“The Hope – the One Hope – is that Your Generation Will Prove Wiser and More Responsible than Mine:” Constructions of Guilt in a Selection of Disaster Texts for Young Adults
No full textThis paper explores a range of definitions of guilt, and argues that fiction for young adults which is set after a major disaster that has been caused by humans has surprisingly little emphasis on guilt. Focusing on Brother in the Land by Robert Swindells, Nuclear War Diary by James E. Sanford (Jr), The Last Children by Gudrun Pausewang, The Carbon Diaries 2015 by Saci Lloyd and its sequel, The Carbon Diaries 2017, and Days Like Thisby Alison Stewart, the paper argues that in post-nuclear texts for young adults the emphasis tends to be on the perceived responsibility of the young adult reader’s generation to work towards preventing the disaster from becoming reality, rather than on the guilt of the adult generation that caused the disaster. Confronting ecological futures: global environmental crises in contemporary survival quests for young adults
No full textThis paper examines representations of societal concern in the futuristic ecological disaster fi ctions of three British authors: Julie Bertagna (Exodus; Zenith), Jan Mark (Riding Tycho; Voyager) and Marcus Sedgwick (Floodland). The depicted refugee journeys in these futuristic worlds speak into a growing global disquiet that surrounds current historic events. Environmental crises that ground the emergent world orders of depicted future societies set the scene in each coming of age frame: each survival quest embeds social and cultural issues recognisable to contemporary audiences in futuristic representations of changed world orders, limited resources, and isolated communities. Authors resist the mythic frame of a traditional quest journey − a call to journey, the engagement with growth through a road of trials and then celebrations in a return to home territory: their conclusions offer limited resolutions, the struggle to survive entrenched as a linear path. Because authors link depictions of the refugee subject with environmental degradation, apocalyptic scenarios that signify the devastating consequences of global environmental crises provide an ecocritical platform from which each author situates a discourse of protest. No full textPackaging and trademarks as representation of everyday life and consumption as liberation. This text shows how the packages in Pija Lindenbaum When Owen's mom breathed fire (2005) represent the everyday life and the reality in contrast to his mother who turned into a dragon. The text also shows how consumption can represent liberation and personal growth in a few Swedish picture books of recent years. It also covers how a rejection of the commercial children's literature can effect our view of the packaging of children's book illustrations. Kropp i bevegelse i bildeboka Känner du Pippi Långstrump?
No full textIn Astrid Lindgren’s authorship, there are many bodies in motion, and one of her most movable and energetic characters is Pippi Longstocking. In the illustrated novels about Pippi (Lindgren and Nyman 1945, 1946, and 1948) there are relatively few pictures, and as a result, Lindgren's words carry most of the story. In the novels, her words have a greater functional load (Kress 2003, 46 ) than Nyman’s pictures. Naturally then, the words convey most of the information about Pippi and the other characters' movements. But how does the portrayal of bodies in motion change when Pippi is portrayed in picturebooks where the pictures have a lot more space, ie, a greater functional load than in the illustrated novels? The aim of this article is to study bodies in motion in Astrid Lindgren’s and Ingrid Nyman’s picturebook Do you Know Pippi Longstocking? (1947). ’’Kan verka skrämmande på små barn.’’ Våld, sex och historiebruk i tv-serien Trälarna
No full textThis article examines the television adaption and reception of Swedish youth novelist Sven Wernström’s series of historical youth novels called Trälarna (‘‘The Thralls’’) in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The book series as well as the Danish animated televisions series used a noticeable class perspective in order to make comparisons between the condition of slaves in medieval times and Swedish working class of the 19th and 20th centuries. In accordance with the novels, the television series therefore displays a strong moral historical perspective. The analysis in the article focuses mainly on the abundant use of violence and sex as political and pedagogical instruments to promote class consciousness among its child viewers. In contrast to the novels, the television series was able to create more explicit audiovisual images of violence and sex that, in fact, were censored by Swedish state television before it was aired on a child friendly timeslot.
