Impact of Perceived Discrimination on Healthcare Access in College Students
2021 Celebration of Student Research and Creativity presentation"Perceived discrimination in healthcare settings influences vulnerable populations, fostering feelings of distrust and decreased engagement in care. Literature regarding the impact of discrimination on college students is scarce. This study examines perceptions of discrimination in healthcare settings and their impact on access to healthcare in college students. Data were collected by administering online surveys via social media. It is expected that individuals who experienced more discrimination are to access healthcare less often than those who have not had these experiences. Findings could be used to better understand the relationship between perceived discrimination and its impact on healthcare access among college students."https://youtu.be/JdgZOsCTnZ
Understanding How College Students Navigate Food Insecurity
2021 Celebration of Student Research and Creativity presentation"Food insecurity is a growing challenge for college students. While many students utilize food pantries, this is not the full story of how students navigate food insecurity.
This exploratory study will be completed using an online survey distributed via social media. The survey will ask participants how they are able to feed themselves while being food insecure. The results of this study will grant insights into the various ways the current generation of college students adapt and overcome food insecurity, and help improve and adapt future practice."https://youtu.be/4kSel_JZId
The Effects of Cancel Culture: Examining The Public's Response to Apologies and its Lasting Impact on Reputation Recovery
2021 Celebration of Student Research and Creativity presentation"""Cancel Culture"", or cancelling describes the act of no longer supporting an individual, typically a public figure due to questionable behaviors. In 2020 alone, there were more cancel cases than any other year to date. Even though some were accused of exhibiting similar behaviors or making similar comments, the public responded differently, and therefore these canceled public figures were affected differently. This project will examine two “cancel cases” and how their careers were affected one year after their respective allegations occurred."https://youtu.be/JU9QQ9KCjR
COVID-19 and Social Isolation in Older Adults
2021 Celebration of Student Research and Creativity presentation"COVID-19 has shaken the world to its core and has had a profound impact on the physical health of older adults. The unrelenting pandemic has also seen a surge of loneliness and social isolation for the gerontology population. This study seeks to address the implications of COVID19 and social isolation for older adults. The current literature showed that older adults are significantly impacted at an increased rate for physical and mental health complications. Findings show that statistically older adults are impacted at a higher level than other age groups, which is why awareness and advocating for this age group is so crucial to the improvement of their well being. COVID- 19 and social isolation have taken a negative toll on the bio-psycho-social aspects of older adults and future research needs to focus on awareness, advocating, focusing on the long-term mental and physical health implications for older adults as well as their family members and the impact it has had on them."https://youtu.be/w6gUuneueg
Statistical Analysis of Knee Structures
2021 Celebration of Student Research and Creativity presentation"The primary goal of this study was to see if age affects the usability of various knee structures. Cadavers are used to assess each knee structure’s ability to withstand force and ultimately, examine the distribution of contributions across the knee structures. It is also important to assess potential relationships between knee structures and how they contribute to the ability to take force in relationship to one another. In this presentation we illustrate statistical methods used to identify how various knee structures are affected by age, determine if there are relationships between structures and determine if there are relationships between knee structures
and their ability to hyperextend."https://youtu.be/zaZwNJ6icD
Sex-Specific Gene Expression Associated with Zinc Homeostasis in Squirrelfish
2021 Celebration of Student Research and Creativity presentation"We looked at differential gene expression in squirrelfish at two different times of the year. We are specifically trying to determine if there is an upregulation in zinc transporting genes during breeding season when compared to nonbreeding season. Our results showed an upregulation in zip4 and zip10 in females compared to males and in November
females compared to June females."https://youtu.be/Fq5mGjnCVT
