Exploring Ransomware on The Oculus Quest 2

    Get PDF
Virtual Reality Head Mounted Displays, also coined VR headsets, have breached barriers that held back widespread adoption and usage in the past. While covering the reasons for this large-scale spread, the idea is introduced that HMDs, which are standalone units, can become targets for malware. This work explores how applicable Android ransomware is to the Oculus Quest 2’s attack surface, due to the Quest’s usage of Android 10 as a base operating system. Existing ransomware samples are evaluated to determine an abstract definition of ransomware. This work also introduces SRS, Simple Ransomware Sample, which acts as a Proof-of-Concept, a minimum viable ransomware for testing ransomware on Android device attack surfaces. SRS is designed around the abstract ransomware definition that is derived. In addition to SRS, WannaLocker and Koler samples are used in testing. All samples are compared through execution on the Oculus Quest 2. Observed ransomware sample behavior is compared to expected behavior of each ransomware sample, as well as to the abstract ransomware definition. Ransomware sample success is evaluated based on expected behavior and the ability of the samples to execute definitional ransomware traits. The conclusion is that the Oculus Quest 2’s attack surface does contain the necessary aspects for the successful execution of ransomware

Assessing the Relationship Between Convergence of Leader-Follower: Motivational Climes and Leader-Member Exchange

    Get PDF
Leadership involves two or more parties, the influence of at least one party upon the other, and the bi-directional influence towards a mutually agreed upon goal. A notable shortcoming in leadership research is the lack of emphasis on recognizing both the leader and follower in the interdependent relationship and instead measuring perceptions from the viewpoint of only one member. Leader Member Exchange (LMX) theory has emerged as one of the most heavily researched approaches to understanding leadership and explicitly recognizes the centrality of the leader-follower relationship. The congruence between leader and follower perceptions has been found to affect both LMX quality and various leadership and work outcomes (e.g., work engagement, OCBs, job satisfaction, commitment), yet many LMX researchers fail to take congruence into consideration or to accurately measure the construct from the perspectives of both the leader and follower. Additionally, motivation is inherent to the definition of leadership, but many leadership theories (including LMX) fail to explicitly recognize the important contribution. Reversal theory provides a motivational grounding for exploring the climates (Carter & Kourdi, 2003) created by a leader that allow followers to experience situations in different ways (Apter, 2005). The present study addressed these gaps in LMX research and investigated the convergence on motivational climates as an antecedent to the quality of the LMX relationship at a purely dyadic level of analysis. The study employed a Within-and-Between Analysis (WABA) which involved 114 matched leader-follower dependent dyads. Results did not find the variables or relationships between them to operate at the dyadic level. Additionally, results supported within-group effects when investigating the variables alone at the group level and results were uninterpretable when investigating the relationship between them at the group level (e.g., either the leader or follower level)

Novice Teachers’ Perceptions of the Most Effective Instructional Leadership Practices

    Get PDF
This quantitative study examined novice teachers’ perceptions of their principals’ most effective instructional leadership practices to ensure a positive school climate. Principals’ perceptions were examined to assess their understandings of novice teachers’ needs and whether principals have the knowledge to support novice teachers’ pedagogical needs. Novice teacher experts (n=11) and principals (n=8) participated in a modified Delphi study of three rounds. A three-part instrument, comprised of a survey, Likert scale (Compass Louisiana Leader Performance Evaluation Rubric), and suggestions were used to assess principals’ and novice teachers’ perceptions. Lawshe’s Content Validity Ratio (CVR) measured validity. Novice teacher experts and principals validated 48 IL practices that pertained to classroom management, mentorship, coteaching, communication, lesson modeling, collaboration, data-driven decisions, formal and informal observations, curriculum assessments and school mission. Seven of the 48 IL practices were created from Round One and Round Two of the modified Delphi study by novice teacher experts. Principals may use the results to foster productive and effective school climates that perpetuate novice teacher retention

Examining Posttraumatic Growth as a Moderator of the Relations between each of Hope, Gratitude, and Well-Being among Trauma-exposed College Students

    Get PDF
College students who are exposed to trauma are likely to experience negative consequences such as adjustment difficulties, negative coping mechanisms, and poor academic achievement. It is important to identify factors that can reduce the effects of related negative outcomes and enhance an overall sense of well-being in the aftermath of a traumatic event. Previous research has shown gratitude and hope can increase well-being among trauma-exposed individuals. However, more research is needed to explore factors that may affect the degree to which both gratitude and hope promote well-being in this population. There are two main objects of the present study: First, the present study examined whether positive human traits (gratitude and hope) can increase both subjective well-being and psychological well-being among trauma-exposed college students. In addition, the current study assessed whether posttraumatic growth moderates the effectiveness of these traits on well-being. A total of 242 participants were included in final data analysis. Consistent with previous studies, the findings demonstrated that there were positive associations between positive human traits (gratitude and hope) and well-being. Additionally, the results suggest that posttraumatic growth did not moderate the relationship between hope and well-being. However, posttraumatic growth was found to significantly moderate the effects of the gratitude on well-being. Further research and practical implications of this study were discussed

    02. “I, Poor Monster” or “Call Me Rosalind”: Women as Men in Twelfth Night and As You Like It

    No full text
We in the twenty-first century typically view the past as sexist, with no path for a woman but marriage to a man who would always treat her as lesser. In Shakespeare’s day, Queen Elizabeth I was the sole monarch of England, never marrying and thereby never surrendering her power. Even with this independent woman in the ultimate position of authority, gender roles with men in a position of power over women increasingly defined daily life in Renaissance England. However, in comedies, social positions could be temporarily flipped through cross-dressing and other explorations that would be considered improper in the real society of the day, as long as the plays ended with social norms being restored. In Shakespeare’s two comedies As You Like It and Twelfth Night, Or What You Will, the female main character dresses as a man for the majority of the play, and her relationship with her eventual male love interest is built up through interactions in which he does not know that she is a woman. The effect of Viola’s and Rosalind’s reversed gender roles on their relationships with their love interests show the shared theme of the importance of social equality when falling in love, while still reinforcing the necessity of opposite-sex marriage in early modern society

    01. ExoSense: a microprobe-based method for single-step isolation and genetic of exosomes

    Get PDF
The goal of this study is to develop a new method for non-invasive and selective isolation of exosomes from cell media. Exosomes, a type of extracellular vesicles, contain proteins and RNA biomarkers for the diagnosis of diseases. The core of this technology is a stainless-steel microprobe (300μm × 30mm) functionalized with anti-CD63 antibodies that specifically capture pure exosomal subpopulations. This method provides several advantages over commercial exosome-purification technologies. These include increased selectivity, purification of an antigen-specific subpopulation of exosomes, and direct integration of the microprobe with genetic analysis instruments. Experiments were performed to assess the efficiency of the functionalization of the probe as well as the number of captured exosomes, exosomal protein, and RNAs per probe. Scanning electron imaging was used to visualize the polyelectrolyte coverage while fluorescent imaging was applied to determine the efficiency of the chemical bond of NH2-conjugated biotin to the COOH group of polyacrylic acid. The captured exosomes were quantified by measuring the activity of acetylcholinesterase (AChE). The BCA protein assay was utilized to quantify the amount of protein captured per microprobe while Agilent Bioanalyzer 2100 was used to assess the quantity and quality of the exosomal RNA. Our results indicate that the microprobe-based technology isolates CD63-positive exosomal subpopulation (23×106 exosomes/probe) from astrocytes derived cell media after 16 hours of incubation. The exosomal fraction is enriched in small RNAs. Future work will focus on the assessment of blocking reagents (BSA, PEG) to reduce the binding of the cell-media-derived protein to the surface of the probe
