Ardent Activist: Anne E. Amos
Get PDFPresented on Friday, February 21 as part of Messiah College’s 2020 Humanities Symposium. This exhibit, “Vulnerabilities & Securities in Historic Harrisburg: From Abolition to Suffrage,” was produced by the Center for Public Humanities Student Fellows and Dr. Sarah Myers’s Public History Class.
Amos was involved in the temperance movement in Harrisburg. As a founding member of the Independent Order of Daughters of Temperance, she served as the Grand Recording Scribe and District Grand Deputy of the Good Samaritan Council, no. 1. The Council listed under her address on South Avenue functioned as a political hub in the Eighth Ward. Serving different roles in various social organizations, Amos was committed to what she viewed as the intertwined causes of temperance, women\u27s suffrage, and the betterment of the African American community in Harrisburg. At the 1902 Colored Ministers Conference in Harrisburg, Amos was the sole female speaker, joining other politicians and influential citizens such as Governor William Stone, Mayor Vance McCormick, Professor John P. Scott, and Mr. Dennee Bibb.

Reimagining Harrisburg\u27s old eighth ward through poetry

In the spring of 2018 Messiah College\u27s Center for Public Humanities began hosting poetry workshops for Harrisburg middle school students that focused on the vanished community of the Old Eighth Ward. With the help of the 1910 federal census data accessible through the Digital Harrisburg website, students engaged this little-known history of their hometown through field trips followed by poetry workshops. As students imagined the world through the lens of a person in the Old Eighth Ward, they drew on their own experiences and imagination. Published and performed for diverse audiences in different venues, these poems invite a wider public to rethink the City Beautiful movement as they reimagine the once vibrant community
The Effect of Perioperative Education in Undergraduate Nursing
Get PDFEducational institutions have modified their curriculum and as a result perioperative education in undergraduate nursing programs has decreased to where it is nonexistent in some institutions (Byrne, Root, & Culbertson, 2016). The decrease of perioperative education in nursing programs has led to a lack of new graduate nurses choosing to work in the perioperative setting and creating a nursing shortage (Castelluccio, 2011). The purpose of this evidence-synthesizing capstone project was to explore and determine how best practices to incorporate perioperative concepts into undergraduate nursing education curricula influence new graduate employment in perioperative nursing.
Methods: A total of 12 articles fit all parameters of inclusion and exclusion criteria and was critically appraised using the Johns Hopkins evidence-based practice model. The twelve articles that were synthesized all implemented or evaluated students that had completed a perioperative course in an undergraduate nursing program.
Results: The articles focused on one of two themes. The first theme was incorporating Quality and Safety Education in Nursing (QSEN) core competencies into the undergraduate nursing curriculum and having the students gain increased skills in the six QSEN core competency areas. The second theme was increasing the number of new graduate nurses that chose to work in the perioperative setting after graduation to combat the perioperative nursing shortage.
Implications: Incorporating the perioperative setting into the undergraduate nursing program curriculum was found to have the possibility of increasing the number of nurses that choose the perioperative setting after graduation. Also, the perioperative setting provides an environment where the six QSEN core competencies can be fostered. Therefore, more original research is needed to test perioperative educational methods for facilitation of quality and safety in nursing practice

Sustainable Agriculture: Aquaponic Solutions
Get PDFThe Sustainable Agriculture team is using a soil-free, closed-loop, agricultural technique called aquaponics to help lift communities out of malnutrition and poverty. Aquaponics techniques decrease the use of natural resources associated with growing crops. The Sustainable Agriculture team is partnering with Sheltering Wings, a non-profit based in Missouri who ministers with an orphanage and women\u27s shelter in Yako, Burkina Faso and Transworld Radio, a Christian radio broadcasting station located in Benin. The team currently has a best practice prototype in operation. The system will be optimized to fit client needs. In order to meet those needs, the team has been analyzing alternative materials for system construction, cooling techniques to maintain water temperature, and biological indicators for plant health. The goal of the project is to support clients from system construction to crop harvest. Support will be supplied via a comprehensive user manual that outlines how to build, operate, and maintain an aquaponics system and regular communication.https://mosaic.messiah.edu/engr2020/1012/thumbnail.jp
