    Lucas vs Manual Compressions in Critical Care

    Abstract Problem: CPR is very demanding and requires a large number of staff to attempt return of spontaneous circulation. Hospitals are short staffed and there are often not enough providers to adequately staff cardiac arrest situations. LUCAS mechanical compression devices were meant to combat these staffing issues. Introducing LUCAS devices to critical care settings may help combat staffing shortages and increase survival rates following cardiac arrest. Aim: The purpose of this project is to determine if using the LUCAS mechanical compression device in critical care settings experiencing limited staff would increase patient outcomes compared to manual CPR within 30 days. Methods: This project will be a retrospective, chart review. Initial return of circulation and 30-day survival rates of patients’ experiencing cardiac arrest in the Cardiovascular ICU who had manual compressions would be compared to those who had LUCAS device compressions. Conclusion: Most of the studies performed previously were conducted in ambulances and emergency room settings. There is not enough evidence in critical care settings and more research is needed. The use of LUCAS devices in critical care units could be one method to combat staffing shortages during CPR and improve patient outcomes

    A Novel Stream Encryption Algorithm

    In this work, a novel stream encryption technique is suggested. The encryption technique is intended to encrypt images in real-time. The paper describes the novel technique at a high level, then it shows details about its hardware implementation. Multiple tests are performed to show the strength of the technique including: key space and sensitivity, statistical analysis of encrypted images such as entropy and histogram, and correlation between the pixels of the encrypted image. All these tests show that the novel technique is at the same level of RC4 the current industry standard of stream encryption. The novel technique also offers a very interesting characteristic that makes it very strong against plain-text attacks. Using the same password and original message but encrypting at different times will generate two completely different ciphered messages, and both ciphered messages will be decrypted correctly to generate the original message. Such property is similar to what tweakable ciphers offer in block cipher techniques but is not available in any steam encryption technique that we are aware of including the industry standard

    Oakwoods Nature Preserve: understanding biodiversity in a restored wetland ecosystem

    The drainage of thousands of acres of Ohio wetlands for farmland during the 19th and 20th centuries is being slowly reversed via restoration efforts as the importance of wetland ecological services becomes more evident. However, construction of wetlands is often lacking the use of best practices and standardization of post-construction surveys necessary for assessing the success of the restoration effort. We designed and implemented a standardized biodiversity survey examining communities of benthic bacteria, periphyton, macroalgae, and macroinvertebrates across forty-three wetland pools one year post construction at Oakwoods Nature Preserve in Hancock Co. Ohio. We utilized MiSeq sequencing of benthic bacteria and performed light microscopy sorting and identification of the algae and macroinvertabrates. Statistical assessment is currently underway. We will use multivariate analyses to assess how factors such as pool depth, hydroperiod, physical chemistry, and distance to biological source populations influences pool biodiversity. Improving our understanding of the influence these parameters have on constructed wetland biodiversity over time will provide best practice methodologies for the continued success of wetland restoration efforts across the state

    Diminishing the Doubts: A Mental Health Education Initiative

    According to the Surgeon General, it was estimated in 2018 that 19% of highschool girls and 23% of highschool boys are current e-cigarette users. The surge in youth e-cigarette use is a concerning epidemic. There is a need for highschool-aged students to be educated about the dangers of vaping and how it can affect their mental health. By understanding the signs of poor mental health and addiction, individuals can better seek assistance for themselves or those around them. The purpose of this study is to survey 9-12th graders’ knowledge about vaping related to mental health before and after the introduction of an Online Mental Health Resource Archive (OMHRA), which is filled with infographics, podcasts, hotlines, etc. The hypothesis is that participants will be inspired to educate themselves on their own time with the resources given. The evaluation of participants’ knowledge is to assist the school administrators to improve mental health education within the school system and provide them with aggregate data. Participants were first given a 19 question pre-survey assessing their current knowledge about vaping. A few months later, a post-survey will be given with the same 19 questions, plus additional opinion-based questions regarding the educational approach. All students will have access to the OMHRA regardless of survey participation, but only those who consented will be included in the data for analysis. Hard copy papers will be coded into an electronic spreadsheet and all data will be de-identified for analysis. Data collection and results are still in progress.     Tragedy is an unfortunate inevitability in life. We do not know when, where, why, or how it will happen, only that accidents happen. One moment can change a person’s life, and some moments can change the lives of whole communities, states, and nations. This was the case for the people of East Palestine, Ohio due to a catastrophic train derailment. Emergencies are emotional, chaotic, and traumatizing. They result from situations that are difficult to understand in their immediacy. Government action requires a rapid response to issues that require critical thinking and careful planning. The current polarized political environment mixed with rampant misinformation makes responding to tragedies that much more difficult

    The Rise of Virtual Nursing

    The Rise of Virtual Nursing Problem: There is an increased demand for nursing professionals in hospitals and other healthcare facilities. Increased workload and high demand can lead to nursing burnout. To decrease the nursing workload of bedside nurses and nurse burnout, non-bedside nursing staff need to be part of the care team. Non-bedside, virtual nursing is a new method to reduce primary nurse workload. Virtual nurses assist the bedside nurse by participating in the patient admission and discharge process, performing hourly rounding, and completing care plans and patient education. Purpose: The purpose of this research is to compare nurse satisfaction prior to and following implementation of virtual nursing. Methods: This longitudinal descriptive quantitative study will measure nurse satisfaction and burnout prior to and 3 months following the implementation of virtual nursing on an ICU step-down unit. The impact of virtual nurse implementation, nurse satisfaction, and burnout will be measured using a 3-part survey. Conclusion: It is expected that bedside nurses will have increased satisfaction following the implementation of virtual nursing care. With the help of new technologies, virtual nursing can improve bedside nurses\u27 work environment and patient care.     Low Power Consumption TDMA Algorithm for Energy Harvesting Wireless Sensor Networks

    Energy harvesting has been recently proposed for wireless sensor networks to improve their energy efficiency and drastically reduce the maintenance costs of replacing batteries. However, energy harvesting is a stochastic process that imposes an energy availability constraint on the system design. Thus, traditional protocols and algorithms, including synchronization, communication, scheduling, and networking, will not be suitable for energy-harvesting wireless networks. Therefore, we propose a novel Time Division Multiplexing Algorithm for a single-hop energy-harvesting wireless sensor network. The algorithm synchronizes the nodes based on less frequent synchronization messages from the coordinator node. The algorithm is implemented on a network of four nodes—three nodes are senders while one node is a coordinator. Initial results show that the proposed algorithm reduces power consumption and improves message latency compared to the state-of-the-art

    Assistant Directing the Musical Theatre Class of 2023 Senior Showcase

    Following graduation, Ohio Northern University\u27s Musical Theatre Class of 2023 will be launching careers in the performing arts on all corners of the country. To aid in offering each student a strong start in the industry beyond college, a Senior Showcase is currently being planned so that the students have an opportunity to connect and network with industry professionals, including casting directors and talent agents. The group has plans to perform for an audience in New York City, accompanied by an on-campus performance in Ada and a digital version of the showcase so that a wider audience may be reached. For my Honors Capstone Enhancement, I have taken on the role of Assistant Director to my advisor, in addition to my existing responsibilities as one of eleven performers in the Showcase. While there is still work to be done before our performance dates at the time of this presentation, I have continuously compiled research from a variety of sources such as director\u27s notes, performance materials and recordings, and critical documents including sheet music as well as resumes with accompanying headshots for each student. Through this process, I have gained an appreciation for the amount of effort required to market oneself in the performing arts industry, and I am hopeful that my work allows others to appreciate the diligence required to pursue jobs in this field

    The Impact of Short-term Exercise on Vital Capacity Between Female ONU Soccer Players and Non-athletes

    Previous studies have demonstrated that athletes participating in football, swimming, basketball, and soccer have a significantly higher vital capacity than non-athletes because of their increased lung function due to long term activity in their sport (Saputri et al., 2018). This IRB approved study aimed to demonstrate the difference in vital capacity (VC) between soccer players and non-athletes while comparing their percent change in vital capacity before and after short-term exercise. In this study, 15 female soccer players and 15 female non-athletes aged 18-22 attending Ohio Northern University (ONU) were gathered. The vital capacities (L) of each group were measured before and after exercising on a treadmill at 6 mph for 4 minutes, using a Baseline 12-1710 Windmill Type spirometer. On average, athletes were found to have a smaller percent change in vital capacity (-6.18%) from before to after exercise, compared to non-athletes who had a larger percent change (-8.96%); these percent changes were not significantly different between the two groups (N=30, α=0.05, p=0.675). Although on average there was a decrease in mean vital capacity after exercise among all subjects, exercise did not have a significant difference on vital capacity (N=30, α=0.05, p=0.196). A general trend, however, was seen that soccer players had a lower percent change in vital capacity and when comparing all of the subjects, they displayed a decrease in vital capacity after participating in short term exercise. This may suggest that although short term exercise decreases the maximum amount of air one is able to exhale after maximally inhaling (VC), the participation in sports and regular exercise reduces the amount that the VC decreases
