    A novel dataset for baby broccoli identification by using YOLOv8 model

    As global population increases, the need for agricultural automation becomes crucial for a stable food supply. An autonomous mechanism for picking baby broccoli could economically benefit farmers and society. To date, efforts to develop an automated baby broccoli harvesting solution have been absent. A key step in automation, particularly for the automated recognition of baby broccoli heads through computer vision, involves the creation of a rich dataset that sufficiently captures the characteristics of baby broccoli heads, as such a dataset has not yet been collected or published. This paper marks the first step towards automating baby broccoli harvesting by creating a novel dataset and testing its accuracy for precise identification. We have gathered data using custom software and a RealSense D435 Depth camera, known for its depth and stereo vision capabilities. The initial results of the model that was trained from our dataset had mAP values ranging from 0.869 to 0.942. This initial training shows that the dataset fits the purpose of detecting baby broccoli heads. Further results shows that when the model is 97.7% confident or more, its predictions are 100% precise. © 2024 IEEE

    This article examines the rise and fall of the department of economic history at Monash University, between 1967 and 1993, through the prism of the careers of academics John McCarty and Angus Sinclair.     Making teacher educators’ experiences visible: seeing inside the hopeful and ambiguous dimensions of practice

    The field of teacher education is subject to intense scrutiny and policy reform and within this context, the voices of those working within the field are often marginalised. Drawing on our larger study of teacher educators, we addressed the key research question: “How do those who work in the field of teacher education articulate and represent the nature of their work?.” Using a fusion of arts-based and data science research methods and the theory of practice architectures, we examined the ways that teacher educators’ work is mediated within cultural-discursive, material-economic, and social-political domains. We argue that while ambiguous dimensions exist in teacher educators’ practices, they remain hopeful about their work and find spaces to create alternative sayings, doings and relatings as they prepare teachers for the profession. We contend that using both text-based and visual images facilitates the generation of enhanced meanings to highlight the complexity of teacher educators’ work to those within and outside the profession. © 2024 The Author(s).     Discussion : a fuzzy classification process for swelling soils [Transp. Infrastruct. Geotechnol. 10(3), 474–487]

    This communication article presents a discussion of various fundamental points pertaining to the Toksöz Hozatlıoğlu and Yılmaz (2023) (the Authors) investigation [published in Transp. Infrastruct. Geotechnol. 10(3), 474–487], specifically scrutinizing the practical ramifications of employing the liquid limit (LL) parameter (by itself) to infer soil expansivity. Based on previous experimental investigations and their own independent analyses presented in this article, the Discussers demonstrate that without proper consideration of soil mineralogical activity, the sole reliance on the LL parameter (as adopted in the Authors’ investigation) is often not a reliable basis for performing soil expansivity assessments. Accordingly, the LL-based fuzzy classification approach reported by the Authors, despite addressing potential uncertainties arising from LL determinations by the Casagrande percussion-cup method, would, in itself, not lead to significantly more reliable soil expansivity assessments. As a way forward, a practical and more realistic classification framework for expansive soils based on equilibrium sediment volume measurements is presented and compared to the LL-based scheme adopted in the Authors’ investigation. Through this endeavor, it is demonstrated that the sole reliance on the LL parameter generally produces overly conservative soil expansivity rankings. © The Author(s) 2023

    Nurse-led clinics in primary health care : a scoping review of contemporary definitions, implementation enablers and barriers and their health impact

    Aims: To define nurse-led clinics in primary health care, identify barriers and enablers that influence their successful implementation, and understand what impact they have on patient and population health outcomes. Background: Nurse-led clinics definitions remain inconsistent. There is limited understanding regarding what enablers and barriers impact successful nurse-led clinic implementation and their impact on patient health care. Design: Scoping review using narrative synthesis. Methods: PubMed, MEDLINE, Web of Science, Scopus, CINAHL and PsycINFO were searched to identify nurse-led clinic definitions and models of care between 2000 and 2023. Screening and selection of studies were based on eligibility criteria and methodological quality assessment. Narrative synthesis enabled to communicate the phenomena of interest and follows the PRISMA for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) checklist. Results: Among the 36 identified studies, key principles of what constitutes nurse-led clinics were articulated providing a robust definition. Nurse-led clinics are, in most cases, commensurate with standard care, however, they provide more time with patients leading to greater satisfaction. Enablers highlight nurse-led clinic success is achieved through champions, partners, systems, and clear processes, while barriers encompass key risk points and sustainability considerations. Conclusion: The review highlights several fundamental elements are central to nurse-led clinic success and are highly recommended when developing interventional nurse-led strategies. Nurse-led clinics within primary health care seek to address health care through community driven, health professional and policy supported strategies. Overall, a robust and contemporary definition of nurse-led care and the clinics in which they operate is provided. Relevance to Clinical Practice: The comprehensive definition, clear mediators of success and the health impact of nurse-led clinics provide a clear framework to effectively build greater capacity among nursing services within primary health care.     “I just know if i keep going, I'll end up hating nursing.” lived experiences of emergency nurses three years into the global COVID-19 pandemic

    Introduction: As the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic continues globally, the personal and professional pressure on health care workers continues to accumulate. Literature suggests that as the pandemic evolves, nurses are experiencing increased levels of anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress, ultimately leading them to voice intentions to leave the profession, if they have not done so already. Methods: Informed by an interpretive hermeneutic phenomenological approach, this longitudinal study was designed to capture how the lived experiences of 9 emergency nurses evolved over the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, highlighting their feelings, attitudes, and perceptions toward working in the emergency department at this time in history. Interviews were undertaken in June 2022 and were analyzed using a thematic analysis approach. Results: Data analysis resulted in a total of 2 major themes and 8 minor themes. The 2 major themes included “exposed wounds” and “Band-Aid solutions.” Levels of burnout increased during the pandemic, with most of the emergency nurse participants dropping their hours, moving roles within the profession, or leaving the profession entirely. Findings elucidate where and how concerns may arise in clinical practice and holistic well-being among emergency nurses, particularly surrounding professional boundaries and protecting work-life balance and professional identity. Discussion: As the world moves to managing coronavirus disease 2019 as a recognized common respiratory illness, providing time and space for emergency nurses to voice their concerns, design their well-being interventions, set professional boundaries, and reconnect with their professional passion may see lower attrition rates and higher levels of professional satisfaction in emergency nurses globally. © 2024 Emergency Nurses Associatio

    Mis-expression of GATA6 re-programs cell fate during early hematopoiesis

    The traditional view of hematopoiesis is that myeloid cells derive from a common myeloid progenitor (CMP), whereas all lymphoid cell populations, including B, T, and natural killer (NK) cells and possibly plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDCs), arise from a common lymphoid progenitor (CLP). In Max41 transgenic mice, nearly all B cells seem to be diverted into the granulocyte lineage. Here, we show that these mice have an excess of myeloid progenitors, but their CLP compartment is ablated, and they have few pDCs. Nevertheless, T cell and NK cell development proceeds relatively normally.     Low-complexity and less-conservativeness ostrowski stability criterion for parallel fractional grid-connected converters under unbalanced grid

    Three-level T-type converter (3LT2C) with LCL filter have been widely used in renewable energy power generation system. Recent articles have shown that, due to the fractional characteristics of the inductance and capacitance of the LCL filter, the fractional-order model has higher accuracy than integer-order model in describing the static- and dynamic-behaviors of the physical LCL-3LT2C converter. To evaluate the stability of the grid-connected fractional LCL-3LT2C, fractional impedance model is often used. However, due to the fractional calculus, the overall order of the characteristic equation would increase, thus leading to high computation burden. Existing eigenvalues estimation method is not accurate enough for excessive estimation range. To solve these problems, a low-complexity and less-conservative stability criteria based on Ostrowski theorem is proposed, which determines the critical stability point according to the system loop gain matrix. First, the fractional sequence admittance models for a single and multiparallel F3LT2C are established under unbalanced grid. Second, the critical stability points of the system are determined by Ostrowski theorem. Simulation and experimental results verify the modeling accuracy of the proposed fractional model and the effectiveness of the proposed stability theorem in low-complexity and less-conservativeness. © 1986-2012 IEEE

    A comparative analysis of hybrid RF models for efficient lithology prediction in hard rock tunneling using TBM working parameters

    With the escalating demand for underground mining and infrastructure construction, the optimization of tunnel construction has emerged as a primary concern for researchers. The geological conditions encountered during the excavation of hard rock tunnels using tunnel boring machines (TBM) significantly impact construction efficiency and cost-effectiveness. The existing lithology testing methods need to be more efficient in aligning with TBM operational efficiency. In recent years, the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence has paved the way for its integration into numerous domains, including tunnel engineering. To address this issue, this study proposes three innovative hybrid RF-based intelligent models, namely PSO-RF, ALO-RF, and GWO-RF, for the precise prediction of lithology in hard rock tunnels using TBM working parameters. The TBM operating parameters of the Jilin Yinsong Water Supply Project serve as the basis for this investigation. Twelve distinct characteristic parameters relevant to the lithology of the tunnel working face were carefully selected as input parameters for lithology prediction. Comparative analysis of the three hybrid models reveals that GWO-RF demonstrates exceptional lithology prediction performance (ACC = 0.999924; PREA = 0.0.9999976; RECA = 0.999775; F1A = 0.999876; Kappa = 0.999911), whereas PSO-RF and ALO-RF exhibit slightly inferior performance. Nonetheless, all three hybrid models exhibit a significant improvement in prediction accuracy compared to the unoptimized RF model. The research findings presented herein facilitate the swift determination of TBM working surface lithology, enabling timely adjustment of TBM working parameters, reducing equipment wear and tear, and enhancing construction efficiency. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Institute of Geophysics of the Polish Academy of Sciences 2024

    Generalizing time aggregation to out-of-sample data using minimum bipartite graph matching for power systems studies

    This paper proposes a novel four-stage time aggregation method that can extract the underlying structure of years of historical renewable energy data. As opposed to the conventional time aggregation approaches, the proposed method starts with finding the best pair matches between patterns from one year to the next using Minimum Bipartite Graph Matching. The proposed method can capture the typical structure of patterns by taking into account the inter-annual relationships between observations collected from different years. The proposed method is evaluated by both data-based and model-based criteria. Regarding the former, we examine the quality of representative periods from different aspects such as the mean, standard deviation, maximum hourly ramp up/down, annual duration curve, and annual ramp duration curve. For the model-based evaluation, we consider a unit commitment problem in a modified IEEE 24-bus system consisting of an energy storage unit. We evaluate the methods in replicating the annual operational cost, wind energy curtailment, and energy throughput of energy storage. We evaluate the methods on three out-of-sample data sets to show the effectiveness of the proposed method in generalizing the clusters rather than over-fitting them to the in-sample observations. © 1969-2012 IEEE
