LGBT+ Representation in Japanese Media
No full text2020 Celebration of Student Research and Creativity presentationThis research is on the representation of LGBT+ people in Japanese forms of entertainment media. The purpose of this research is to determine how queer people as a whole are treated in Japanese media, and whether this treatment reflects or influences how queer people are treated in reality. I will collect online survey responses from a variety of people to learn how the media they interact with treats LGBT+ characters, and what each participant thinks about the character’s treatment. I will also ask their opinions on real LGBT+ issues, and how they personally view the lives and struggles of the queer community. Needs in the Spanish-Speaking Population

Due to the nature of their situation the basic needs of immigrants, such as healthcare, can go unmet. How do the needs of Northern Kentucky/Cincinnati Spanish-speaking immigrants compare to those of Spanish-speaking immigrants nationally? By volunteering in the local community and comparing those experiences to academic articles about national trends, I was able to discover that the needs of immigrants, and how people are finding solutions to those needs, are not very different on the local and national level.https://youtu.be/qVoP41l_xb

No full text2020 Celebration of Student Research and Creativity presentationThe settlement of Kentucky was a long and hazardous journey that began with the discovery of the Bluegrass region by white explorers and culminated with statehood in 1792. The creation of the Wilderness Road by Daniel Boone and others allowed settlement to advance past the Proclamation Line of 1763 and gave long hunters a chance to explore never seen regions of Kentucky while helping to establish the first settlements. Men like William Calk documented their exploration along Wilderness Road in journals that provide a glimpse into the hardships and triumphs these men faced on their perilous journey.https://youtu.be/DPZGtQX3_V

Long outages can lead to a large loss in revenue and potential customers. To address this issue, the concept of high availability must be implemented. There are several methods of which to accomplish this, one however, in which we will explore is failover. More specifically, active passive failover. In our investigation, we will attempt to create a solution using corosync and pacemaker, services which help to monitor and implement solutions to maintain high availability. Development of Monitoring Instrumentation for Hydroponic Systems in Metabolomic Studies
No full text2020 Celebration of Student Research and Creativity presentationThe metabolomic profile of plants change under stressed conditions as different pathways are up or down regulated to aid in organism survival. The focus of this project is monitoring the effects of a more acidic environment on mini bell pepper growth in hydroponic systems. Acidity of water is more easily controlled than that of soil and can be regulated efficiently. In order to accurately monitor the home-built hydroponic system an instrument was designed, developed, and coded to monitor both pH and temperature simultaneously using a Raspberry pi 3 model B. This customization allows for monitored parameters, and timescale, to be selected based on the experimental growth conditions and is easily customizable for future experiments. The finished hydroponic system and instrument have been tested, demonstrating that the systems are stable and that the instrument could perform for the duration of our growing experiments. A Pilot Project to Support Brownfield Redevelopment in Northern Kentucky

Our goal was to apply a collaborative framework to enhance community engagement in risk assessment and decision-making. After searching for brownfield sites in Northern Kentucky, we focused on the historic Marianne Theater in Bellevue. City leaders are actively searching for a developer, but before the building can be used again, the risks from lead-based paint and asbestos must be mitigated. Three key outputs will be a promotional video highlighting the value of the theater, a GIS analysis of parking capacity in the surrounding business district, and a survey of brownfield developers highlighting best practices for redevelopment of historic properties in small to medium-sized cities.https://youtu.be/CcncqFJHO5
Sexual Assault: How NKU Students Perceive Consent

The current study seeks to examine and understand NKU students’ perceptions of consent regarding sex or any sexual act. A brief self-administered survey will be handed out to NKU students to assess their perceptions of consent. The results of this study are expected to show that NKU students’ definitions of consent are very different. These misinterpretations of consent can lead to a higher probability of sexual assault.
