Alefanginas: El error gráfico como generador de variantes léxicas en los arabismos
Get PDFThe word alefangina is a pharmacological technical term stemming from mediaeval translations from Arabic into Latin, which fell afterwards into disuse. Since its introduction in Spanish and in other languages of Europe, an imprecise idea of its possible etymology was circulating among researchers. However, this idea should be considered merely a conjecture, as it did not conform to usual methods of analysis of phonological adaptation of lexical interferences between languages. Moreover, it is not possible to collate the Latin translation in which the term firstly appears -the so-called Antidotarium Mesuae- with the original text in Arabic, which has not been yet found nor accurately identified. In this article, we suggest that a graphical confusion is at the origin of the word. By means of comparing the alleged etymon with its correlate in another text translated into Latin, theCanon of Avicenna, we explain the kind of graphical confusion that resulted in the emergence of this particular form.La palabra alefangina es un tecnicismofarmacológico hoy en desuso procedente de las traducciones del árabeal latín. A pesar de que desde su introducción en español, así como enotras lenguas de Europa, siempre se había tenido una vaga idea de suposible etimología, esta no se había apartado del terreno de laconjetura al no responder a los habituales procedimientos de análisisde la adaptación fonológica de las interferencias léxicas entre laslenguas. Tampoco había sido posible el cotejo de la traducción latinadonde aparece por primera vez -el llamado AntidotariumMesuae- con el texto original en lengua árabe pues este no se hahallado ni está identificado con exactitud. Get PDFA Latin-Romance etymology is proposed for the three most widespread coordinating connectives of the Basque language, the conjunctive eta and the disjunctives edo and ala, which would have entered as loans at various stages in the long history of contact between Basque and Latin or, later, Romance. Both of the specific etymons proposed as a joint hypothesis that links and encompasses the three coordinators find the arguments required for their defence in linguistic theory.Se propone una etimología latino-románica para los tres nexos coordinantes más generales del euskera, el conjuntivo eta y los disyuntivos edo y ala, que habrían entrado como préstamos en diferentes momentos de la larga historia de contacto entre el euskera y el latín o posterior romance. Get PDFWithin Quevedo’s gallery of artistic poems, the mock-romance “Matraca de los paños y sedas” relates to the art of tapestry, according to various embodiments that are examined in this study: the interesting ekphrasis of the arazzi series on Carlos V’s undertaking in Tunis, woven by the Willem de Pannemaker workshop, giving rise to an acute reflection on the paragone between painting and tapestry, and finally it presents a brief Parnassus of painters that provides a glimpse of Quevedo’s pictorial canon.Dentro de la galería de poemas artísticos de Quevedo, el romance satírico-burlesco «Matraca de los paños y sedas» se relaciona con el arte de la tapicería, según varias modalidades que se examinan en el presente trabajo: la interesante écfrasis de la serie de arazzi sobre la empresa de Túnez de Carlos V tejida por el taller de Willem de Pannemaker, que da pie a una aguda reflexión sobre el paragone entre la pintura y la tapicería, y finalmente presenta un pequeño parnaso de pintores que permite entrever el canon pictórico quevediano

Get PDFThroughout its 300-year old history, the Real Academia Española has made crucial contributions to the Spanish language and Spanish culture. However, notwithstanding the work carried out by the institution, we must also give individual recognition for influential works of all orders to those persons who were academics during that time – including works which led to improvements in coexistence and guarantees of rights of the individual. This article narrates the great struggle for freedom in the face of State-sponsored repression which was arbitrary, disproportionate, unpredictable and cruel, and its reflection in the work of three notable academics of the RAE: Lardizábal, Jovellanos y Meléndez Valdés.La Real Academia Española ha hecho, a lo largo de sus trescientos años de historia, contribuciones decisivas a la lengua y la cultura españolas. Pero, sin perjuicio de ese trabajo institucional, cabe atribuir individualmente a las personas que fueron académicos durante ese tiempo, trabajos y obras influyentes en todos los órdenes, incluida la mejora de la convivencia y las garantías de los derechos individuales. Este artículo narra la magna lucha por la libertad frente a la represión de Estado arbitraria, desproporcionada, impredecible y cruel, y su reflejo en las obras de tres grandes académicos de la RAE: Lardizábal, Jovellanos y Meléndez Valdés
Análisis cuantitativo de las citas del Diccionario de Autoridades
Get PDFAlthough we are already quite familiar with the fundamental aspects of the origin and development of the Diccionario de Autoridades (DA), what is still lacking is a sufficiently detailed vision of its content and, more specifically, of the large quantity of works and authors cited as illustrative examples of the use of words and frequency of use of each one of them. There can clearly only be a complete analysis of these aspects if an electronic version of the text is to be made available - one which would at least allow for the automatic retrieval of the most general quantitative information. The present study seeks to bring this task to fruition and to provide the complete relationship between works and authors cited in the DA, along with their corresponding usage. For this purpose use is made of the electronic version of the DA, available to the public on the website of the Real Academia Española (http://web.frl.es/DA.html).Aunque conocemos ya bastante bien los aspectos fundamentales de la génesis y el desarrollo del llamado Diccionario de Autoridades (DA), carecemos todavía de una visión suficientemente detallada de su contenido y, más concretamente, de la gran cantidad de obras y autores citados como ejemplos ilustrativos del uso de las palabras y la frecuencia de cada uno de ellos. Evidentemente, el análisis completo de estos aspectos solo puede ser acometido si se dispone de una versión electrónica del texto que permita la recuperación automática de, al menos, los datos cuantitativos más generales. El presente trabajo pretende llevar a cabo esa tarea y proporcionar la relación completa de obras y autores citados en el DA, con sus frecuencias correspondientes, utilizando para ello la versión electrónica de la obra que la Real Academia Española ha puesto a disposición pública en su página (http://web.frl.es/DA.html)
