THE EFFECTS OF DOMESTIC WASTE DISPOSAL AMONG COMMUNITIES IN THE WESTERN REGION OF SIERRA LEONE - A CASE STUDY OF WATERLOO, CALABATOWN, WELLINGTON, FERRY JUNCTION, KINGTOM, AND LUMLEY
This study investigates the effects of domestic waste disposal among communities in the Western region of Sierra Leone and its effects on the environment in Western Rural and Western Urban areas. Waste management is a challenge in Africa and has caused health issues and adverse effects on the global climate. This study was conducted within the Freetown municipality, and data was collected from 300 respondents. A non-probability sampling technique was employed to collect information from respondents. According to the study, most people dispose of waste weekly, and their garbage is smaller. Also, the researchers revealed that people prefer burning waste in the air to other methods, and many do not have dustbins or containers in their compounds. Nevertheless, this method of waste disposal causes ill conditions in the heart, kidneys, and other vital organs. The study showed that plastics, rubbers, and paper are the common domestic waste in Freetown. Rubber and plastic are mainly used to gather waste, and this breeds parasites that cause malaria and other environmental diseases. Trucks and tricycles are used to transport waste to dumping sites.
Very virulent gullying processes cause natural disasters in the town of Kikwit (DR Congo). Certain vulnerable neighborhoods like Ndeke-Zulu are victims, and enormous consequences are deplored. Two large ravines particularly attracted attention and were the subject of this study: the “Arrêt Foire” and “Lukwilu” ravines, which are about to cut the city into different pieces. In-depth observations carried out between December 8, 2019, and December 6, 2023, made it possible to determine the hazards and the outline of the enormous damage that these two ravines have inflicted on the urban environment, particularly on land, roads, habitat, water resources and rivers in the impacted neighborhoods. Given the ineffectiveness of the anti-erosion fight carried out by local actors, the study recommends the development of rainwater drainage infrastructures in combination with a covering plant cover, aiming to reduce mass movements responsible for disasters. THE PROJECT “STAR-LITTLE STAR”. STRENGTHENING 4-AND 5-YEAR-OLD CHILDREN’S SOCIO-EMOTIONAL AND COLLABORATIVE SKILLS THROUGH SINGING AND REPRESENTING A SONG VISUALLY AND DRAMATICALLY
The present study explores the attitudes of early childhood children towards activities that combine the arts on the occasion of an original song and its visual and dramatic representation. The project was carried out in the context of a nursery school/kindergarten children’s (N=20) participation in a song contest that was conducted by “Make a wish” of Greece, an organization that aims to support children who are struggling with serious illnesses. The aims of the study were to cultivate children’s collaborative and social-emotional skills, to entertain them and to provide opportunities to encourage their creativity. The project was carried out in 4 stages: a) creating an original song on the theme of a star that makes wishes come true, b) young children learning to sing the song, c) recording the song in the studio, d) visual representation of the song working individually and in groups, d) creating of a video presentation that included the young children's paintings with the song as background music, d) dramatization of the song and its performance at the summer celebration of the school. The data were collected through observation, diary notes and children's products. General findings show that the young children were given opportunities to cultivate their creativity through their engagement in the activities, have fun, cooperate with each other, feel part of a larger group and cultivate social-emotional skills such as empathy, self-confidence, learning to accept the criticism of others and respect others’ views. COVID 19; A GLOBAL PANDEMIC WITH EMBEDDED POLITICAL IDEOLOGIES FOR A NEW WORLD ORDER
The COVID-19 pandemic presents itself as one major challenge to globalization as an important product of Liberal ideology (Political and Economic liberalism). After the discovery of the coronavirus in Wuhan, China, in less than three months the virus found itself in many countries of the global north, especially in Europe and followed by other regions of the world. The mode of infection and transmission of the virus from China to other geographies was through transportation and migration, especially air transport and trade. In the face of this global pandemic, many countries embarked on control measures such as lockdowns, social distancing, isolation and quarantines as well as detention of infected persons. The early control measures adopted globally to curb the rate of spread of COVID-19 were significant tenets of socialism, communism and totalitarianism, which are anti-integration, less cooperation and the control of individual liberties and freedoms. In spite of the anti-democratic nature of the early control measures against the COVID-19 pandemic, western countries, which are the champions of democratic values and the promotion of human rights and liberal principles, accepted the anti-democratic measures to contain and control the mode of spread and the global infections of the COVID pandemic. The use of socialist, communist and totalitarian tenets or ideas to control the COVID pandemic, which are products of anti-liberalism and globalization, are signs that some aspects of totalitarianism, socialism and communism can be adopted by Liberal states in times of global emergencies and stresses, but not to return to socialism, communism or totalitarianism which may erode the gains made in promoting human freedoms and the many avenues created by globalization through neo-liberal ideas. STRATEGIC WATCH AND ECONOMIC INTELLIGENCE: KEYS TO REGIONAL COMPETITIVENESS IN MOROCCO
This study examines the impact of territorial dynamics on regional economic development in Morocco, focusing on the roles of demographic, geographic, administrative, and industrial factors in shaping territorial management and competitiveness. Using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) to analyze data from 454 respondents, the findings reveal significant influences of demographic characteristics, territorial attributes, innovation, administrative systems, and stakeholder engagement on territorial management practices. Specifically, the results indicate that demographic factors and territorial characteristics positively impact management practices, while innovation and industrialization enhance efficiency. However, current administrative systems present challenges to effective management. Strategic monitoring and economic intelligence, alongside stakeholder engagement, significantly contribute to effective management, which in turn boosts territorial competitiveness. These results underscore the need for policy measures promoting decentralization, technological innovation, and inclusive governance to foster balanced and sustainable regional development in Morocco.
This study investigates the financial psychology of Moroccan investors in cryptocurrency, focusing on the determinants of perceived investment risk. Design/methodology/approach: A quantitative survey was conducted among Moroccan investors, and regression analysis was applied to identify the factors influencing their risk perceptions, including transaction fees, complexity, security, anonymity, fast transactions, volatility, and lack of regulation. Findings: The analysis reveals that volatility and lack of regulation significantly heighten perceived risk, whereas fast transactions, reduced complexity, and improved security mitigate it. These results suggest targeted strategies to address volatility and regulatory concerns can decrease perceived risks and attract more investors. Originality: This research provides new insights into the interplay of technological, regulatory, and psychological factors influencing investment behavior in a developing country context, specifically Morocco, thereby contributing to the broader literature on financial inclusion and technology adoption. Research limitations/implications: The study's limitations include its reliance on self-reported data and the specific focus on Moroccan investors, which may limit the generalizability of the findings. Practical implications: By addressing identified risk factors, policymakers and cryptocurrency platforms can develop targeted interventions to reduce perceived risks, thus encouraging broader investment and enhancing financial inclusion. CONTRIBUTORY PENSION SCHEME AND CONSUMPTION DECISIONS OF NON-DURABLE GOODS AMONG RETIRED FEDERAL CIVIL SERVNATS IN ANAMBRA STATE, NIGERIA
The neglect suffered by retirees recently and the attendant consequences necessitated this research aimed at investigating the impact of contributory pension schemes on post-retirement consumption decisions of non-durable goods of retired federal civil servants in Anambra State. A sample of 500 respondents was drawn from two communities in the state, each from two local government areas of each senatorial zone of Anambra State, through stratified random sampling technique and purposive sampling technique, respectively. A test of the reliability of the research instruments was done using the Cronbach Alpha test statistic on a sample of 50 respondents for pilot testing which shows that it is more significant than 0.7, indicating that the research instruments were reliable. Data for the study were analysed using descriptive statistical tools and logistic regression techniques. Significant findings indicate that contributory pension scheme savings have a likelihood of positive and significant contributions to the consumption of non-durable goods. Similarly, further findings also indicate that higher education, higher income level, large family size, socio-economic responsibilities, unemployment, high-income level and poor health status are factors that have the likelihood of significantly influencing post-retirement consumption of non-durable goods in Anambra State. The study recommends, amongst others, the payment of living wage to workers to enable them to save and invest while still in active service so as not to depend solely on their contributory pension scheme when retired. ESTIMATING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN TECHNOLOGY AND ECONOMIC GROWTH - EVIDENCE FROM SIERRA LEONE EXPERIENCE
The study analyzes the relationship between technology and economic growth in Sierra Leone from 2011 to 2022 and the data are treated via the E-Views program. ARDL methodology was used. The results showed a co-integration relationship between the study variables (computer use in general; computer use at work; and computer use in education, training, and economic growth) and the results presented that the deviation from long-term equilibrium is corrected using an error correction model which long term corrected as a percentage correction (−0.06) each year from the short term to the long term and showed the results of the structural stability test of the (ARDL) model. It is a structural stability test for long and short-term coefficients, which showed that the data used in this study are free from any structural changes but has stable parameters over time. The study also used CUSUM's Squares test, where the test results showed that the study model used is economically good and can be relied upon to anticipate economic solutions in Sierra Leone according to the situation in the coming years, and among the most important recommendations of the study are the following: the need to encourage the use of technology in work, education, and training, and the need for expansion in using these technological means as a gateway to the digital economy and the digital state. THE EFFECTS OF MONEY PRIMING ON RISK-TAKING BEHAVIOR
Studies have found that exposure to money influences human behaviors. This study examines the effects of money priming on risk-taking. When either exposed or not exposed to money priming, participants responded to the likelihood that they would engage in unsafe behaviors and the perceived risk of these behaviors. The results revealed that individuals tended to exhibit more risky behavior when they were exposed to money priming. The theoretical implications of these findings and various directions for further research are discussed. Article visualizations
