No full textIntroduction: Disagreements between people on different sides of popular issues in STEM are often rooted in differences in “mental models,” which include both rational and emotional cognitive associations about the issue; especially given these issues are systemic in nature.
Methods: In the research described here, we employ the fuzzy cognitive mapping software MentalModeler (developed by one of the authors)1 as a tool for articulating implicit and explicit assumptions about one’s knowledge of both the environmental and social science and values underpinning complex system related issues. More specifically, we test the assumption that this pedagogical approach will foster certain aspects of perspective taking that can be traced with cognitive development and systems thinking as students not only articulate their own understanding of an issue, but also articulate the view of others.
Results and discussion: Results are discussed with respect to systems thinking that is developed through this type of modeling

My autobiography of Reed Erickson, or, how to re-member a ghost
No full textTransgender philanthropist Reed Erickson has gained the renewed attention of trans historians as more of his papers become available in multiple archives. While other scholars set out to piece together the life story of this leopard-owning, four-times married, fugitive multi-millionaire who invested substantial money and energy into improving gender-affirming healthcare, I take a different approach to the Erickson archive. Rooted in affect studies, archive studies, and trans/queer theories, this essay plays with fabrication and fabulation to produce not a straightforward history, but rather, an embodied encounter with the material afterlife held within the archive. Pivoting around an engagement with the Erickson family bible, this essay embarks on a trans-temporal figuring of matter and body in order to re-member the fractured ghosts of (trans)history\u27s past, present, and future hauntings
