Creating a Gold Standard Set of KELT RR Lyrae Stars
No full text2020 Celebration of Student Research and Creativity presentationThe Kilodegree Extremely Little Telescope (KELT) Survey is an exoplanet hunting survey that also finds variable stars. In this project, we focus on a type of pulsating variable star called RR Lyrae stars. RR Lyrae stars change brightness and color over a period of less than a day. The purpose of this research is to extract RR Lyrae stars from the KELT survey based upon their light curve and then characterize them. Lowering Mass Incarceration Rates By Releasing Nonviolent Drug Offenders

Many research suggests that mass incarceration is a negative epidemic the United States faces because it is racially biased and disproportionately impacts people of color and lower income people, and it is extremely costly and destructive to our economy. I share results from plenty of research that show we will save up to billions of dollars by releasing nonviolent drug offenders, which in turn will help with the problem of overcrowding in prisons. Treating the Soldier After the War

Most soldiers, even our veterans do not seek the proper treatment until months after coming home. In my research it shows that there needs to be more community outreach to our veterans. Possible Aromatase Inhibitors: Testing the Synthesis and Creating a Library of Diketone Compounds
No full text2020 Celebration of Student Research and Creativity presentationThe goal of our research is to produce a catalogue of diketone molecules in order to find a possible inhibitor for aromatase. To do this diketone compounds were produced in two steps by first synthesizing a base compound, and then a second step of microwave irradiation, producing a diketone. The compounds were confirmed by NMR after both steps in order to ensure synthesis was successful. Overuse of the Emergency Room for Non-Emergent Care

Overutilization for non-emergencies lead to prolong wait times, ED overcrowding, and massive increases in healthcare spending. While this is not a new problem within the healthcare system it is a substantial one contributing to approximately $38 billion annually in the United States alone. Assessing the Contribution of the Glutamatergic System to Risky Choice
No full text2020 Celebration of Student Research and Creativity presentationRisky choice is characteristic of several psychological disorders, including addiction. Using the risky decision task (RDT), rats had the opportunity to choose a small, safe food reward or a large food, risky reward associated with a foot shock. To understand the neurochemical processes of risky choice as assessed in the RDT, rats received three NMDA receptor drugs: MK-801, Ro 63-1908, and CGS 19755. MK-801 hindered the rats’ ability to discriminate reinforcer magnitude, making it difficult for them to differentiate between the two presented options. Furthermore, CGS increased the rats’ risky behavior, while Ro 63 decreased risky choice in male rats.https://youtu.be/ni44ehC70v

Transit and Employment Deserts in the Three Urban Northern Kentucky Counties
No full text2020 Celebration of Student Research and Creativity presentationNorthern Kentucky’s three main counties contain both employment deserts and transit deserts. An examination of where these areas occur, and where they intersect has numerous public policy implications. For this study, GIS datasets of transit routes and population, along with ZIP code business patterns were collected. A GIS map showing spatial distribution of employment deserts and transit deserts was created. The study shows that while excellent service exists in more populated areas, transit and employment deserts definitely intersect in rural portions of Northern Kentucky. Comparing Stress Levels of Students Who Participated In Paid And Unpaid Internships

The purpose of this study was to examine what kind of stress college students face. This study also examined whether there was a difference in stress levels between students who participated in a paid or unpaid internship. The results of this study were expected to find that students who participate in unpaid internships will experience more stress compared to those who do not, due to lack of financial resources. CLARIFYING PERSONALITY MEASUREMENT IN IO: Comparing a Funnel Format and Likert-Type Approach in Predicting Employability
No full text2020 Celebration of Student Research and Creativity presentationResearch shows that personality traits are generally predictive of job performance (Barrick et al., 2001), although relationships are often weak and/or inconsistent. One explanation is that traditional approaches assume unidimensionality, and do not allow for adaptability. This study was conducted to clarify current approaches to personality measurement. Specifically, participants (N = 400) were randomly assigned to either a traditional 5-point Likert type scale, or a novel funnel format approach. In each response format participants who chose the middle-category were asked to explain why. Results showed different response patterns across eight personality traits.
