    Error Handling Approaches in Programming Languages

    Error handling is a part of nearly every computer program, but it is rarely the main focus of a program\u27s developers. Nevertheless, correct error handling is important because it can enable a program to recover from abnormal circumstances and continue to function and serve its purpose. Programming languages offer a variety of tools and approaches for programs to detect and handle errors. I investigated the different approaches to error handling in contemporary programming languages. I found three general paradigms of error handling approaches. One paradigm was Special Return Value, in which certain return values of a function signify that an error occurred. Another paradigm was Try-Catch, where exception objects can be raised at some point in code and intercepted and handled by guards further up in the call stack. The final paradigm was Type System Approaches, in which languages used their type system to encode possible failures and ensure proper handling of these states. Besides the three main paradigms, I found several smaller or auxiliary features, such as Defer, Checked Exceptions, and Automatically Closing Resources. In addition, I compared an error handling feature originally created as an academic proposal (Compensations) with actual implementations of a similar feature in modern languages, finding that the actual implementation is more straightforward at the cost of being somewhat less powerful

    Biochar (charcoal produced through anaerobic combustion of biomass) provides a mechanism of concurrently sequestering carbon and increasing soil fertility and food production. Positive relationships have been documented between biochar concentration and plant growth. However, effects of biochar are variable across source materials, soils, environments, and plants. This variability causes difficulty in generalizing from previous research. Our study investigated the effects of biochar from a uniform source (waste wood from a hazelnut orchard), in a constructed soil inoculated with mycorrhizae, on the different plant tissues (roots, shoots, and fruits) of three functionally distinct species: cherry tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicon), bush beans (Phaseolus vulgaris), and willow saplings (Salix sp.). This experiment took place over the summer of 2021 and five biochar treatments were used: 0%, 2.5%, 7.5%, and 20% by weight, including a low inoculant treatment at the 7.5% biochar level. Plants were grown in fabric pots, rotated weekly, fertilized and irrigated. We found that biochar had a highly significant impact on plant biomass, with increased biomass at higher biochar levels and the strongest responses in green beans. Tomatoes were the only species to demonstrate differing effects on tissue growth, with only fruit and shoot biomass increasing with biochar application. Biochar treatment correlated with higher germination rates and earlier flowering in green beans. Our results are consistent with the prior findings that biochar can increase growth rates of a variety of plants and different tissues within plants.     Promoting Political Action through Community Based Social Marketing

    Political participation is vital for a robust democracy. Voting behavior has been extensively studied and modeled. Political behaviors between elections are important too. I tested whether models of pro-environmental behavior can be applied to political behavior and studied how to increase the political behavior of calling one’s representative. I applied a Community Based Social Marketing approach. I interviewed experts with experience in activism and legislative work, who identified that calling was an effective political action. An online survey (N = 241) explored why voters do or don’t call their representatives and provided a test of pro-environmental behavior models. Participants identified the major barrier to calling one’s representative as believing it to be ineffective. The major benefits were to be part of a movement and that it is an important action. Finally, I ran a field experiment where volunteers called constituents and asked them to call their representative. The control condition received a standard script; the experimental condition received a script that emphasized the effectiveness of calling and being part of a movement. The experiment had a low response rate (N = 54) and no significant difference was found between the control and experimental conditions (X2(2) = .37, p = .83). Although no significant results are found, it may be helpful for organizations encouraging political action to stress the efficacy of the action, provide a social component, stress the importance of the action, and have more personal contact with the constituent.     Lucius Annaeus Seneca, more commonly referred to simply as Seneca, was a Roman philosopher and tragedian who lived during the 1st century CE. He is famous for being the tutor and eventual advisor to the Emperor Nero, as well as for his numerous philosophical writings and his tragedies. One of the most prominent features of both his philosophical texts and his plays is his interest in human psychology. This interest often manifests in visceral representations of trauma throughout his tragedies. The Troades is a play which centers entirely on the experiences of women who have, and still are, experiencing horrific traumas. Set after the mythological fall of Troy, Seneca’s Troades follows Hecuba, Andromache, and a chorus of Trojan women in the time leading up to their departure from Troy as slaves to the Greek men who have destroyed their city and murdered their husbands and sons. By examining Seneca’s text through the lens of major trauma theorists such as Sigmund Freud and Cathy Caruth, this thesis highlights the ways that the Troades focalizes the voices of female survivors through in-depth explorations of the various ways trauma impacts the human psyche

    The Effects of Humidity on Spontaneous Cocrystallization: A Survey of Diacid Cocrystals with Caffeine, Theophylline, and Nicotinamide

    Pharmaceutical cocrystals comprise one active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) and at least one small molecule excipient coformer. While solvent evaporation and mechanochemistry are the preferred methods for their synthesis, some cocrystals are known to form spontaneously at ambient conditions when powders of input materials are mixed-a process not yet fully understood. Aqueous humidity is also known to accelerate spontaneous cocrystal formation. We report here the extent of spontaneous cocrystallization for 14 cocrystal systems, at four levels of humidity. The binary cocrystals in our study consist of a model API (caffeine, theophylline, nicotinamide) and a small chain diacid coformer (oxalic acid, malonic acid, maleic acid, fumaric acid, succinic acid, glutaric acid). The spontaneous cocrystal formation was monitored ex situ by powder X-ray diffraction over several weeks. Our results show cocrystal formation in all 14 systems to varying extent and are consistent with literature reports that higher humidity correlates with more rapid cocrystal formation. We find that cocrystals containing smaller coformers often form faster. Based on our findings, we identify several cocrystals as candidates for future study
