FDA Approves Lecanemab-irmb Maintenance Dosing for Early Alzheimer’s Disease Treatment
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most prevalent neurodegenerative disorder and is associated with progressive and irreversible cognitive decline that begins with memory lapses leading to physical and functional impairment. The conventional therapies that have been used for the treatment from Alzheimer\u27s Disease include acetylcholinesterase inhibitors and memantine, but additional therapy options are being developed. Lecanemab, brand name Lequembi, is currently a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved humanized monoclonal antibody for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease and indicated for mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or mild dementia. While there is impactful aid for treatment, lecanemab has three significant adverse reactions, which are amyloid-related imaging abnormalities (ARIA), hypersensitivity reactions, and infusion-related reactions, which should be tested for and avoided if possible. The safety profile of lecanemab in clinical trials shows that it is well-tolerated at the highest dose in the general population, with ARIA-E incidence \u3c10% and 14.3% for ApoE4-positive participants. Most ARIA-E occurred during the first three months of treatment and are resolved within one to three months. Pharmacists play a critical role in improving early detection of Alzheimer’s disease, supporting treatment access and counseling patients and caregivers on the appropriate use of lecanemab. Their involvement helps ensure safe and effective use of this disease-modifying therapy through adherence support, adverse effect monitoring and education on evolving administration options
Modulating Myeloid Gene Expression with a Novel Inhibitor of SPI1 and C/EBPβ Interaction
Due to an increased production of TNFα, IL 6, and IL-1β by Tumor Associated Macrophages, patients suffering from inflammatory bowel disease have an increased risk for tumorigenesis. Pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as IL-1β, promote chronic inflammation and cancer in diseases like hepatocellular carcinoma and lung cancer. The targeting of IL-1β has led to different therapeutic approaches, including protein neutralization and the inhibition of receptor binding. On the other hand, directly inhibiting gene transcription allows for higher effectiveness and specificity. Recent research revealed possible targets for low molecular weight inhibitors, specifically targeting protein-protein interactions that involve transcription factors, which provides a new approach for anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer treatments. Pharmacophore modeling using MAESTRO followed by docking of selected hits using VINA has revealed potential low-molecular weight inhibitors targeting an interaction between the C-terminal tail of the C/EBPβ dimer and a pocket of the DBD of SPI11/PU.1. Selected hits were tested in two types of myeloid leukemia cell lines. Results from our gene expression quantification via qRTPCR, chromatin immunoprecipitation co-occupancy studies, and co-immunoprecipitation followed by western blotting indicate that our inhibitor decreases IL1B/Il1b gene expression in LPS + inhibitor treated myeloid cells relative to controls and decreases Spi1:C/EBPβ interaction at the IL1B/Il1b promoter. Suggesting effectiveness of this SPI1:C/EBPβ inhibitor
Combined Medication and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Symptom Management in Bipolar Adults.
Problem:
The rates of recurrences and stabilizing symptoms in patients with bipolar disorder are concerning. Medication is often the first line of therapy to treat symptoms of bipolar disorders. However, medication therapy alone does not help manage bipolar symptoms, nor does it prevent relapse of symptoms at an effective rate.
Purpose:
The purpose of this study is to determine if cognitive behavior therapy in conjunction with medications improves symptom management in patients with bipolar disorders compared to medications alone.
Methods and Evaluation:
Patients receiving medication therapy for their bipolar disorder will be screened using a questionnaire after receiving CBT. This questionnaire would be used after each weekly session for one month. There would then be a one-month and a six-month follow-up with the same questionnaire. Before beginning CBT, the participants would answer the questionnaire to create a baseline. To have an accurate comparison, the results after extended CBT therapy would then be compared to this baseline.
Conclusion:
The results of the study would add to the search for effective bipolar symptom management. Effective symptom management would lessen frequent hospital and facility visits, thus decreasing stress on hospital and facility staff. The results would also provide nurses with reliable bipolar symptom management. Nurses will be able to provide the best care possible for patients with bipolar disorders
Embedded Web Application
Due to their interactive and user-friendly interface, jupyter notebooks have become a cornerstone tool for scientists, particularly those without a computer science background. This project explores the feasibility of integrating the pymoo dashboard into Jupyter notebooks, enhancing the accessibility and usability of optimization tools for a broader audience. Key research questions guiding this investigation include: the possibility of embedding websites directly into Jupyter notebooks without the need for an external web browser, the impact on user experience when running the pymoo dashboard within a Jupyter environment, and the potential for creating a dual-mode functionality that allows the pymoo dashboard to operate seamlessly in both web-browser and Jupyter notebook modes. By addressing these questions, this research seeks to bridge the gap between advanced optimization tools and their practical application in scientific research, ultimately fostering a more inclusive and efficient computational environment
Human Trafficking in Ohio and Arizona: A Comparative Study
The current study examined the differences of human sex trafficking cases in the states of Ohio and Arizona. The foundation of the differences between these two states in terms of the frequency of human trafficking in these states were analyzed. Arizona reportedly has a higher human sex trafficking rate than Ohio per capita. One of the proposed reasons is due to the close proximity of the Mexico-US border in Arizona. The data from this research can be used to further understand the challenges that different states face with human sex trafficking. Awareness of the frequency and challenges these states face allow for policymakers to integrate policies for prevention and awareness; this also includes the addition of more resources for victims
A Review on Involuntary Autobiographical Information in Clinical Disorders
Involuntary autobiographical memories are defined as unbidden memories of personal events that occur without prior attempts of retrieval. Subsets of these memories can be seen in several clinical disorders such as PTSD, psychosis, and depression. For example, intrusive memories, unbidden memories of past events, are often seen as a cardinal symptom of PTSD. Increasingly, research has examined clinical and subclinical populations in order to understand the formation and integration of involuntary autobiographical memories. This includes looking at these memories across clinical diagnoses and in specific disorders. This review will lay out the current understanding of these memories\u27 formation, manifestation, and correlations. This will be done in individual clinical diagnoses and comparisons. Furthermore, gaps in the literature will be highlighted and explored
Designing a Pamphlet on Green Catalysis
Polymers have become an integral part of everyday life; they are present in clothes, furniture, cars, electronics, and so much more. However, their synthesis often involves harmful materials such as transition metal catalysts. Transition metal catalysis is the industry standard for efficient polymer synthesis, but the use of these chemicals often requires harsh conditions and materials that can be harmful to the environment and human health. To alleviate this problem, multiple innovations have been made to adjust the process of transition metal catalysis with the goal of incorporating these changes on an industrial level. Additionally, advancements in bioengineering allow for biocompatible enzyme complexes to be synthesized and used as a green alternative to traditional catalysts. However, biocatalysis is still an emerging field, and developing these catalysts has many pitfalls including the amount of time and money it requires to develop a catalyst specific to a single reaction. The future of biocatalysis relies on streamlining the development process to address industrial goals. To deliver information about the pros and cons of different catalysis methods, it is important to understand science communication principles and how to develop effective communication materials. The basic principles of pamphlet design and science communication can then be applied to create an easily accessible educational resource about a hot topic within the science community and share it with the general public
Patient Satisfaction and Nutrition Understanding
Problem: Patients in the hospital are given a standardized menus with food options that may not promote optimal health and healing. Many hospitalized patients are on specific diets related to their medical conditions. When patients on these specific diets try to order meals outside the bounds of their dietary guidelines, they are told “no” without being told why or what they can have.
Aim: The aim of this study is to measure patient satisfaction regarding their meals when they receive a general menu as compared to patients who are given specific menus and nutrition education catered to their medical problems.
Methods: This will be a quasi-experimental single blind design. Patients will be randomly assigned into the control group (patients given the general menu) and the intervention group (patients given a menu related to their specific medical condition and nutritional support). At the end of their hospital stay, all patients will complete a survey measuring satisfaction and nutritional knowledge.
Conclusion: It is expected that patients who had the menus related to their specific medical condition will have higher satisfaction with their meals. Additionally, because of the intervention group received additional nutritional support, they will have a greater understanding of their nutritional needs. This will lead to increased patient compliance with these diets and improved health outcomes
An Additional Size Variant for a Custom-Molded Shoulder Spacer Design
In my capstone project, our team was tasked with designing a bone cement shoulder spacer and a mold system to produce the spacer. Based on discussion with the client company, Stryker, multiple diameters of spacers exist on the market, though our capstone design is limited to a 9mm diameter variant. For my enhancement, I performed calculations detailing the viability of extending our design to additionally include a variant with a 7mm diameter shaft
