One of the most characteristic features of adult learning in our time is that learning pathways have broadened to an incredible extent. Alongside formal, school-based learning, non-formal learning, usually linked to work, has become a key player. Although we talk little about it, informal learning, which takes place in leisure time and in any activity, consciously or unconsciously, during which we acquire knowledge, skills, and competencies that are relevant and expected in many labor markets. Informal learning experiences can play a role in career orientation, further education, and the choice of university major for young people. This case study presents the characteristics and main results of a pilot study, which was awarded funding under the UNKP 2023-3 grant program, preceding doctoral research aimed at examining the role of informal learning experiences in career and subject choice. Beyond the issue of the background of higher education choice, the research is also interesting because because in recent years, so-called pilot projects have been used more and more frequently, in this case prior to doctoral research, in which, at the beginning of the research, the research questions, hypotheses, and ideas and plans regarding the methodology used are clarified in a smaller-scale, experimental study. Today's rapidly changing and unpredictable labor market expectations pose serious challenges for young people struggling with career orientation and subject choice, as well as for higher education institutions struggling with the continuous development of subject offerings and curriculum content. Quick employment and successful integration into the workplace are key issues for young people, which is why they seek professions that develop competencies, cross-professional, so-called transversal skills, and soft skills that ensure effective work and successful integration in several fields. The key to this may lie in the increasingly prominent world of informal learning, which is an important arena for acquiring the soft skills required in the labor market, but which can also play a prominent role in career guidance, alongside formal school-based training. During the pilot research preceding the doctoral research[1], we were aware that no general conclusions could be drawn from the results, so our aim was to explore the main areas to be examined within the topic and to clarify the purpose and theme of the study.   [1] The pilot research for the doctoral research was carried out with professional support from the Ministry of Culture and Innovation's New National Excellence Program (code number ÚNKP-23-3) funded by the National Research, Development and Innovation Fund within the framework of the ELTE PPK NI andragogy program.

Investigation of the Mechanical Properties of Self-compacting Concretes Containing Mineral Additives Produced by Substituting Fine Recycled Aggregate in Different Rates

    Get PDF
In the study, the effect of fine recycled concrete aggregate (FRCA) replaced by natural fine aggregate on some mechanical properties of self-compacting concrete (SCC) containing different types and amounts of mineral additives was evaluated. In the concretes produced for this purpose, natural fine aggregate was replaced with FRCA at the ratios of 35%, 70% and 100% by weight. For comparison, concretes without FRCA were also produced. Three different mineral additives, namely fly ash (FA), metakaolin (MK) and silica fume (SF), were used in different ratios. In order to determine the fresh state properties of concretes, unit weight, slump-flow, T500 time, J-ring and sieve segregation tests were carried out, while compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, flexural strength, Böhme abrasion and dynamic elasticity modulus determination tests were carried out on hardened concretes. Based on the findings obtained, there is no significant adverse effect on the mechanical properties of concrete with 35% FRCA replacement. However, when FRCA is used at higher ratios, the negative effect on mechanical properties becomes evident. In particular, Böhme abrasion is quite high at high FRCA replacement ratios. Provided that the conditions in which the research was carried out are valid, the negative effects of FRCA substitution on the mechanical properties of concrete can be eliminated by changing the type and combination ratios of mineral additives used

Effect of Local Shear Deformation and Soil Flexibility on the Global Buckling Stability of Uniform and Non-uniform Buildings

    Get PDF
Traditional continuous models do not capture the deformation mechanism due to local shear in coupled shear wall-based buildings, resulting in a significant underestimation of the global buckling loads. To address this limitation, the present study introduces a novel generalized sandwich-type continuous beam to derive both analytical and numerical solutions for estimating the global critical buckling load in buildings with uniform and non-uniform properties. A closed-form analytical solution is developed for uniform buildings subjected to a top-concentrated axial load, while a numerical approach – based on a modified transfer matrix method – accommodates arbitrarily distributed vertical loads and variable stiffness distributions. Soil flexibility is incorporated by modeling lateral and rotational springs at the base. The proposed numerical method maintains a constant matrix size (6 × 6), regardless of the number of discretized segments, with coefficients derived analytically. Validation against finite element models shows excellent agreement. A parametric study involving 954 cases indicates that the proposed continuous beam and its solution method limits the maximum error to –4.40%, lying on the conservative (safe) side of structural design. In contrast, the classical continuous beam shows errors up to –144.71%, raising concerns over its reliability. Furthermore, soil flexibility was found to reduce the critical buckling load by as much as 46.09%. The results underscore the robustness and practical applicability of the proposed continuous beam and its solution methods, providing a reliable framework for the structural analysis and design of buildings with coupled shear walls

Investigation of Wind Loading on a Multi-span Anticlastic Tensile Membrane Surface: A CFD Approach

    Get PDF
The determination of the wind loads of tensile membrane structures is of crucial importance during their design, since the extremely light weight of the structures can easily lead to severe wind effects on the doubly curved surfaces. According to the current state of the art, almost exclusively wind tunnel test is applied, which is the most reliable method today. On the other hand, the time and cost-consumption of the physical measurements, as well as the questions around the Reynolds number dependency of the wind loads, are serious bottlenecks of such an experimental method. Computational Fluid Dynamics offers an excellent and flexible tool to overcome such problems, but the currently available computational powers prevent the application of robust and high-fidelity scale-resolving methods. The paper deals with the Computational Wind Engineering-based determination of the mean wind loads on a doubly curved tensile membrane structure, applying the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes framework. The conventional k-ω Shear Stress Transport and the recently developed generalized k-ω turbulence models are applied in the simulations. The latter model provides a set of tunable model parameters, where the modification of the coefficients is much clearer and straightforward compared to other turbulence closure models. By tuning the relevant parameter during the simulations, the second model provided significantly better results. The numerical results are validated against experimental data from previous wind tunnel measurements. The internal forces of the membrane in the principal directions of the orthotropic membrane material are computed, and the maximal values of the experimental and numerical-based distributions are compared

Diverse Emperor Penguin Algorithm for Partially Shaded PV Array Reconfiguration

    Get PDF
A significant challenge in the operation of Photo-Voltaic (PV) array is partial shading, which drastically reduces the power output. Shaded arrays exhibit numerous local Maximum Power Point (LMPP) alongside a single Global Maximum Power (GMP). Reconfiguring shaded modules to extract the GMP is crucial, and achieving this relies heavily on a uniform shadow distribution across the PV surface. This paper proposes a novel strategy, Diverse Emperor Penguin (DEP) algorithm, for uniform shadow distribution across shaded PV arrays. It is a onetime static reconfiguration technique based on the commonly occurring shading patterns in a given location. The proposed strategy was tested on 9 × 9 PV array at ten distinct shading patterns in MATLAB/Simulink platform. The analytical results observe the power enhancement at all the shading patterns and highest power improvement is 23.01%, 10.20% when compared with standard TCT and SuDoKu configurations respectively. The same were tested experimentally on 3 × 3 PV array and compared with standard TCT and SuDoKu configurations and the results obtaind confirm that the proposed technique has superior performance compared with stated techniques

Robust Model Predictive Current Control for Dual-Star Induction Machine

    Get PDF
Predictive current control (PCC) is considered as an effective and efficient strategy for controlling multiphase drives, offering superior flexibility, fast dynamic response, and reduced computational complexity compared to conventional control methods. This paper presents a robust PCC approach for a dual-star induction machine (DSIM), integrated with direct field-oriented control (DFOC), using proportional-integral (PI) controllers to control mechanical speed and flux to analyze the efficiency of the drive system's behavior in complex challenging scenarios caused by motor's external perturbations and parameters uncertainties. The proposed PCC algorithm incorporates a two-step-ahead prediction horizon to evaluate a cost function that minimizes the deviation between reference and predicted stator currents. The control signal is selected from a finite set of voltage vectors (VVs) provided by a two-level voltage source inverter (2L-VSI), and the optimal switching states combination is selected to ensure precise control and improved performance. The proposed framework is validated through comprehensive simulations conducted in the Simulink/MATLAB environment. The findings achieved superior disturbances rejection capabilities, and minimized steady-state error. Furthermore, the system highlights an effective performance and robustness against simultaneous extreme parameters variations, especially under full load for very low speed scenario
