He suceeded predecessor history librarians Edith McAuley (1979-1990), Tom Gaffney (1990-2005), beginning in September 2005. Schechter is the Library\u27s first archivist and conservator, having created the archival and preservation initiatives at PPL, including digital preservation services (2014), organizing, managing, and promoting the Portland Room at the downtown Library. Schechter came to Portland Public Library, from Saint Joseph\u27s College of Maine where he had created the College\u27s Archives and was Information Literacy Librarian. Prior to that, he created archives throughout Maine, parallel to teaching book and paper conservation in numerous Maine libraries and at both regional and national conferences. The article also describes how archival services and outreach changed during the Covid-19 pandemic (beginning in March 2020)
