Adverse Childhood Experiences Change Adulthood
2021 Celebration of Student Research and Creativity presentation"Early childhood events can unknowingly impact a person’s entire adult life. Learning some of what the milestones are for early childhood development is very important if a person works inside of a school. Being able to know these signs could potentially stop an Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE) from happening. Studies show the one in six people have experienced something of the sorts early on which explains why some people are the way they are in their adult life. Students causing problems in the classroom could scratch just the surface of what is actually going on in a tiny human’s life. It is up to the adults in any room where children learn and grow have a responsibility to recognize it and take action."https://youtu.be/Pkkzy_ydyJ
Integrating Creativity: Measuring helping professionals’ willingness to implement creative interventions
2021 Celebration of Student Research and Creativity presentation"Though research supports the use of creativity within the helping profession, it remains unclear how willing professionals are to use these modalities. This study aims to measure helping professionals’ perception and willingness to implement creativity within their existing practice. A brief self- report survey was administered and completed by 52 graduate level social work and counseling students.
Results showed that a majority of helping professionals view creativity as important within the profession. Nearly half of respondents reported that they did not feel equipped to provide these interventions, but 92% reported be willing to obtain additional certifications in order to do so."https://youtu.be/lf_eKDlNVP
The Synthesis of Tropinone and Heteroaryl Compounds to Create Aromatase Inhibitors
2021 Celebration of Student Research and Creativity presentation"The purpose of this experiment was to study the heteroaryl molecule, I80- H37. This molecule includes a tropinone scaffold and a heterocyclic ring, nitrogen heterocycles are important and used in pharmaceuticals due to their active agents that result in optimization of the properties of drugs/drug candidates. Heteroaryl compounds are important in the medical field. Our research will specifically provide helpful information regarding the aromatase inhibitors that may be useful in fighting breast cancer. It will also give students the opportunity to excel by providing them experience in Undergraduate Research in Organic Chemistry Course (UROCC) and Coursebased Undergraduate Research Experiences (CURE)."https://youtu.be/40VcMqmChQ
Sex Offenders v. Biases in Social Work
2021 Celebration of Student Research and Creativity presentation"Research shows that there are biases and attitudes towards those that are sex offenders which may prohibit them from being productive members of society. The study will help identify the attitudes and biases of current social work students and how it may impact their ability to provide quality care, ongoing support, and how biases on those with a previous sex offense can hinder the process of allowing sex offenders to enter society without judgment."https://youtu.be/98YRRNOu6h
Raising Awareness for Coral Reefs
2021 Celebration of Student Research and Creativity presentation"According to National Geographic, the diversity in coral reefs rivals that of the Amazon rainforest- an estimation of 2 million species rely on these underwater animals.
Because of this, they are foundational to the ecosystem as a whole, and by extension, us. Their biodiversity has been key in developing drugs to help find cures for many illnesses and diseases, such as cancer, as well as allowing fisheries and other businesses to thrive. Coral Reefs also act as a shield to protect shorelines from violent waves and storms, including areas where people live. This creative project will cumulate into a poetry collection with full illustrations, in order to raise awareness for these threatened, incredibly
important animals."https://youtu.be/vFEBxu-WQS
Using a contingency contract to increase student verbal participation
2020 Celebration of Student Research and Creativity presentationStudents with disabilities often have challenges positively engaging in the classroom due to characteristics of their disability. Not actively participating in class can result in missed opportunities to learn and less interactions with the content. A research-based behavior intervention plan using a contingency contract was implemented to increase a student’s self-initiated verbal participation in class. Analysis of the results determined that the intervention increased the student’s participation, although not to the desired extent. More frequent interventions across environments may increase the success of the interventions. Addressing a possible skill deficit regarding the processing of information may also improve the results.https://youtu.be/pj-ffQRr06
Unlock The Next Level Of Course Design : An Adventure in Gamification : Summer Online Faculty Institute, 2021
Gamifying educational content can be a very effective tool for many subjects in higher education. This session introduces participants to concepts of gamification, best practices, and how to utilize tools found outside and inside of a learning management system. Examples include free third-party apps, inclusive pedagogy, game-based lessons and Escape Room modules within Canvas aimed to enhance any subject matter. Participants do not need to be advanced course developers to build quality gamified content, and this session is designed to reach all levels of expertise.Center for Innovation & Technology in Education, Center for Teaching & Learninghttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rBkIyvQ-ALI
Why Would You Do That? Service in an Online, Asynchronous Seven Week Course (and a distant partner) : Summer Online Faculty Institute, 2021
Experiences with integrating service learning into asynchronous, online, 7-week courses using Transparent Assignment Design, Backward Design, and GEAR are shared. The “product” her students produce for the community partner are infographics. A theme that will receive special attention is “the why” of balancing content instruction and a service project in a truncated course term.Center for Innovation & Technology in Education; Center for Teaching & Learninghttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v5gCjHV7_3c
