Manufacturing Report for a Concrete Canoe
An extension for the concrete canoe to create a production proposal for the competition. The elements of the capstone enhancement are as follows: defining the value of the project, defining the innovation, determining ways that the product can be sustainable and outlining the manufacturing process and cost. Value can be defined per Merriam-Webster as “the monetary worth of something.” By the same source, it can also be described as “relative worth, utility, or importance. These definitions will be used in how I define value. Sustainability will be defined using the three pillars of sustainability – social, economic, and environmental impacts. Improvements for the project compared to past years will be established throughout any project process, a team learns best practices to improve the prototype, process, or procedure. Manufacturing Cost Estimate will be based on the cost of mass-producing 100 canoes. After the estimate is determined a one page fee schedule will be prepared. Hourly rates and multipliers will be determined based on the ASCE 2024 Concrete Canoe Request for proposal. Since we are preparing two canoes this year, these documents will need to be created for both of them. The production proposal and manufacturing fee will be combined with the construction drawings from the hull design officer before being submitted to the Concrete Canoe Competition Committee. After the conference documents are completed, a presentation will be created to show how the report was developed and how it influenced the overall project
Examination of School Vision Screening Programs near ONU
School vision screenings play a vital role in identifying potential eye issues early on, and ensuring that children receive necessary support for optimal learning and development. My project focuses on evaluating the effectiveness of vision screening programs within school districts surrounding Ohio Northern University and proposing possible improvements. Through outreach to school districts, current screening practices, including frequency, methods, and referral procedures were investigated and compared to established literature and state policies. Additionally, educational materials for teachers and parents were created to outline the significance of vision screenings and identify signs of visual impairment in children
Improving Ohio Northern’s Dining Hall Communications - Ella Pike
The Everyday app isn’t regularly updated with new information, and there is no good place for students to check before they swipe into the dining hall. I am conducting marketing research, including a questionnaire to gain insight into what ONU students will respond to, all providing how we can improve the digital dining experience so students can have a better sense of what will be at Mac for that given day. My solution is to design a dining section on the ONU app, which most students use, over using Everyday, which students don’t seem to use, which is easily accessible and provides an updated daily menu, showing the allergens and nutritional information for each food product. In addition, and in addition to my questionnaire, I will also be conducting psychographical research on the individuals who answered the survey, and how that affects my results. I will also conduct ethnographic research, by watching how ONU students interact with the mobile application in correlation to the dining experience at Ohio Northern. The research can be applied to implementing features in the app that the students at ONU would benefit from
Demographic Disparities in Cancer Awareness Among College-Aged People
According to the American Cancer Society, roughly two million people in the US were diagnosed with cancer in 2023, making it the leading cause of death amongst people under 85. Research has proven that early detection and preventative medicine, such as mammograms, colonoscopies, skin scope exams, and pap tests, are the most effective way to decrease mortality related to cancer. However, recent studies have shown that Americans are unaware of when or how frequently to screen for cancer, or how certain screenings relate to cancer at all. The purpose of this study is to 1) gauge the overall awareness of cancer, its prevention, and early detection strategies the ONU student body is and 2) to determine whether certain demographic differences exist amongst ONU students that cause discrepancies in cancer awareness. This study was conducted through an online survey emailed to the student body and was IRB approved by the institution. The students were surveyed from February 23 through March 8, 2024 using questions similar to Cancer Research UK’s Cancer Awareness Measure (CAM). Demographic data related to age, gender, race, ethnicity, region of origin, and the college the student belongs to were collected; the student was then asked 13 questions about their knowledge of cancer’s signs and symptoms and how common it is in different groups. Effects of Auditory and Visual Stimulation on Acute Stress Response
Hospital settings evoke stressful responses; however, exposure to forest imagery or classical music has decreased stress response. Thus, this study investigated the acute effects of auditory and visual stimulation on heart rate (HR), blood pressure and brain activity in a simulated hospital setting. With IRB approval, 10 college-aged students (18-22 yrs) were presented with 6 sensory stimuli over a 7-minute period, in this order: stressful visual, stressful audio, a combination of stressful visual and audio, calming visual, calming audio, and a combination of calming visual and audio while EKG (mV) and EEG (uV and Hz) were simultaneously recorded and blood pressure (mm Hg) was measured. All cardiovascular parameters (HR in bpm, MAP [mean arterial pressure], SP [systolic pressure], and DP [diastolic pressure]) and brain activity (alpha and beta waves) were measured in triplicate per subject and expressed as % change compared to resting conditions. Based on this study, % change in all cardiovascular responses to the six sensory stimuli regardless of gender or by either (except for HR, N=5), were not significantly different. Interestingly, mean % change in HR in response to either stressful audio (p=0.016) or combined stressful audio and visual (p= 0.013) was higher in females than in males. The response to either calming audio (p=0.01) or combined calming audio and visual stimulation (p=0.002) was also lower in males than in females. A significant EEG impact was observed only with alpha wave frequency in that females had a higher % increase than in males
How We Got to Where We Are and Where We Are Going Through Hegel\u27s Dialectic
The United States has gone through historical events that have shaped the course of the nation. These events are best analyzed through the Dialectic. Specifically, Hegel\u27s form of the Dialectic. As opposed to other forms of analyzing history, the dialectic has provided a very influential and analytical way to view history. Philosophers such as Socrates and Kant used it as a tool to analyze what themes in history led to changes in history, Kant used it as a tool to use events of the past to find trends that may be replicated in the future. Contemporaries of Hegel such as Marx used the dialectic to predict the conclusions of history, and even further, Fukuyama used the dialectic to declare the point in which major history concluded. I used the years of 1980 to 2024 to analyze the trends of historical events, the themes, practices, and philosophies in order to discern the necessary properties of compiling a dialectic that is able to be used to accurately describe the present. Contrary to other dialectical interpretations, history has grown beyond the conflict between communism and democracy, and it has grown past the class struggle that was deemed in other findings. In the modern era, the conflict within the United States is found between the need to better the nation as a whole, and the desire to better the wants of the few. The conflict arises through a nearly inversed Rawlsian position, those who do not have desire to have a lot in the future. Thus, they act in ways that is against their current interests and in the benefit of those who are in a minority. The result of this conflict is the creation of a populist political format where policy hardly matters but perception of strength and use of buzz words rule the day. The paper concludes in finding that Populist politics will continue in the United States so long as they are successful in a series of elections. Though populism may not always be a staple in American Democracy, it is very likely that populist politics will persist in the United States for years to come
Differential behavioral responses in male and female mice lacking either RGS2 or RGS4 proteins after acute administration of antidepressants and anxiolytics
The overall objective of the study was to assess the acute behavioral effects of currently used antidepressants and anxiolytics in male and female mice lacking regulator of G protein-signaling (RGS) proteins 2 and 4 and their wild-type counterparts. RGS 2 and 4 proteins negatively modulate signaling pathways of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), which play an important role in mediating the effects of monoamine neurotransmitters such as dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin. These neurotransmitters in turn play an important role in the action of antidepressant and anxiolytic medications. The study was undertaken because no studies till date have systematically assessed the behavioral effects of anxiolytics and antidepressants in both male and female mice lacking RGS2 and RGS4 proteins. Anxiety-like behaviors were assessed using the elevated plus maze (EPM) and antidepressant-like effects were assessed using the tail suspension test (TST). The anxiolytic and antidepressant drugs evaluated in this study include those that primarily target monoamine neurotransmission such as fluoxetine (30 mg/kg), desipramine (30 mg/kg), and buspirone (3 mg/kg). Data analyzed till date suggests that RGS2, but not RGS4, sex-dependently influences the antidepressant-like effect of desipramine and fluoxetine after acute administration. Moreover, the data suggests that RGS4, but not RGS2, sex-dependently influences the effects of buspirone and fluoxetine on anxiety-like behavior. Further doses of the above mentioned drugs are currently being evaluated. Data obtained from these studies will help in understanding the anxiolytic and antidepressant effects of drugs in humans carrying polymorphisms of the RGS2 and RGS4 genes.

Silver Is Not The New Gold Standard For Washing Wrestling Clothing
Silver nanoparticles were adhered to singlets and t-shirts by washing with SilverWorks!® to determine their efficacy in reducing wrestler exposure to contaminating microbes and minimize infection risk. Streptococcus pneumoniae was inoculated onto 5 cm squares of control and silver-treated cotton, polyester and lycra. Fabric was pressed onto blood agar plates which were then incubated overnight. There were no significant differences between bacterial load on silver treated and untreated fabrics (p=0.22). When silver-treated and control cotton squares were inoculated with a mixture of bacteria commonly found on mats, fewer bacteria survived on silver-washed samples, which was significant for Streptococcus pneumoniae (p=0.03) but not for Staphylococcus epidermidis (p=0.28), Staphylococcus aureus (p=0.27) or Bacillus subtilis (p=0.08). In practice, 32 grapplers from Ohio Northern University’s wrestling team paired off such that one wore a silver-treated cotton t-shirt, and their partner wore a control washed in detergent alone. Silver was effective in reducing bacterial contamination at low exposures (1 or 2 bouts; p = 0.03) but not high exposure (4 bouts; p=0.49). In a laboratory-based invitational simulation, Staphylococcus aureus was applied to lycra repeatedly over time and load monitored at regular intervals. Silver-treatment did not significantly reduce bacterial load (p= 0.27). It was concluded that fabric treatment with SilverWorks!® is ineffective at bacterial load reduction on fabric at the high levels encountered in the wrestling environment
