    Permanent Commission Seeks to End Systemic Injustices

    This article looks at the history of the Permanent Commission on the Status of Racial, Indigenous, and Tribal Populations in Maine and its accomplishments to date. Legislation for its creation was proposed three years ago by Rachel Talbot Ross. She currently co-chairs the Commission along with Penobscot Nation Tribal Ambassador Maulian Dana. Significant accomplishments include 2022 passage of LD 2, An Act to Require the Inclusion of Racial Impact Statements in the Legislative Process which examines the potential impacts passage of bills could have on existing disparities. Among the Commission\u27s other focus areas are hosting community listening sessions and working to pass a bill that would allow foreign-trained physicians to practice in Maine

    Report about a conference titled Fulfilling Potential: Foreign Trained Physicians -- a Pathway Forward for Maine that was sponsored by the New Mainers Resource Center, Portland Adult Education, and the Daniel Hanley Center for Health Leadership. Maine, like many other states, has a shortage of healthcare workers and many trained refugees and asylum seekers who cannot get licensed to practice in this country. Leaders from other states shared their experiences at the remote conference. Lewiston Representative Kristen Cloutier is sponsoring legislation to create a Commission to address this issue
