Effect of Acute Resistance Exercise in Different Intensities and Body Segments on Cardiovascular Variables
Background: An acute session of resistance exercise changes cardiovascular parameters according to the type of prescription. The objective this study to evaluate the heart rate, systolic and diastolic blood pressure and myocardial oxygen consumption behaviors during execution of resistance exercise applied in acute and isolated way, with different intensities and body segments. Methods: 52 healthy and active young performed the experimental protocol with five stages. In the first stage, it was carried out the one-repetition maximum test (1RM) for knee extension (LL) and elbow flexion (UL) and, in the following phases, four resistance exercise protocols were applied, on different days with random order execution: endurance protocol (2 series, 20 reps and 40% of 1RM) and strength protocol (2 series, 8 reps and 80% of 1RM) for upper and lower limbs. Heart rate (HR) was monitored by Polar S810i heart rate monitor, systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) were measured by auscultation in the left arm, and MVO2 was calculated from SBP and HR. All these measurements were measured immediately after the execution of the first (M1) and second (M2) series. Finding: There were significant increases in M1 and M2 in comparison to their respective rest in HR (p <0.001), SBP (p <0.05) and MVO2 (p <0.001) in all protocols applied. For PAD there were significant decreases in M1 of endurance (p = 0.028) and force lower limbs (p = 0.022) protocols compared to the resting values. There are no significant changes among the proposed protocols. Conclusion: Strength and endurance protocols, run with upper and lower limbs, applied in acute and isolated way, were able to promote changes in cardiovascular variables in relation to their respective resting value. However, lower limbs endurance protocol stands out in their differences among them, due to the longer execution period and larger muscle group
Urinary tract infection due to beta-lactams-resistant Staphylococcus warneri: A case report
Staphylococcus warneri, similarly to other coagulase-negatine Staphylococcus (CoNS), is a commensal of the skin, mucous membranes, nasal cavities and mouth of humans, found in 50% of the population. This species usually represents less than 1% of the total staphylococcal skin population. S. warneri can potentially cause severe infections usually in immunocompromised individuals, even more in combination with the presence of indwelling devices and/or implants. The key treatment for such infections is the removal of the device. Sometimes, even in the absence of a foreign body, Staphylococcus warneri may be implicated as the causative agent of an infection in immunocompetent patients. We report here a case of chronic urinary tract infection in adult healthy patient caused by S.warneri, its clinical significance and resistant to commonly used beta-lactams
Association of ADH1 and DDR48 Expression with Azole Resistance in Candida Albicans
Objectives: The ADH1 (alcohol dehydrogenase) and DDR48 genes were found to be upregulated in fluconazole resistant Candida albicans. Understanding the drug resistance mechanisms and genes will help in the development of new antifungal agents that can reverse drug resistance. This study aimed to investigate the role of ADH1and DDR48 genes in fluconazole resistance in C. albicans. Methods: This study involved 19 fluconazole susceptible and 6 fluconazole resistant C. albicans isolates. The MICs of fluconazole were determined by the E-test. Quantitative expressions of ADH1, CDR1 (Candida Drug Resistance), DDR48 and FLU1 genes were assessed by real time PCR.Results: There was a statistically significant higher expression levels of CDR1, FLU1, ADH1 and DDR48 in resistant and susceptible dose dependent isolates than in susceptible isolates (P = 0.009, 0.008, 0.01, 0.014 respectively). Strong positive correlations were observed between the expression levels of each of ADH1and DDR4 with azole resistance genes CDR1 and FLU1 [(rs) = 0.945, 0.815, respectively; P <0.001; (rs) = 0.852 and 0.76, respectively; P <0.001].Conclusions: This is the first study that showed positive correlation between DDR48 and azole resistance genes. It indicated that ADH1 and DDR48 are associated with the resistance mechanisms of C. albicans to fluconazole. Identification of new drugs that target the proteins encoded by these genes will help in eradication of fluconazole resistant C. albicans
Chinese herbal decoction – Xuming Tang: a possible effective treatment for ischemic stroke patients
So far, rt – PA remains the best treatment for ischemic stroke within the 3-6 hour window after the onset. However, the majority of ischemic stroke patients do not receive rt – PA treatment due to various reasons and they can only accept the treatment which prevents a second attack. The Chinese herbal decoction – Xuming Tang has been recorded as an effective treatment for stroke in the traditional Chinese medicine book. Recently it has been tested in over 1,500 patients who started taking this herbal decoction from 2.5 hours to days after the onset of stroke in randomised and quasi-randomised trials. It has been shown that approximately 1/3 of the stroke patients fully recovered and another 1/3 improved dramatically after the treatment period. Compared with the data from the control group which received either conventional therapy (this prevents a second attack) or conventional therapy in combination with other Chinese herbal decoctions, Xuming Tang is a better choice for ischemic stroke patients who are ineligible for rt – PA thrombolysis within 3-6 hour window or who miss this time window
Bubonic Plague: a brief history of changes to current situation in Brazil
Plague is a globally distributed, zoonotic disease caused by the bacterium  Yersinia pestis. With recurrent epidemics since the Antique, the plague ravaged the population, producing demographic, political, cultural and religious incommensurables effects. The major clinical forms of plague are bubonic, pneumonic, and septic. The signals and symptoms include fever, chills, general malaise, buboes, may evolve to septicemia, meningitis, hemorrhages, disseminate intravascular coagulation, shock and, not rarely, death. It can occur, still, lung infection (pneumonic form of the disease), with severe respiratory condition, fever, dyspnea, also leading to death
Simplification on the Reduction of Comminuted Mandibular Fractures for Stable Internal Fixation
Background: The fractures of the comminuted type have a prevalence of 30 to 50% when related to the ones affecting the mandibular bone. They are characterized by the presence of multiple bone fragments involving several lines of fracture, resulting in small fragments within the same area. Usually resulting from high-energy trauma, they cause large displacements, tooth loss, as well as associated lesions in soft tissues. Cases Reports: This study aimed to report two cases addressing the simplification method in the reduction of comminuted fractures treated by the method of open reduction and functionally stable fixation, which emphasized the importance of establishing a sequence of reduction maneuvers and application of osteosynthesis for a functional, occlusal and aesthetic result of the lower facial third. Conclusion: The simplification of mandibular comminuted fractures proves to be an excellent ally when one intends to reduce difficulties of reduction of the fracture and the dental occlusion on the transoperative, as well as to facilitate the application of 2.4 reconstruction plates
Postural control modulation during motor imagery tasks: A systematic review
The motor imagery (MI) has two strategies (kinesthetic and visual) and can be defined as an act to codify the mental rehearsal of an intended action, without executing it. Studying the execution of the movement, several researchers believe that the deep muscles of the trunk are activated before the agonist of the limbs, showing a motor neurophysiologic recruitment order. This behavior can be also seen during MI tasks as the postural control, because the postural control is inserted in the movement context. The aim was to investigate, by a systematic review, evidences of MI and the postural control on healthy subjects. The selected articles were searched on different databases, dated from 1985 to 2014.Twelve studies were selected regarding the MI and the postural control on healthy subjects. All articles using balance scale or those which were about clinical conditions were excluded. Data show that kinesthetic MI with high levels of vividness promotes major changes in the body oscillations when comparing with the visual MI. To date, the number of articles about this theme is limited and the results should be interpreted cautiousl
Community health agent and the interface with the educational actions
IntroductionWithin the mandate of all the professionals who make up the Family Health Strategy , health education is common to all . The Nurse as part of the team has a key role in health levels of individuals, families and communities , because the primary purpose of these actions , are guided by the maintenance, promotion, restoration of health , prevention of diseases and disorders and psychological contribution to dealing with the consequences of an imbalance in health disease process can generate a family or community context.MethodsDescriptive qualitative study conducted in the city of Juazeiro do Norte, Ceará , Brazil , with the subject 17 nurses working in the Family Health Strategy . Was used to collect data, semi-structured interviews and content analysis organization.ResultsIt was evident that this is still a perception of limited health education in the prevention of diseases, which may affect the procedures adopted to implement these actions . On the other hand, although with this curative vision care, nurses consider these actions for planning, community health agents , which reveals a care focused on the real needs of the population . However, although they reveal how to easily build these shares access to community workers , point out problems such as lack of management support.ConclusionBecomes necessary reorientation of educational practices in health, which depends on the qualification through graduation and support managers to ensure necessary resources to implement them , so that they are geared towards health promotion, contributing a greater citizen participation to improve the quality of life .Key words: Health Education in Nursing.
