disparities in this vulnerable population. Problem: Barriers to cervical cancer screening for Hispanic women include lack of access to women’s healthcare and a lack of knowledge related to cervical cancer risk factors. Consequently, many Hispanic women do not receive adequate cervical cancer screening tests. Methods: After a thorough literature search and critique, available evidence supported the use of an educational intervention to improve access to women’s healthcare by increasing referral acceptance rates for women’s health services in the Hispanic population. This project utilized a convenience sample of Hispanic women presenting for primary care office visits at two free medical clinics. Intervention: Each consenting Hispanic woman received one-on-one education regarding individual risk factors for cervical cancer. After receiving the education, each participant was offered a referral for women’s health services. Data collection included the participant response to the offered referral. Results: The vast majority of participants who received the educational intervention (96.9%, n=63) accepted referral for women’s health services compared to the control group (0%, n=10). Conclusion: An educational intervention discussing individual cervical cancer risk factors is an effective method to increase referral acceptance for women’s health services in the Hispanic population

    Improving Preventive Care for International Travelers Through Primary Care Screening

    Background: Prior to recent restrictions on travel, international travel was popular with an increasing number of U.S. residents traveling to emerging markets, which may have unfamiliar health risks. In additional to risk of illness, travelers may carry nonendemic disease across country borders, increasing risks to public health. Problem: Though many international travelers report illness during travel or after returning home, only a portion receive a pretravel health consult for preventive care and education. Newer recommendations are to screen for upcoming international travel during routine health contacts; however, a travel medicine provider is best able to perform a comprehensive risk assessment and provide appropriate care. Methods: All adult patients were to be screened for upcoming international travel during each primary care visit at all University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Pinnacle primary care sites – referrals to the Travel Medicine Clinic (TMC) were then given as appropriate. Intervention: A tool to screen for upcoming international travel was embedded into the electronic medical record (EMR) at primary care visits with answers recorded by the rooming medical assistant. For patients with positive screenings, the provider received an immediate EMR prompt for a TMC referral. Results: Analysis of a total quota sample (n=200) found a significant increase in referrals to the TMC [x2 (1) = 118.7, p = .000] with a large effect size (d = .770) in the postintervention group. Additionally, asking about upcoming international travel does have a statistically significant effect on referrals to the TMC [pre group: 0%, n = 0; post group: 93.8%, n – 75, x2 (2) = 29.18, p = .000] with a strong positive association noted (r = .59). Conclusion: Screening for upcoming international travel at primary care visits does increase referrals to the TMC, potentially decreasing risks to travelers and public health

    Effect of etching on the oxidation of zinc selenide surfaces characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

The surface chemistry of zinc selenide (ZnSe) was studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) as a function of various surface treatments, including etching in solutions of hydrochloric acid (HCl), potassium permanganate:sulfuric acid (KMnO4:H2SO4), and ammonium hydroxide:ethanol (NH4OH:C2H6O). Samples were also treated in a UV-ozone (UV-O3) chamber, which removes organic contamination, but increases oxidation. All spectra were referenced to that of a clean ZnSe surface, obtained by cleaving a sample in vacuum. By applying consistent peak fitting to all samples, and correlating the trends for each component, we are able to distinguish between various oxide and hydroxide contributions. All etches preferentially remove Zn, leaving a Se-rich surface with Zn/Se ~ 0.8, and virtually all ZnO and SeO2 is removed, although oxygen and carbon is detected due reabsorption from the etch solution and air exposure. After UV-O3-treatment, the signals for ZnO and SeO2 are significantly increased for the HCl and KMnO4:H2SO4-etched samples. However, on the NH4OH:C2H6O-etched sample, hydrogen-containing species are likely trapped in the amorphous Se top layer, which after UV-O3 treatment contribute to the formation of SeOH and ZnOH, rather than SeO2 and ZnO, as well as desorption of surplus Se though H2Se, resulting in a close to stoichiometric ZnSe
