Get PDF
The objective of this paper is to analyze the evolution of the Latin adverb IBI > hi/ý within the Romance languages of the Iberian Peninsula. Its dialectal history was largely influenced by the manner in which its properties in Latin were articulated into each romance variety. Its nature fluctuated between pronominal and adverbial, and this made it experience different changes through space and time; and even if it had remarkable vitality in the Medieval Ages, it only survived in Catalan and Aragonese. The study seeks to determine the factors that led to its disappearance talking into account its properties, which interacted with the properties of the grammars of the iberian varieties within a hypothetical dialectal continuum.

In around 1449, when Santillana wrote the Proemio e carta, he branded Fernán Rodríguez Portocarrero as the great troubadour of the house of the Duke of Arjona. The cancionero sources do not preserve any poems in his name, but we must give credit to Don Iñigo and accept that he is an author whose output seems to have been completely lost, since there is other evidence supporting his judgement. Fernán Rodríguez would not therefore be a minor poet, although, to date, in addition to the fact that his work was lost, he was an obscure and almost forgotten figure.

This paper sets out the clear connections between Iréne Némirovsky\u27s novel and the story by Cristina Fernández Cubas, not just on the basis of the biblical story about the Phoenician princess, but also because of the conceivably independent use of Jean Racine\u27s tragedy Athalie. If the Spanish author chose the name Jezabel for a fantastical story, it was because she had read the scene in which the queen appears as a ghost before her daughter with the same appearance with which she had decided to die at the hands of her murderer. She ultimately blended the biblical story with another classic (the tale of Iphis and Anaxarete) with the same parodic sense as Enrique Jardiel Poncela\u27s comedy El cadáver del señor García.

Get PDF
This paper examines the textual and interpretative tradition of a passage in Don Quixote, with the aim of demonstrating that subsequent editions of the novel reproduced a typographical error from the first edition of 1605 (paso for pasto). To correct the error, this paper reviews the definitions of the term paso, pasar and pasto in the Diccionario de autoridades and other dictionaries, as well as the amendments and notes added by critical editors to the sentence under analysis, and several of the old translations of the novel. The proposed amendment is justified with parallel passages by Cervantes and other authors of the period, and with a brief review of other moments where Don Quixote defines the order of chivalry. Finally, the paper proposes that the sense of the term pasto as \u27food for humans\u27 should be included in the Academy\u27s Dictionary.

Get PDF
In contrast to Carlos Clavería’s explanation which suggests that the gypsyism menda (‘I’) derives from a Romani locative mande/mandi, this article proposes that menda goes back to a reinterpretation of the Romani form tumendar, an ablative of the second-person plural pronoun. Equally, an alternative form men would come from tumen, the accusative. The process of creating both forms would have begun from a reanalysis of tumen, tumenda(r) as tu menda, tu men (‘you’). This would have been followed by the analogical creation of su menda, su men and mi menda, mi men. This phase would be documented both by the presence of su men (‘you’, polite form) in the gypsy texts of the nineteenth century and by the use of mi menda, tu menda, su menda with the meanings ‘I’, ‘you’, ‘he’. Finally, from mi men, mi menda, usage would have changed to men, menda as the first person singular pronoun.

Literature is a form of expression whose temporal structure, both in content and style, provides a historial record of the evolution of culturae. In this work we try a shy and starting take on a quantitative analysis of a classic of its kind. The analysis of literatura typically involves the aggregation of information on several levels, ranging from words to sentences and even larger scale properties of temporal narratives such as structure, plot, and the use of irony and metaphor. By analizing the growth, change, and decline of published words over centuries, the mathematician argued, it should be posible to rigorously study the evolution of cultura on a grand scale. Analysis of the n-gram database can also reveal patterns that have escaped the attention of historians. This is a wake-up call to humanities that there is a new style of research that can comlement the traditional styles. The emerging field of culturomics seeks to explore broad cultural trends through the computerized analysis of vast digital book archives, offering novel insights into the functioning of human society.
