National assessment of student’s achievement clarifies that more than 70% of the students are below the level of competencies expected by the curriculum, and algebra is one of the weakest mathematical areas in public schools of Nepal. In this context, this research aim is to measure the improvement of problem-solving skills of Grade 8 students using model drawing for word problem solving in province 5 of Nepal. For this purpose, pre-test, intervention lesson, post-test and social validity survey for students were carried out. The lesson structure of Control Class (CC) was composed using traditional abstract algebraic method and for Experimental Class (EC) using Hogan & Forsten (2007)’s eight steps of model drawing approach. The quantitative data was analyzed using non-parametric test of SPSS. Result shows that the knowledge, comprehension, application and reasoning skills of EC became better than before, and consequently their problem-solving skills appeared more improved than that of CC after the treatment using model drawing approach of teaching.departmental bulletin pape

A Histrical Consideration of the Scientfic Essay in Japanese Textbooks used at Junior High School

    Get PDF
The purpose of this paper is to examine the content of the lerning about scientific essays in Japanese Textbooks used at Junior High School in postwar and how it led to the current lerning of expository texts. In this paper, I will focus on the works of Torahiko Terada, and examine the conditions of recording, characteristics of style, units, and instructional topics. Science essays present “scientific views and ideas” in a concrete manner. In learning dealing with scientific essays, in the Showa 20 s, they were treated as texts for learning about scientific views, and later as models for the thinking process. The scientific essay was also used as a model for presentation and composition. The style of the scientific essay has many similarities with the rhetoric of expository texts, and is connected to the way of expression in expository texts.departmental bulletin pape

The Potential of Online Value Judgment Learning in Specialized Subject Content ‘Primary Social Studies’: In a Case of the Fourth Grade Unit ‘Disposal of Waste’ in Primary School

    Get PDF
This research examines the feasibility of creating online value judgement learning opportunities in initial teacher training as a strategy for building the competencies of primary school teachers. Social studies is a subject that nurtures civic qualities through social awareness, and the ability to make value judgments is a part of this. However, the challenge is to ensure sufficient time to set up value-judging situations in the classroom. Therefore, this research states that value judgment time outside of regular class time, through a combination of face-to-face and online learning, can encourage learners to be involved in reflection. Challenges for the present research concern mitigating the influence of orientations by learners who are more active in speaking out, and examining the potential of online in the temporal as well as the spatial dimension.departmental bulletin pape

The Potential of Curriculum Management and Learning Assessment through “SCRUM”: A Case Study of a Problem-Solving Learning Program in Cooperation with external expert organizations in the subject “Public”

    Get PDF
This study examines the application of the “SCRUM” framework to curriculum management and learning assessment, utilizing a case study of a learning unit titled “Considering the Urban Development of Naruto City, Tokushima Prefecture: How to Make it a Place to Live 5 or 10 Years.” In this case study, SCRUM was implemented by identifying a shared problem, aligning the “needs and goals” of participating organizations, determining “what can be done,” and continuously revising and refining the plan. These principles guided the design, implementation, and iterative improvement. A key feature of this approach was the separation of internal school-based learning assessment from external evaluation. While maintaining the integrity of educational quality within the school, the students’ city planning proposals were assessed by an external organization. This enabled alignment between the expectations of stakeholders, such as Naruto City and the local tax accountants’ association, and the students. This teaching approach facilitated students’ direct engagement with real-world challenges, promoting deeper learning.departmental bulletin pape

Upward Reanalysis in Japanese: Syntactic Change of the Sentence-Final Particle Kke and Its Comparison with Ke in the Yamagata City Dialect of Japanese

    Get PDF
This paper investigates upward reanalysis in Japanese, focusing on the historical development of the sentencefinal particle kke, as exemplified in sentences like Kyoo-wa nan-yoobi dat-ta kke? ‘What day of the week was it today?’. I argue that kke emerged through upward reanalysis, following a change from ki-ari ‘come-exist’ to keri ‘PST’ and ultimately to kke (Koyanagi 2018). Three key stages are identified in this reanalysis: Stage I, where kiari is situated within VP; Stage II, where keri occupies the head of TP; and Stage III, where kke is generated in the head of CP, reflecting a gradual upward reanalysis from VP to CP. By conducting a detailed morphological and syntactic analysis, I demonstrate how this reanalysis reshaped the syntactic properties of kke in Japanese grammar. Furthermore, I explore the structural position of ke in the Yamagata City dialect of Japanese, a dialectal variant of kke (Shibuya 1999). In this dialect, the structural position of ke varies based on the type of predicate: in sentences with action or change verbs, ke is located in CP, whereas in stative predicate sentences, it is a past tense marker located in the head of TP. This distribution suggests that ke represents an intermediate stage between Stage II and Stage III in the syntactic change of kke. Overall, this study contributes to the fields of generative grammar, grammaticalization, dialectology, and descriptive Japanese grammar.departmental bulletin pape

Financial Education in High School Home Economics: Learning Content about Lifelong Management of Household Finances

    Get PDF
Financial education was included in the high school home economics curriculum guidelines issued in 2018. Since financial education covers a wide range of topics, it is necessary to clarify which objectives teachers should aim for and the type of financial education they should provide. In this study, learning content covered by financial education is summarized to clarify the type of financial education that should be provided in home economics. First, the points about financial education in the curriculum guidelines were summarized. Next, how home economics textbooks reflect the purpose of the curriculum guidelines was analyzed. The curriculum guidelines focus on the use and selection of financial instruments for lifelong financial planning and management of household finances. Textbooks show the characteristics of each type of financial instrument and discuss the necessity of asset building linked to a life plan. Based on the above summary, a list of 11 items of learning content that should be covered in home economics was compiled.departmental bulletin pape

Re-Examination of the Effectiveness and Applicability of a School-Based Universal Prevention Program in Enhancing Autonomous Self-Esteem Among Lower-Grade Elementary Students: A Comparative Study with Upper-Grade Elementary Students

    Get PDF
Several years ago, we developed a school-based universal prevention program aimed at enhancing autonomous self-esteem among upper-grade elementary students. Autonomous self-esteem, in contrast to heteronomous self-esteem, is considered healthy and adaptive. Subsequently, a similar program was created for lower-grade elementary students. While Yamasaki and Uchida (2023) confirmed the program's effectiveness and applicability for lower-grade students, the scales used to assess this effectiveness were not well-standardized. In Study 1 of the present research, we aimed to develop valid and reliable scales to assess autonomous self-esteem and school enjoyment for both lowerand upper-grade elementary students. Results demonstrated the successful development of measures for autonomous self-esteem and school enjoyment, evidenced by factorial validity, internal consistency, and test-retest reliability. The autonomous self-esteem scale included subscales for self-confidence, confidence in others, and intrinsic motivation, in addition to a total score, while the school enjoyment scale was unidimensional. In Study 2, we implemented the programs to enhance autonomous self-esteem and examined their effectiveness and applicability in 1st- and 5th-grade students using the s cales developed in Study 1. The program was administered in four 45-minute sessions, conducted once a week during regular classes. The findings indicated that the programs were applicable and effective for both lower- and upper-grade students. These studies clarified that the programs can be applied across a broad range of elementary grades to foster autonomous self-esteem. The discussion includes future research directions and addresses several limitations of the current studies.departmental bulletin pape

    Get PDF
Primary school students in Burkina Faso achieve poor scores in mathematics in various learning assessment sessions. One of the factors was the inadequacy of teaching strategies. I therefore undertook this study to identify these shortcomings. The study, which took place in Nahouri Province, brought together four teachers (two teachers managing each class) and eight primary education inspectors through classroom observations The results revealed a lack of strategies to provide students opportunities to engage and participate in learning and to lead them in a learning process that calls on their critical and analytical thinking.departmental bulletin pape
