The Search for Common Ground: Analyzing Language Commonly Used For Individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

    Get PDF
Respect and acceptance of individuals within a society can start simply from the language used to refer to them, especially those with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). With debates of researchers and professors using either Identity-first language (IFL) or Person-first language (PFL) within their teachings and findings, no consistent standard for usage has emerged and not much has been said on what is generally being used. Using an exploratory survey, this research explores the language used on a college campus when referring to individuals with IDD. Variations of IFL, PFL, and Slang (or outdated language) were analyzed in terms of the communities’ preference and frequency of the terms being heard. Staff and faculty on campus, in addition to current students, were invited to participate in the survey and differences between the two groups were examined. Typically PFL and mixes of PFL and Slang were more highly ranked than IFL, IFL plus Slang, and Slang. When looking at how often terms were heard, students often heard more slang and slang mixes than staff and faculty. Additionally, comparisons in preferences between those who identified as being disabled and those who are not were made. While the campus had ranked and preferred PFL, participants who identified as having a disability showed no preference towards what language was used to refer to them and their disability

Misused and Misunderstood: Examining the Inappropriate Use of Stimulant Medications

    Get PDF
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder in children, characterized by inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) endorses stimulant medications as the first-line treatment option. When combined with behavioral therapy, this pharmacologic class can improve focus, executive functioning, and the overall quality of life. While stimulant prescriptions can have a positive effect when used as directed, there is concern for the potential of provider overprescription and patient misuse related to these medications. Consequently, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) revised the boxed warning and prescribing information for stimulant medications. Healthcare providers must educate patients and caregivers about appropriate medication use to prevent diversion and ensure safety

Automated Dispensing Cabinet Vs. Traditional Stock Storage System

    No full text
Problem - Medication errors are a significant concern in healthcare settings, contributing to adverse patient outcomes, increased healthcare costs, and compromised patient safety. Traditional manual medication dispensing systems are prone to human error, leading to incorrect dosages, wrong medications, or missed doses. In response, many hospitals have adopted automated dispensing cabinets (ADCs) which are designed to streamline the medication dispensing process, reduce human error, and enhance medication safety. However, the effectiveness of ADCs in reducing medication errors compared to traditional stock storage systems (TFSS) remains unclear. Aim - This study aims to address this gap by comparing medication error rates between hospitals using ADCs and those relying on TFSS, with the goal of evaluating whether the use of ADCs improves medication safety and reduces the frequency of errors in hospitalized patients. Methods - This project is a retrospective hospital data review with the use of mixed methods. This project involves a comparative analysis of two hospitals: one using ADCs across all floors and the other primarily utilizing TFSS. Hospital records from both institutions will be reviewed to identify medication error rates, and surveys will be distributed to nursing staff at each hospital. The surveys will assess nurses\u27 perceptions of ADCs in terms of medication pass efficiency, safety, and confidence, as well as their experiences with medication errors. Sophomore nursing students were also presented information related to ADCs in their Fundamentals class. Conclusion - The use of ADCs decreases the incidence of medication errors compared to TFSS. By improving the accuracy and speed of medication dispensing, ADCs contribute to enhanced patient safety and provide healthcare professionals with greater confidence in medication administration

Outreach Event Showcasing Scenic Design Process for International Play Festival

    No full text
As an enhancement to my capstone project as the Set Designer for the International Play Festival, I will complete an educational outreach project with Northville High School, where I first discovered my passion for scenic design and technology. Returning to the place where I made the decision to pursue theatre as a career allows me to give back to the program that helped shape my artistic journey while inspiring the next generation of theatre artists. This project aims to help these high school students explore potential next steps in their educational careers by showcasing my work from the International Play Festival and introducing them to the foundational concepts of scenic design while also exploring the unique challenges of designing contemporary plays with abstract concepts, analyzing how plays bring attention to social and political issues, learning about proper cultural research, and the collaborative aspects of the design process. During this event, I will also lead a hands on activity to provide them the opportunity to explore their own creative processes. I hope this project will inspire the students to see scenic design as an accessible, meaningful avenue to share their own perspectives and explore how theatre can reflect and respond to the world around them as they move forward in life. This project not only enhances my capstone by extending the International Play Festival’s themes into the community, but also allows me to give back to the program that first inspired my passion for theatre, fostering creativity and empowering young artists to see scenic design as a powerful form of storytelling

Using FEniCSx to solve partial differential equations with finite element method

    No full text
FEniCSx is an open-source collection of packages that are useful for solving partial differential equations (PDEs) with finite element method (FEM). This project explores the fundamentals of FEM and how they translate into FEniCSx code, with a focus on educating those without a strong FEM or computation background

Workshopping an Original Musical Theatre Book and Score

    No full text
Musical Theatre majors spend the majority of their time working on the performance of material, most of which has already been written and produced many times over. The focus of this Capstone is on the creation of Musical Theatre material. This includes two primary focuses: the book/script of the piece and the score/songs. Classmate Andrew Holdsworth (BFA Musical Theatre, BA Music) and I will be developing an original script and score of a full length musical. The project will be a finished first draft at the end of this academic semester. In line with professional practice, we will use the fellow theatre students in the department to begin to hear the material off the page. We will hold two table reads: the first will be only the actors and creative team. The second will have an invited audience, who will have an opportunity to give feedback to the creative team on the current state of the project. There will also be recordings made of the current songs to create a concept album of the piece. Most pieces of theatre have many phases with large changes to better clarify and improve towards the final product. This project allows us to have a full draft and live feedback to have direction on where to focus on improvements
