Persistence to Graduate: A Study of First Generation College Students
No full text2020 Celebration of Student Research and Creativity presentationAt NKU, first generation college students (FGCS) make up 47% of the student population, yet only 36% persist to graduation, a lower percentage than that of other populations on campus. This study seeks to examine how school involvement and family support impact a student’s persistence. An online survey was used to determine what factors students perceive as being most influential to their college careers. It is anticipated that FGCS will be less likely to persist and have less family support than non FGCS. Student Loan Debt and Stress Levels in NKU Students
No full text2020 Celebration of Student Research and Creativity presentationPast research estimates that 44.7 million Americans possessed student loan debt as of 2018. Student loans are necessary for many Americans to attend college in the first place. This study aims to understand how student loan debt shapes stress levels and overall health of NKU students. Data will be collected using paper surveys completed by approximately 100 NKU students. High stress levels are expected to be associated with students who have acquired student loan debt. This cross sectional study uses an electronic self-report survey to examine the relationship between substance abuse among NKU students. It is anticipated that the findings of this study will bring attention to the barriers that students at NKU face when dealing with substance abuse. Activity performance and sprint speed in Lazarus lizards (Podarcis muralis)

Lizard thermal performance may or may not be plastic to allow successful invasion or introduction to new locations with different thermal regimes. Measuring locomotor performance can determine an individual’s ability to capture prey or escape predation. This study tests sprint speed performance in the introduced European wall lizard, Podarcis muralis, established in Cincinnati since 1952. Measuring performance of introduced lizards at various body temperatures on a 0.5 m racetrack will determine if their thermal optimum differs from the 33-35˚C thermal optimum of native European populations.https://youtu.be/gj1GrKiKz3

Substance Use and Incarceration

Moreover, substance use is associated with high incarceration rates. Very little is known about the relationship between substance use and prior incarceration among NKU students. This research will examine the impact of substance use on NKU students and how substance use is related to incarceration. The anticipated sample for this IRB-approved study consists of 200-300 NKU students. The results will give insight into the prevalence of substance use and past incarceration at NKU. However, previous research has shown that "fitspiration' websites emphasize physical appearance over health. A recent increase in 'fitspiration' accounts on social media provides a constant stream of images to millions of followers daily. This study examines 'fitspiration' accounts on the largest social media site, Instagram. Examining the top 20 posts using #Fitspiration, this research analyzed the messages conveyed, including an emphasis on thinness, appearance (versus health), and cultural ideals of sexuality and beauty.
