Bringing Our Folding Chair To The Table: Adopting Social Justice Through The Retention Of Black Women Educational Leaders
This Improvement Science Dissertation in Practice (ISDiP) qualitative research study aimed to investigate targeted interventions and resources designed to create empowering environments for Black women educational leaders who are impacted by the intersectionality of gender and race. Intersectionality creates additional challenges for these leaders who grapple with additional challenges as Black women which negatively impact their access to leadership positions and their ability to be retained long term in that position. The loss of Black women educational leaders has a detrimental impact on the leadership pipeline for Black women, negative impacts on marginalized students, and continues to widen the gap between the increasingly diverse student body population and the educators who educate them. The goal of this research is to create a culture of empowerment, self-advocacy, and connection to increase the likelihood of retention of Black women educational leaders through weekly affinity groups. Participants engaged in a 6-week affinity group intervention asynchronously that explored the aspects of the intervention which cultivated their empowerment, connection, and self-advocacy skills by engaging in discussion and reflection. Evaluating Multiple Oyster Reef Restoration Practices Across Space and Time in Coastal Rhode Island
Determining the efficacy of restoration practices is critical for enhancing and rebuilding degraded ecosystems. A fundamental question in marine restoration design is whether to employ active (e.g., using living plants or oysters that form the biogenic habitat) or passive (e.g., restoring the hydrology and sediment materials at the site) restoration strategies. Furthermore, the identity of sources used in restoring biogenic habitats could influence the effectiveness of restoration efforts. We present results from two independent experimental restoration efforts designed to explore the efficacy of these different approaches for the recovery of Crassostrea virginica (eastern oyster) reef habitat. Conducted from 2015–2020 in Rhode Island, USA, the restoration experiments compared 1) passive (unseeded shell) vs. active (seeded spat on shell) restoration methods in Ninigret Pond, and 2) restored reefs seeded with hatchery sourced vs. wild oyster lineages in Quonochontaug Pond. In Quonochontaug Pond, the hatchery-sourced line exhibited greater mortality than the wild lines. Restored reefs in both projects remained viable all four years post-restoration; however, low recruitment continues to limit the long-term sustainability of restored reefs in these Rhode Island systems. Natural mortality varied spatially within each coastal pond, ranging from 33–81% per year. Across both experiments, oyster mortality increased with rising temperature, salinity, and disease prevalence. Our results suggest that utilizing active restoration with spat spawned from multiple sources, including wild populations, may improve the success of oyster restoration. Future habitat restoration efforts should consider the environmental variability associated with restoration sites and the source of restoration species during project planning
Myocarditis and Pericarditis in Young Patients Following CampylobacterJejuni Enterocolitis Infection: A Systematic Review of Case Studies
Background
Campylobacter is known to be the leading cause of foodborne illness. Campylobacter jejuni, specifically, most commonly causes self-limiting enterocolitis, but infection can lead to extraintestinal manifestations, including rare yet severe cardiac complications, such as myocarditis and/or pericarditis. This review aims to determine whether a relationship exists between the timing of a positive stool culture and the overall clinical course in patients with Campylobacter jejuni-associated myocarditis and/or pericarditis. Methods
A systematic search was conducted using PubMed, MEDLINE, CINAHL Ultimate, Academic Search Premier, and Nursing and Allied Health Premium databases. A gray literature search was also performed. Covidence.org was used to screen, select, and extract data by two independent reviewers. Following a full-text evaluation, the quality of each study was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklist for Case Reports. Results
The search resulted in 434 records, of which 7 case reports met the inclusion criteria, each study including one patient. The average number of days from hospital presentation to obtaining a stool sample was 1.7. The average number of days from stool culture obtainment to clinical course improvement was 3.3, with four case studies reporting a range of 2–4 days. Conclusion
This systematic review raises awareness regarding the manifestations of Campylobacter jejuni, specifically the severe cardiac symptoms that may present in young individuals. Given the significant sequelae that can develop, providers must elicit a thorough history consisting of questions related to recent travel, food consumption, and gastrointestinal symptoms, especially among young individuals presenting with cardiac complaints

Feasibility and Safety of Early Post-COVID-19 High-Intensity Gait Training: A Pilot Study
Background: The feasibility and safety of rehabilitation interventions for individuals recovering from COVID-19 after the acute stage is not well understood. This pilot study aims to provide a preliminary investigation of the feasibility and safety of providing high-intensity gait training (HIT) with a targeted cardiovascular intensity of 70–85% of the age-predicted maximum heart rate (HRmax) for individuals undergoing rehabilitation post-COVID-19. Methods: Consecutive patients who were medically cleared for HIT were invited to participate in the study. Participants practiced walking in varied contexts (treadmill, overground, and stairs), aiming to spend as much time as possible within their target cardiovascular intensity zone during scheduled physical therapy (PT) sessions. Training characteristics and adverse events were collected to determine the feasibility and safety of HIT. The severity of adverse events was graded on a 1–5 scale according to the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events. Results: The participants (n = 20) took a mean of 2093 (±619) steps per PT session. Tissue-Specific RNA-Seq Defines Genes Governing Male Tail Tip Morphogenesis in C. Elegans
Caenorhabditis elegans males undergo sex-specific tail tip morphogenesis (TTM) under the control of the transcription factor DMD-3. To find genes regulated by DMD-3, We performed RNA-seq of laser-dissected tail tips. We identified 564 genes differentially expressed (DE) in wild-type males vs. dmd-3(-) males and hermaphrodites. The transcription profile of dmd-3(-) tail tips is similar to that in hermaphrodites. For validation, we analyzed transcriptional reporters for 49 genes and found male-specific or male-biased expression for 26 genes. Only 11 DE genes overlapped with genes found in a previous RNAi screen for defective TTM. GO enrichment analysis of DE genes finds upregulation of genes within the UPR (unfolded protein response) pathway and downregulation of genes involved in cuticle maintenance. Of the DE genes, 40 are transcription factors, indicating that the gene network downstream of DMD-3 is complex and potentially modular. We propose modules of genes that act together in TTM and are coregulated by DMD-3, among them the chondroitin synthesis pathway and the hypertonic stress response

Acute Ingestion of Dark Chocolate Fails to Affect Running Economy in Recreationally Trained Female Runners
Ingestion of dark chocolate (DC), a dietary source high in flavanols, may increase nitric oxide bioavailability. Elevating blood nitric oxide concentrations may augment metabolic efficiency by reducing the amount of oxygen or energy needed to perform a given task. Utilizing a crossover design, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of acute ingestion of DC on running economy (RE). Nineteen recreationally trained females (age: 20±1 years) volunteered for this investigation, with 16 completing all procedures (n = 16). Two-hours before RE assessment, participants consumed either 42.5 g of DC or an isocaloric amount of white chocolate (WC) (37.2 g) with a 34 mg caffeine pill. Participants ran on the treadmill at 2.68 m/s for 10-minutes to assess RE. However, only the last 5-minutes of the test were used for oxygen utilization (VO2), energy expenditure (EE), and respiratory exchange ratio (RER) determination via indirect calorimetry. Identical testing procedures were utilized for DC and WC treatments with a seven-day washout period separating trials. A repeated measure paired t-test was used to determine differences between dependent variables with statistical significance set at p \u3c 0.05. There were no significant mean differences (ps \u3e 0.05) between trials for VO2, EE, or RER. In conclusion, supplementation of DC 2-hours prior to steady state running had no effect on RE or fuel utilization compared to an isocaloric serving of WC in recreational female runners
