Aroostook County has long been referred to as Maine\u27s Potato Empire. Due to the County\u27s rich and fertile soil, as well as a short season, potatoes became the dominant crop as early as the 19th century. With contemporary consolidation, potato farms are bigger but fewer in number. The merits of MERIT : a state-run program provides retirement savings to workers who otherwise wouldn\u27t have a plan
In 2023, MERIT (Maine Retirement Investment Trust) established a partnership with the Colorado SecureSavings Program to begin Maine\u27s state-run retirement savings program. Maine investors benefit from lower fees obtained by being a member pf the partnership. Employees can choose paycheck deduction amounts and investments. The program, resembling a Roth IRA account, helps boost retirement savings for employees of smaller companies- two examples being Len Libby Candies and Quoddy Shoes. Gettin\u27 chippy : Taste of Maine potato chip plant under construction in Aroostook County
A 96,000 square-foot potato chip plant is under construction at the former Loring Air Force Base, in Limestone. Owner Bruce Sargent says he expects the plant to be open by April 2026. The plant will use up to 1,500 acres of Aroostook County potatoes annually, and employ 40 to 60 people.
