    Prevention of Wrong Site Surgery Errors in the Operating Room

    Abstract Problem The clinical problem at focus is wrong site surgeries and surgical errors in the operating room. This topic is a problem because wrong site surgeries could be devastating and life threatening for patients if mistakes are made. Purpose The purpose of this project is to address the occurrence of wrong site surgeries, the circumstances under which they occur, and compare whether time-out procedures versus preoperative site marking are more effective in preventing wrong site surgeries. Methods The design of the project is primarily a retrospective descriptive design. Participants in the project will include patients that have undergone an inpatient surgery within a specific year’s time in an operating room in a local hospital in Northeast Ohio. Evaluation Data will be obtained through chart review to assess the rate and incidence at which wrong site surgeries and surgical errors occur, the details of what surgery was performed, whether a surgical error occurred, if a time-out procedure occurred before, during, or after the procedure, if appropriate preoperative site marking occurred before the procedure, and if the surgical error specifically resulted in a wrong site surgery. Conclusion Wrong site surgeries and surgical errors can be reduced by using standardized protocol including time-out procedures and preoperative site marking. The findings from this project can be used to improve methods to reduce errors

    Americans have had over two decades to reflect back on how the September 11th attacks shook our nation to its core. The psychological damage done to the American public had a drastic effect on attitudes toward responding to the threat of international terrorists targeting the United States and the potential for internal threats within their own communities. Being members of Gen Z, many of our generation only know the events of 9/11 and its aftermath in retrospect. With this in mind, we examined policies enacted under the Bush administration and their significance in response to 9/11, how they affected American society throughout the 2000s, and how they affect our lives today

    FDA Submission for a Humeral Head Cutting Guide

    This Honors capstone enhancement project provides a model of required documentation for a 510k submission to the FDA to gain approval for a new medical device to be put on the market. This medical device is a humeral head cutting guide device to aid in shoulder replacement surgery. The cutting guide aims to facilitate the removal of the head of the humerus bone during surgery by providing a patient-specific solution that increases precision of the cut and accommodates surgeon preferences, therefore reducing the risk of patient complications.     Creation of a Take-Home-Naloxone Program in Rural Northwest Ohio

    Background: According to Ohio’s State Health Assessment, the rate of unintentional drug overdoses in 2020 was 45.6 compared to 25.8 nationally. As a direct result, Ohio has implemented more harm reduction strategies. Project DAWN, an Ohio Department of Health (ODH) subgroup, supplies free naloxone to agencies across Ohio. ONU Healthwise is one of two agencies in Hardin County distributing naloxone to the community. Description of Service: Help Save a Life with Naloxone, an ONU Healthwise group, provides free harm reduction supplies to the community. Kits come with two doses of naloxone, either 4 or 8 mg, five fentanyl test strips, a Deterra drug disposal bag, information about addiction, other services within the residents home county & a Project DAWN quick reference guide. Before distribution, patients receive basic naloxone training in order to be able to properly use the naloxone. Program Assessment: Patients complete an intake form that contains basic demographic information and number/type of kit dispensed. To determine impact, the number of kits dispensed and all basic demographics are evaluated. Outcomes: Since September 2022, the program has distributed 136 naloxone kits to 86 community members, trained 47 student pharmacists/pharmacists & had four known reversals with the utilization of naloxone. Goals of this program for 2023 include implementation of NaloxBoxes and/or vending machines to make the naloxone accessible at all times. Help Save a Life with Naloxone is working to reduce overdose deaths and the stigma around addiction once event at a time

    Stryker Cutting Guide FDA Approval

    Medical devices require sufficient testing and documentation to receive US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval that they are safe and effective for patients to use. Lower risk medical devices can apply for a premarket notification to prove that the product is similar to existing devices by filling out a Summary of Safety and Effectiveness Data (SSED). Once the SSED is approved, the medical device can be accelerated through the FDA approval process and reach the public sooner. For my capstone group’s designed surgical cutting guide I have written a SSED. I have focused on the potential risks of using the device, creating a testing procedure similar to the FDA’s, and reporting results of testing. If Stryker decides to produce our guide, these documentations will be required in the next steps of FDA approval and bringing the medical device to market

    Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome: A Quasi-Experimental Study of the Effectiveness of Family-Centered Care

    Problem: Neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) is the withdrawal process that occurs when an infant who was exposed to opioids in-utero is born. Despite the prevalence of NAS, there is a lack of research on the effectiveness of nonpharmacologic interventions in caring for infants with NAS compared to pharmacologic treatment. Purpose: The purpose of this project is to determine if nonpharmacological interventions are better at managing NAS symptoms leading to earlier discharge. Methods: A quasi-experimental design will be used for this study. A bundle, including rooming-in, breastfeeding, skin-to-skin, swaddling, and small, frequent feedings, will be implemented. All patients diagnosed with NAS in a hospital system, regardless of admission to NICU or general floor will be included. NAS symptoms and length of stay will be compared for infants whose parents/caregivers use the NAS bundle to those who do not. NAS symptoms will be measured using the FNASS. Conclusion: Based on the results of both groups, the conclusion will be made whether the bundle intervention is an effective treatment for NAS. Few studies have been conducted to determine effectiveness of nonpharmacologic treatment of NAS. Therefore, this study will contribute to identifying potential interventions to decrease NAS symptoms

    The Use of Isotopically Labeled Standards in a Multipoint Internal Calibration (MPIC) for the Quantification of Amphetamine and Methamphetamine in Biological Specimens by LC-MS

    Heavier isotopes contain atoms with greater numbers of neutrons such as deuterium (²H or D) or carbon 13 (¹³C), both of which are naturally occurring. Currently, drugs labeled with such isotopes, known as isotopologues, are used as internal standards in toxicological quantification methods, but there is potential to use them as internal calibrators. In a traditional procedure, the area ratio of amphetamine or methamphetamine - at increasing concentrations - to its internal standard - a deuterated isotopologue at constant concentration - is used to construct a calibration curve that is in turn utilized in the quantification of the respective drug in unknown specimens. Using an LC-MS, quantification of a drug is made possible through the comparison of the areas associated with the undeuterated [M+H]⁺ peak, X , in comparison to that of its isotopologues whose [M+H]⁺ peaks are greater corresponding to their number of deuterium atoms, X+D where D is the number of deuterium atoms. All isotopologues would be able to be differentiated through their mass dependent [M+H]⁺ peaks. Thus, spiking different isotopically labeled standards in the same sample at different concentrations (i.e., D₈ at 10 ng/mL, D₆ at 100 ng/mL, D₁₁ at 500 ng/mL, and D₅ at 1000 ng/mL) will provide internal calibrators in a method called Multipoint Internal Calibration (MPIC).     Passive uptake into algal colonies can exercise significant control over primary production. Passive diffusion can bring secondary metabolites into the cell or allow wastes to be expelled. While passive diffusion of compounds across the membrane of single celled organisms has become a well-defined process, uptake across a colonial membrane is still poorly understood. Passive diffusion across cell lipid bilayers depends strongly on both polarity and molecular size. However, polarity is not suspected to have a role in diffusion across the colonial envelope. This study examined passive diffusion in a colonial alga, Phaeocystis globosa, using NMR spectroscopy. The rate of exchange between the colonial matrix and the bulk media was measured for N compounds and the physical properties of each used to determine underlying factors that influence diffusion

    Flu Vaccine Hesitancy and Accessibility on the ONU Campus

    I collected data from students and faculty at Ohio Northern about their ability to receive their flu vaccine on campus. Along with that, collecting opinions on why people did not receive their vaccine and addressing those issues. My goal is to use this information to help improve the vaccine clinics on campus so that more students and faculty can receive their vaccine. This includes making the clinics more accessible or at a more convenient time. This could also include raffles for clinics to improve attendance and the overall vaccination status of the universit
