Identifying Cross-Cultural Communication Barriers on Global IT Rollout Projects
Numerous studies have been undertaken to investigate the issues long-term expatriates and global leaders managing multicultural teams encounter. However, there has been little research to date on cross-cultural communication challenges in project management, and this is particularly the case where the IT sector and rollout projects are concerned. Our research aimed to investigate the effectiveness of cross-cultural communication on IT-related projects by identifying key challenging factors encountered by research participants. The purposive sampling criteria included “multiple years of experience in global IT rollout projects” and “working in multiple countries, including other continents as well”. These criteria stipulated that participants possess a specific kind of experience in multicultural social contexts, based on which we interviewed ten experts. These global professionals come from a variety of cultural backgrounds, and have each worked in three to twelve countries (8.4 on average).An interpretative phenomenological approach was applied, in which the interpretation of participants’ lived experiences was linked to relevant literature: cross-cultural communication and cultural profiles, organisational and national culture models, and cross-cultural project management. Our findings revealed six significant areas that have emerged as key sources of intercultural problems on ERP related IT rollout projects: language, hidden assumptions, work-life balance, confrontation, time management, and apparent lies.The implications and value of our study derive from the lessons learned by the interviewed experts as they are recognised as individuals with valuable information and abilities – developed through significant international experience – that may inform the practice of other project managers similarly working for multinational IT organisations
Köztaurusz a 21. században? A Köztaurusz szabványossági vizsgálata
In Hungary, a general thesaurus called Köztaurusz (Pubtaurus means Public Thesaurus) is used to index documents collected in the national library and public libraries. The thesaurus, which also serves as a subject heading scheme, has been built over decades and is still being updated, but it has been built according to standards that have now been withdrawn. This study examines the extent to which the Köztaurusz complies with the currently valid international (ISO) thesaurus standard. As the Köztaurusz is essential for the daily work and standardized topical indexing of the National Széchényi Library and many public libraries, the continued standardization of the system is essential for its further development. The first step in modernizing the Köztaurusz and keeping it up to date with the challenges of our times is this standardization exam study.Magyarországon a Köztaurusz elnevezésű általános információkereső tezaurusz szolgál a nemzeti könyvtárban, illetve a közkönyvtárakban gyűjtött dokumentumok tárgyszavazására. A tárgyszórendszerként is szolgáló tezaurusz évtizedeken át épült, jelenleg is folyamatosan gyarapodik a tárgyszójegyzék, ám mára már hatályon kívül helyezett szabványok figyelembe vételével készült. A tanulmány azt vizsgálja, hogy a Köztaurusz mennyire felel meg a hatályos nemzetközi (ISO) tezauruszszabványnak. Mivel a Köztaurusz alapvető fontosságú az Országos Széchényi Könyvtár és számos közkönyvtár mindennapi munkájában és szabványos tartalmi feltárásában, a rendszer mindenkori szabványossága elengedhetetlen annak továbbfejlesztése érdekében. A Köztaurusz modernizálásának és a kor kihívásainak megfelelő szinten tartásának legelső lépése ez a szabványossági vizsgálat

A bibliográfiai univerzum a nyomtatott szöveges forrásokat illetően pár évtizede még viszonylag egyszerűnek számított. Voltak a könyvek és voltak az időszaki kiadványok. De az Internet ezt is megváltoztatta. Egyre újabb és újabb forrástípusok jelentek meg. A könyvtáraknak újra kellett gondolniuk az addigi tipológiát, hogy az új források is beilleszthetők legyenek a rendszerbe. Ez a 2000-es évtized második felében meg is történt. Ez az új tipológia azonban egy évtized múlva az új felhasználótípusok megjelenése miatt ismét finomhangolásra szorult. Az okoseszközök megjelenésével az algoritmusok váltak az információ első számú fogyasztójává. Az információforrás és az emberi felhasználó közé beékelődve fontos kapuőr funkcióval is rendelkeznek. Ha nem akarjuk, hogy a könyvtári információ fennakadjon ezen a szűrőn, akkor át kell strukturálnunk az adatok rögzítését, illetve szolgáltatását. Ahhoz, hogy érdemben változtatni tudjunk a gyakorlaton, először az elméletet kell megváltoztatnunk. A 3R utáni RDA és a készülő ISBD-M is már az időszakosság finomhangolt értelmezésére építkezik
Phytochemical Diversity and Related Bioactivity of Ethyl Acetate Fraction from Different Organs and Provenances of the Edible Halophyte Crithmum Maritimum L.
Sea fennel (Crithmum maritimum L.) is a facultative halophyte from the Apiaceae family. The variation of phenolic compounds, the antioxidant and antibacterial activities of different extracts of different organs of sea fennel were investigated. The roots, stems, leaves and seeds were collected from three bioclimatic stages of Tunisia. Solvent fractionation method (using aqueous acetone, petroleum ether and ethyl acetate) was adopted to separate the extract ingredient and to concentrate phenolics. Total phenolics, total flavonoids, and condensed tannins significantly varied between organs and localities. In leaves, the highest level of phenols was detected in the upper and sub-humid zones. However, in stems the high amounts of phenols were observed in semiarid climate. The antioxidant activity was evaluated through four different methods and the antimicrobial activity was assessed against five human pathogenic bacteria and a fungal strain. Multivariate analysis showed significant effect of organ and locality on the antioxidant properties. Results of the antibacterial activities showed significant differences among extracts and was reflected by a large spectrum of activity ranging from totally not active (Zones of inhibition (zi) < 1 mm) to very high activity (zi >16 mm). Combined statistical results allowed to select the more potent fraction to be analyzed using reversed-phase HPLC (RP-HPLC). The flavanol epigallocatechin was identified as a major phenolic compound which contributed greatly to the antioxidant capacity. The results established in this study highlighted the importance of this halophyte cash crop in the human diet as natural source of active components
Effect of Nanophotocatalyst WO3 Addition on PVDF Membrane Characteristics and Performance
The addition of photocatalyst materials in the membrane has great potential to increase membrane performance and characteristics. In this study, nano photocatalysts WO3 were added to the polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane for process water treatment from rubber industry. The results of SEM and XRD showed the presence of nano photocatalyst WO3, indicating the successfully embedded nano photocatalyst in PVDF membranes. The addition of nano photocatalyst materials has increased hydrophilicity by increasing the membrane's water uptake ability and decreasing the membrane's contact angle. The PVDF-WO3-2%wt membrane showed the highest flux value at 64.29 L m−2 h−1 with 96.40%, 85.61%, and 93.88% of chemical oxygen demand (COD), total dissolved solid (TDS), and ammonia rejection, respectively. The photocatalytic degradation effect of PVDF-WO3 is proven by a significant difference in the filtration results under vis-light irradiation. Membrane resulted in a better performance in photo-filtration (visible light) than in the dark condition. The PVDF-WO3-2%wt membrane also showed an excellent reusability after being used for 8 hours of the photo-filtration process. This research is promising to increase the use of photocatalytic membranes in rubber wastewater treatment into clean water
Laboratory Investigation and Field Performance Evaluation of Chemically Stabilized Cement Treated Subbase
There is a growing concern over the depletion of naturally occurring construction materials for lower unbound pavement layers. Stabilization of locally available materials has attracted considerable research interest. Nanotechnological additives have a good potential in stabilizing materials that are incompatible for pavement construction. The main aim of this research is to evaluate the use of nano-chemical additives on the laboratory and field characteristics of cement treated subbase (CTSB) mixes prepared with locally available soil. Locally available soil, cement, and nano-chemicals were utilized to assess their effect on California bearing ratio (CBR) and unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of chemically treated subbase mixes. The UCS of the soil-aggregate mix treated with cement improved by 103.4% on the addition of nano-chemical additives. The soaked CBR of the mix treated with the optimum dosage of cement and nano-chemical was increased by 219%. The laboratory-based evaluation was followed by construction of field sections utilizing the control subbase (soil-aggregate only), cement-treated subbase, and cement+nano-chemical treated subbase mixes. Deflectometric investigations were performed on the field sections using a light weight deflectometer. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy tests were carried out to study the microstructure of subbase mixes. Stabilisation using nano chemicals resulted in additional phases of ettringite that caused densification of matrix compared to pristine soil-aggregate mix. Pavement analysis and economic analysis of the different subbase mixes were also performed. The subbase prepared with 3% cement and 1.2 kg/m3 dosage of nano-chemical additive was found to be the optimum considering laboratory and field performance
Optimization of H-type Anti-slide Pile Support Structure Based on RSM-NSGA-II
The parameters of an h-type anti-slide pile are optimized and analyzed with respect to its structural characteristics. Based on laboratory model tests, further analysis of its stress characteristics is carried out through numerical simulation methods. Then, the response surface methodology (RSM) combined with the NSGAII algorithm was employed to perform multiobjective optimization of the reinforcement performance and engineering cost for h-type anti-slide piles regarding landslide consideration. Finally, the entropy weight TOPSIS method was used for comprehensive evaluation to obtain the optimal structural parameters. The results show that the bending moment distribution of the front and rear rows of h-type piles first increases and then decreases with increasing depth, and the front soil pressure of the pile gradually increases. Using RSM-NSGA-II instead of finite element modeling can shorten the optimization time, and the accuracy of the surrogate model reaches 94.8%. NSGA-II is much stronger than that of the particle swarm optimization algorithm. The entropy weight method combined with the TOPSIS method can obtain the unique optimal solution from the Pareto solution set without prior knowledge. The h-type anti-slide pile with the best structural parameters reduces the cost by 75.19%, while the slope safety factor increases by 47.39%. This method provides a new idea for structural optimization
The Effect of Nonlinear Sloshing Response of Water on Seismic Behavior of Reinforced Concrete Elevated Water Tanks
In this study, the fluid-structure interactive behavior by using the Westergaard approach and the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method of a 1000 m3 reinforced concrete (RC) elevated water tank under different seismic activities i.e., Kocaeli, Van, Kahramanmaraş and Kobe earthquakes was investigated. In the SPH method, the resulting hydrodynamic pressures were applied to the interior of the wall of the structure as an external force which is made as mass additions to the tank walls in Westergaard approach. With the help of software developed, the load carrying system of the elevated water tank was modeled using the MATLAB Partial Differential Equation Toolbox (PDE) software, based on the finite element method, and its verification was made by comparing with ANSYS software model. Dynamic condensation method was used to perform time history analyses for the cited earthquakes. The time-dependent solutions of partial differential equations are solved with the help of ODE45 functions based on Runge-Kutta method, by arranging the equation of motion in state-space format. The cited tank was analyzed linearly under different seismic activities for empty, half-filled (50%) and full-filled (100%) cases and the obtained results were compared with each other. It has been concluded that considering nonlinear behavior of the fluid during the earthquake with the SPH method provided consistency with the real behavior of RC elevated water tanks and gave more realistic results than the traditional Westergaard approach
Temperature-based Evapotranspiration in the WSVI Drought Index Implementation: Case Study: Pannonian Basin
Drought is a natural hazard that affects environmental and socio-economic development. In this study, the Water Surplus Variability Index (WSVI), which is based on both precipitation and Penman-Monteith (PM) evapotranspiration (ET) estimates, was used to quantify drought. The application of the WSVI is not possible in some locations because of the missing data for estimating ET. The key objectives of this research were to 1. compare the different temperature-based WSVIs for the 1-, 3-, 6- and 12-month timescales with the original PM-based WSVI; 2. improve the WSVI by replacing the full-set PM equation with the corresponding temperature-based ET equation, such as Hargreaves, adjusted Hargreaves, Thornthwaite, modified Thornthwaite or temperature-based PM; and 3. compare the best temperature-based WSVI with the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI). The set of meteorological data was obtained from several stations from Pannonian Basin (Budapest, Debrecen, Novi Sad and Sombor). According to statistical indicators, the Hargreaves-based WSVI (WSVIH) was ranked first or second for each time period at all locations. The WSVIH was additionally tested using the SPI for each location and each timescale. The obtained results indicated the capability of the WSVIH to quantify drought frequency, duration and severity identified by the SPI. Finally, the WSVI can be recommended using the Hargreaves equation instead of the full-set PM equation in future WSVI implementations in the Pannonian Basin
