    The Gateway Effect and Predicting Hard Drug Use

    This paper uses a linear probability model to predict the use of drugs based upon demographic variables as well as information on the use of other substances collected from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health. In addition to analysis of various demographic variables, a two stage regression is used to isolate the marginal effect of tobacco use on marijuana use, and marijuana use on the use of illicit drugs other than marijuana. This use pattern is commonly referred to as a \ gateway drug\ theory. The findings are consistent with a traditional gateway drug theory, finding that the dominant determinant of marijuana use is tobacco use, and that the dominant determinant of illicit drug use is marijuana use. Additionally, several demographic variables are found to have a strong effect on likelihood of using marijunana and illicit drugs

    Termite Nutrient Preference and Impacts on Decomposition

    Termites are the major wood decomposers in warmer climates and their activity, which can impact nutrient cycling, decomposition, and soil erosion, depends on the availability of biologically essential nutrients; termites require certain nutrients and shortfalls can decrease termite activity. Of the ~25 biologically essential elements, phosphorus (P), sodium (Na) and potassium (K) are highly concentrated in termites relative to wood. This nutritional disparity suggests that in environments with wood rich in these elements, wood may decompose faster because these nutrients limit termite survival, reproduction and function. Because K is essential for termite nervous system function and osmoregulation, I predict that termites will be most attracted to wood with increased K. To test this prediction, we deployed artificial wood substrates (100% cellulose sponges) saturated in one of six treatments: 1) K (KCl), 2) K+P (KH2PO4), 3) Na (NaCl), 4) Na+K (NaCl + KCl), 5)Na+K+P (KH2PO4 + NaCl), 6) H2O (Control). Ten blocks with one of each treatment were separated by ≥30m and sponges within blocks were separated by 3m. After three months, sponges and a soil sample below sponges were collected and analyzed for presence or absence of termites. Invertebrates were extracted from sponges using Berleses and sponges were dried and reweighed for mass loss. Preliminary results suggest that termites were most attracted to K only sponges and least to controls and decomposition was highest in K+P and Na+K+P treatments. Together, this suggests that K and P may limit termite activity and wood decomposition

    Consciousness and Art

    Across human cultures, there is a boundless variety of aesthetic preferences and modes of artistic representation, but as with many other aspects of human behavior, certain universalities emerge upon broad analysis of global art history. It seems almost trivial to point out, for example, that line is present in every society that ever made drawings or paintings. Recent art history has demonstrated that line is not mandatory when making a picture: Impressionism, pointillism, color field painting, and abstract expressionism are full of examples of art that do not utilize line at all. But these carefully chosen exceptions serve to point out the ubiquity of line, which is potentially explained in large part by an evolutionary psychology perspective. As an artist, I explore this concept. Vision, like all perceptual processes, cuts utilitarian corners when reporting information to the brain and as a result omits, modifies, supplements, and takes wild guesses with sensory input. The resulting perceptual experience of reality is in large part a construction, and while useful and not noticeably contrived, it is no more representative of an objective reality than the art that it makes possible. In this perspective, line is revealed to be an invention of the human mind, and a result of a necessarily sensitive process of edge accentuation in the visual process. My presentation for the symposium would analyze the elements and principles of art through a cognitive psychological perspective using research done in that field, art history, and my own body of work
