Comparison of 624-type Capillary Columns II: "Equivalent Columns" Deviation in the Quantitative Analysis

    Get PDF
The present paper is the continuation of our "equivalent column" study. 624-type columns were investigated in a capillary gas chromatograph with a flame ionization detector (FID). In the preceding work, we used a homemade test mixture containing mainly acidic type compounds, which we complemented in the current study with additional basic test compounds to give a more precise description of the behaviour of the stationary phases. The columns had the same dimensions (30 m × 0.32 mm × 1.0 μm; length, internal diameter and film thickness, respectively) but were purchased from different manufacturers or the same manufacturer but from different batches. In addition, also their pre-life was different. These circumstances influence the condition of the stationary phase, and therefore their separation ability. These factors imply the necessity of testing the column from time to time. To distinguish between the separation ability of the columns, we compared the chromatograms, the retention times and retention order of the molecules, as well as peak asymmetry factors. Besides these parameters, quantitative determination is also performed based on the results of separation. We used the effective carbon number (ECN) and the limit of quantitation (LoQ) to demonstrate these differences which are caused by the different stationary phase conditions

Monte Carlo Simulations for Global and Local Interaction Buckling of Welded Box-sections

    Get PDF
The present study focuses on investigating the interaction behavior of local and global buckling resistance of welded box-section columns by using stochastic analysis. Previous studies mainly investigated this failure mode using experimental or numerical investigations but using deterministic approaches. The current research employs Monte Carlo simulations as a robust numerical tool to estimate the interaction buckling resistance. Stochastic variables are defined, encompassing variabilities in geometrical and material properties, as well as local and global imperfections. To facilitate these simulations, a rigorously validated numerical model is employed, utilizing geometrical and materially nonlinear analysis with imperfections (GMNIA). This advanced modeling approach accounts for the complex nonlinearities inherent in the behavior of welded box-section columns. The characteristic resistance derived from the Monte Carlo simulation is compared to 1. test results, 2. analytical buckling resistance according to the Eurocode design approach, and 3. previously proposed deterministic approaches. Within the research program, an improved generalized design formula is developed to estimate the buckling resistance for pure local, global, and interaction buckling modes. The new design equation is compatible with the design rules of the Eurocode and enhances the ease of use of the standard regulations

Failure Mechanism and Structural Optimization of the Primary Support Structure for Expressway Tunnel in Soft Rock: A Case Study

    Get PDF
When the highway tunnel crosses the soft rock, the primary support structure often fails and damages because it cannot withstand the excessive surrounding rock pressure. For the Magu tunnel in Yunnan Province, which is in the upper hard and lower soft stratum, the surrounding rock deformation is large, and the primary support structure occurs spray concrete cracking, steel arch frame twisting deformation. According to the convergence constraint curve, this paper proposes to adopt the primary support optimization design scheme of "shortening the bench length + optimizing the length and arrangement of anchor rods". According to the numerical simulation results of FLAC3D, the important indexes such as deformation convergence, surrounding rock stress, anchor axial force and thickness of plastic zone in different excavation support conditions are analyzed. The conclusions are as follows: 1. The soft rock at the foot of the benches does not provide sufficient support resistance, resulting in large settlement and convergence deformation that can cause the primary support structure to fail and become damaged. 2. The length of the middle bench and the primary support strength and stiffness contribute most to the deformation. 3. The deformation control effect of the short anchor rods on the surrounding rock is relatively weak. Increasing the length of anchor can better play the role of anchor suspension enhancement and give full play to the surrounding rock's own bearing capacity. Finally, the deformation of the tunnel is under control after adopting the optimized primary support structure, which ensures the smooth construction

Modeling and Study of Different Magnet Topologies in Rotor of Low Rating IPMSMs

    Get PDF
A study and performance analysis of magnet positions in different topology on the surface of rotor in permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) based on finite element method is observed here. A 3-phase interior PMSM is numerically simulated with ANSYS Maxwell 2018.1. Differently positioned permanent magnets improve the performance of PMSMs. Apart from handling nonlinear equations, FEM is used for simulation. ANSYS is used to analyze PMSM performance under variable conditions. This proposal examines a three-phase, 0.55 kW PMSM at 220 V, 50 Hz. Here rotor topologies of five types, namely, (i) spoke/tangential, (ii) saturable bridge / u-shape, (iii) V-shape, (iv) radial, and (v) segmented bridge permanent magnet rotor are taken for observation. The motive of this study is to analyze the performance of PMSMs in different rotor designs with different magnet positions. All topologies have been modeled and simulated with ANSYS. Each topology is compared in terms of electromagnetic and mechanical parameters. The 2D model is used to model the distribution of magnetic fields and the performance of operating parameters under transient and steady-state conditions. Magnetic flux, and efficiency are heavily influenced by the rotor shape with the volume of magnet. A study of radial force distribution and mechanical stress across rotor surface is also discussed. Motor performance is affected by the design of PMs

Control and Performance Analysis of an Indirect Matrix Converter Fed Triple Star Induction Motor

    Get PDF
Efficient operation is a recommended factor in most of industrial applications. In this paper, an indirect matrix converter (IMC) topology is developed and proposed to substitute the classical (AC/DC/AC) three phase converter topologies; where the control strategy is frequently performed with a voltage source inverter (VSI). Large electrolytic capacitors are viewed as hazardous due to their short lifetime compared to ordinary capacitors and power switches, as well as their contribution to the total bulk and weight of the converter. Matrix converters may be the answer to getting rid of the capacitor, shrinking the converter, and improving its efficiency (MC). These advantages are offset by the fact that the (MC) calls for a tricky switching technique based on pulse width modulation, which is prone to commutation failure. The direct frequency conversion using the indirect matrix converter (IMC) with many advantages has appeared as an alternative to these conventional voltage inverters. This study investigates a field-oriented control (FOC) scheme for indirect matrix converter fed triple star induction motor (TSIM). After building the proposed IMC converter topology, an adequate field-oriented control strategy-based space vector modulation (SVM) is proposed and adapted for the control of the triple star induction motor. The FOC technique guarantees flux and torque decoupling while ensuring good operation performance as required in many industrial applications. The obtained numerical simulation results show and confirm the effectiveness of this control scheme.

    Get PDF
A proposed multiband drone shaped fractal antenna (Antenna-1) is introduced in this paper that targets the most required frequencies used for radio frequency energy harvesting applications, including WLAN-2.4G, WLAN-5G, WLAN-6G, Mobile DCS1700, Mobile LTE and WIMAX services. A novel fractal shape is designed and combined with a standard square geometrical shape in order to implement the front patch of the antenna. The antenna is simulated with CST Studio Suite software and fabricated on FR-4 substrate. Different antenna stages with parametric study and optimization were implemented to get the best performance from the drone shape fractal antenna. The multiband (Antenna-1) supports six resonate frequencies (1.7155 GHz, 2.424 GHz, 3.36 GHz, 3.789 GHz, 5.843 GHz, 6.886 GHz) with peak gain of (2.83 dBi) at the frequency 2.45 GHz and a maximum bandwidth of (0.4281 GHz) at the frequency 5.8 GHz that make it a suitable antenna for radio frequency energy harvesting applications

Natural and Forced Convective Heat Transfer Enhancement for Solid Cylinders with Different Geometrical Shapes

    Get PDF
Enhancing heat transfer for both natural and forced convection is a common issue for any heat transfer process. Experimental studies have been carried out for six different geometrical shapes of solid bars for natural convection and forced convection with four different air velocities while keeping the same perimeter and length of the solid bars, which means the lateral surface area of the bars is the same. Results reveal that both the natural and forced convective heat transfer characteristics are greatly influenced by the geometrical shape in terms of Nusselt number (Nu), heat transfer coefficient (h), and heat transfer rate (q). In addition, isosceles and cylindrical shape geometry contribute to the lowest and highest heat transfer, respectively. As well, it is obtained from the results that convective heat transfer characteristics are directly related to the cross-sectional area, even if the perimeters are the same. Moreover, among the different geometrical shapes, the isosceles and hexagonal shapes take the shortest and longest duration to attain the steady-state condition in the conductive heat transfer process. The convective heat transfer characteristics are well-validated, with available results for both natural and forced convection heat transfer
