We Don\u27t Need No Education: The Impact of Electing a College-Educated Mayor on Educational Outcomes
This paper investigates the role of tertiary education on the educational policy decisions of Brazilian mayors. Using a close election regression discontinuity design, I identify the effect of electing a college educated mayor on a battery of educational outcomes. In contrast to assumptions made in much of the literature, I find that municipalities that elect college-educated mayors do not have better educational outcomes than municipalities that elect mayors without a college education
The Unintended Consequences of Ohio\u27s Environmental Remediation Law of the Oil and Gas Industry
This paper investigates the unintended consequences of oil and gas legislation aimed at promoting the capping of idle and orphaned wells in Ohio. On September of 2018, Ohio passed House Bill 225, which reallocated the share of oil and gas severance tax dollars, by shifting the share of funds set aside for well capping from 14% to 30%. Using a difference-in-differences comparison of the set of wells located in border counties in Pennsylvania and Ohio, this paper reflects on the effects of HB225. Findings show that while the number of well permits issued per county per month in the set of Ohio border counties increased after HB225, the set of existing wells that were plugged remained unchanged. Using a linear probability model, the probability that wells that were permitted were actually drilled remained unchanged, while the probability that drilled wells were plugged also remained unchanged overall, and actually decreased in the northern region of border counties. The findings of this study contribute to Sa growing literature on the failure of regulatory policy to provide meaningful effects on environmental outcomes, due to a lack of implementation strategy and unintended consequences of new legislation
Chemoselective Quinoline and Isoquinoline Reduction by Energy Transfer Catalysis Enabled Hydrogen Atom Transfer
(Hetero)arene reduction is one of the key avenues for synthesizing related cyclic alkenes and alkanes. While catalytic hydrogenation and Birch reduction are the two broadly utilized approaches for (hetero)arene reduction across academia and industry over the last century, both methods have encountered significant chemoselectivity challenges. We hereby introduce a highly chemoselective quinoline and isoquinoline reduction protocol operating through selective energy transfer (EnT) catalysis, which enables subsequent hydrogen atom transfer (HAT). The design of this protocol bypasses the conventional metric of reduction reaction, that is, the reductive potential, and instead relies on the triplet energies of the chemical moieties and the kinetic barriers of energy and hydrogen atom transfer events. Many reducing labile functional groups, which were incompatible with previous (hetero)arene reduction reactions, are retained in this reaction. We anticipate that this protocol will trigger the further advancement of chemoselective arene reduction and enable the current arene-rich drug space to escape from flatland
Hunt for magnetic signatures of hidden-photon and axion dark matter in the wilderness
Earth can act as a transducer to convert ultralight bosonic dark matter (axions and hidden photons) into an oscillating magnetic field with a characteristic pattern across its surface. Here we describe the first results of a dedicated experiment, the Search for Noninteracting Particles Experimental Hunt, that aims to detect such dark-matter-induced magnetic-field patterns by performing correlated measurements with a network of magnetometers in relatively quiet magnetic environments (in the wilderness far from human-generated magnetic noise). Our experiment constrains parameter space describing hidden-photon and axion dark matter with Compton frequencies in the 0.5–5.0 Hz range. Limits on the kinetic-mixing parameter for hidden-photon dark matter represent the best experimental bounds to date in this frequency range

Valuable Curricula: Distinguishing Preschool Curricular Beliefs through Teachers’ Communication Styles
Socialization styles, or the process of teaching an individual how to behave in society based on a superimposed value system, have been shown to differ between socioeconomic status groups (Lareau, 2011; Park, 2016). Most socialization today occurs in schools, the earliest exposure being preschool. I operationalize socialization in terms of the values children are told are important, either implicitly or explicitly. How are value systems embedded within preschool curricula? What language and communication tools do teachers use to relay social messages to students? Using Pierre Bourdieu’s theoretical concepts of habitus, cultural capital, and social reproduction as a framework, I utilize mixed methods (secondary survey data analysis and qualitative interviews) to empirically test hypotheses regarding the link between the socioeconomic status of students and socialization styles their teachers employ. The results confirm my hypothesis that teachers\u27 socialization styles in preschool classrooms reflect their students\u27 socioeconomic status. This study provides insights into current socialization practices and modern social reproduction, and concludes with future research recommendations
Computational Studies of Iridium (III)-Catalyzed Tandem C-H Activation
Carbon-hydrogen bonds are ubiquitous in organic compounds but are typically inert. However, advancement in organometallic reactions has enabled chemists to transform these bonds and release the energy stored inside them. Such C-H activation reactions are highly attractive for developing more environmentally friendly syntheses. Our research is concerned with the study of two successive C-H activations of both C(sp2)-H and C(sp3)-H bonds of an anisole reactant aided by an iridium-III catalyst bound to a Cp* ligand. Using density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we aimed to optimize transition states for this reaction and determine its energetics. Our work has yielded unexpected results, identifying an intermediate transition state resulting from oxidative addition to the transition metal catalyst with a stabilized metal hydride intermediate, not the expected concerted metalation deprotonation (CMD) process. These findings can be used to help guide future study and understanding of these reactions
