Youngest Trinity Graduate
Last week as I prepared to once again teach as adjunct faculty at the University of South Carolina School of Hospitality here in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina and my daughter was starting pre-school, I felt the need to wear my Grandmother’s college ring that she left me. Seventy years ago, my grandmother was the youngest graduate of her Trinity University class. Not only the youngest, she graduated in 3 years and while working. Born in Uvalde with a schoolteacher mother and father who was a police chief killed in the line of duty, moving away to go to college in the big city of San Antonio will always be to me what I consider an incredible feat. She became a Trinity University graduate in 1949 who went on to be a strong Texas business woman as Treasurer of Atlas Floors - a third generation San Antonio company that she founded with my Grandfather William Mahone in 1948. [Her class ring is] a symbol of the pioneer my Grandmother was and the example she set to all her grandchildren. As of today, all five of us grandchildren have graduated from college (Billy & Michael Mahone, Baylor University; Matt McCarthy, Incarnate Word University and Katelyn McCarthy, Texas A&M University) and I know she would be proud. I am now a businesswoman in Marriott Vacations Worldwide – following in her amazing footsteps. I hope my daughter will truly understand someday what it is to be a pioneer and maybe she will be fortunate to attend Trinity University as well. All the very best to all the students past, present and future that will be pioneers in the their own way. Your University will always have a special place in our family’s heart
