EXTRINSIC MOTIVATION AND EMPLOYEE PERFORMANCE AMONG LAW ENFORCEMENT PERSONNEL

Providing extrinsic incentives like awards, recognition, or chances for career progression does not always equate to higher performance from employees. Extrinsic motivators have the potential to encourage desired actions in the short term, but over time, they may become less successful, especially if they conflict with intrinsic motivators or foster a culture of reliance on outside rewards. The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of extrinsic motivation on employee performance among law enforcement personnel with the objective to determine the effect of promotion and establish how training, the work environment and job security affect employee performance at the National Police Service Commission, Kenya. The study adopted the ERG Theory, the Two-Factor Theory of Motivation and the Hierarchy of Needs Theory. The study adopted a descriptive research design analyzing data from a sample of 180 employees from a sampling frame of 270 employees in the target population. The study collected data using questionnaires, tested the validity and reliability of the data, and analyzed the data using both descriptive and inferential statistical methods. The study established that extrinsic motivation has a favorable influence on staff performance; employee performance has a strong positive and significant influence, and work environment has a moderate positive and significant influence, while job security has a positive but low significant influence on employee performance at the National Police Service Commission of Kenya. Training has a significant positive influence on employee performance. The study recommended that in order to improve staff promotion at the commission, the management should establish clear criteria and pathways for advancement, ensuring that employees understand the skills and achievements needed for progression; To improve on employee training at NPSC, managers should conduct thorough training needs assessments to identify specific skill gaps and areas for development among employees; To improve on the work environment at NPSC, managers should develop open communication channels where employees feel comfortable sharing their ideas, concerns, and feedback. They should also design physical workspaces that promote comfort, creativity, and flexibility, offering options for both collaborative and independent work and to ensure that employees commit to the organization and retain them for the long term, managers should clearly communicate the organization's mission, vision, and long-term goals to in-still confidence and trust among employees. Study findings inform strategic decisions in areas such as compensation, performance management, and employee engagement. HR professionals can use insights from this study to design incentive programs that effectively motivate employees to achieve organizational goals while aligning rewards with desired outcomes.  Article visualizations

FACTORS AFFECTING TOURISTS’ SATISFACTION WITH COMMUNITY-BASED TOURISM IN MANG DEN COMMUNE, QUANG NGAI PROVINCE, VIETNAM

This study investigates the factors affecting tourist satisfaction with community-based tourism in Mang Den Commune, Quang Ngai Province, Vietnam, aiming to provide guidance for sustainable tourism development. A mixed-method approach was employed, combining secondary data collection from government reports, academic sources, maps, and media with primary data collection through face-to-face and online questionnaire surveys. The questionnaire covered tourists’ demographics, evaluations of six satisfaction criteria (landscape and natural environment, infrastructure and tourism services, human factors, tourism activities and products, prices, and overall satisfaction), and additional suggestions for improvement. A total of 200 questionnaires were distributed, with 150 valid responses obtained, using a convenience sampling technique to ensure representativeness. Data were analyzed with SPSS 20.0, including descriptive statistics, Cronbach’s Alpha for reliability, and Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) to identify and group satisfaction factors. Results indicate that tourist satisfaction depends not only on infrastructure and services but also significantly on local residents’ attitudes, natural landscapes, cultural experiences, and tourism activities. Strengths of Mang Den include its fresh climate, serene environment, and unique cultural features, while challenges such as insufficient professional service skills, infrastructure gaps, environmental management, and limited promotion affect visitor experiences. Recommendations include coordinated development strategies, infrastructure improvement, skills training for local residents, enhanced marketing, and sustainable tourism management to increase satisfaction and promote long-term development.  Article visualizations

SOUTHERN VIETNAM CULTURAL IMPRINTS THROUGH THE PERSPECTIVE FROM THE COLLECTION OF SAIGON POTTERY STATUES AT THE HO CHI MINH CITY MUSEUM

The article focuses on the Saigon pottery collection at the Ho Chi Minh City Museum, introduced in the thematic exhibition "Saigon Pottery and the Nearby Region - Characteristics of Southern Vietnam Culture". By systemizing product types, analyzing typical crafting techniques, and decoding the layers of meaning of the decorative pattern system, the article sheds light on the unique values of this ceramic line. The research results demonstrate that Saigon ceramics are not only diverse in types (household, construction, decoration, worship) but also reflect a sophisticated technical process, which is the result of a strong intertwining between indigenous traditions and the industry of the Chinese community. In particular, decorative topics from plants, holy beasts, religions, to literary figures and the Sino-Nom civilization system have transformed each artifact into an "authentic document", recording the economic, social, and spiritual life of Saigon - Cho Lon from the 18th century to the mid-20th century. This study confirms that Saigon pottery is a significant cultural heritage that needs to be preserved and promoted within the diverse cultural landscape of the South and Vietnam.  Article visualizations

THE SOCIOLOGICAL LAZARUS EFFECT AND THE SUSTAINABILITY DILEMMA: A THEORETICAL ANALYSIS ON MECHANISMS OF STRUCTURAL DESPAIR

The study uses theoretical and conceptual analysis to turn the medical Lazarus Effect into a sociological metaphor: the Sociological Lazarus Effect (SLE). This metaphor helps build a new theoretical framework by integrating social theories such as Durkheim’s anomie, Gramsci’s hegemony, and Snyder’s hope theory. The theory suggests societal despair is a layered structural obstacle, halting collective action. Instead of producing empirical data, the study creates a model to show why a sustained SLE is unfeasible. Three key structural mechanisms—cognitive closure, erosion of social capital, and structural nihilism—undermine collective agency and prolong hopelessness. Findings indicate that while spontaneous SLE is theoretically possible in complex social systems, sustainable transformation through collective reaction is largely impossible due to structural paralysis. Instead of expecting a macro-miracle, attention should turn to building Counter-Hegemonic Hope from the grassroots, aiming to restore collective will and trust.  Article visualizations

INFLUENCE OF PERCEPTION OF INFLATION ON SPENDING HABITS IN NIGERIA

This study examined how Nigerians perceive inflation and how these perceptions shape their spending habits, with a focus on residents of Umuahia City. Using a descriptive-correlational research design, data were gathered from 384 respondents selected through the Raosoft sample size calculator at a 95% confidence level. A pilot test conducted with 30 participants produced a reliability coefficient of 0.814, confirming the instrument’s internal consistency. The findings showed that respondents’ perceptions of inflation were strongly influenced by prior experiences with rising prices, which made them more cautious and financially restrained. Social interaction also played a major role, as individuals relied on peer discussions, media reports, and online platforms to interpret ongoing price changes. Cognitive interpretations were shaped by personal struggles, with many respondents linking inflation to governance issues and economic policies. In terms of purchase behavior, Nigerians increasingly compared prices, substituted cheaper alternatives for preferred brands, and significantly reduced or postponed non-essential purchases. A statistically significant relationship emerged between inflation perception and purchase behavior, demonstrating that stronger perceptions of inflation led consumers to adopt more cautious and needs-based spending patterns. Respondents also expressed concerns about government interventions, noting issues related to subsidy removal, transparency, and inadequate agricultural support. The study concluded that Nigerians’ spending habits are deeply shaped by their experiences, social information sources, and economic interpretations, resulting in more deliberate and survival-oriented consumption patterns. It recommends that government agencies improve transparency, strengthen communication on economic measures, and expand targeted interventions that stabilize essential goods. Consumer education programs and community-based financial awareness campaigns are also advised to help households make informed spending decisions during inflationary periods.JEL Classification: E31 – Price Level; Inflation; Deflation; D12 – Consumer Economics: Empirical Analysis; D84 – Expectations and Perceptions; E21 – Consumption, Saving, and Household Behavior  Article visualizations
