Pitt Library Manager
The Student-Athlete Success Center for D1 athletes at Sacred Heart University maintains a library for student-athletes to check out textbooks for free, making it easier for them to obtain course materials. Currently, the Pitt Library is managed through a paper-based system, resulting in a multitude of complications such as inaccurate tracking and missing inventory. The work-study platform will allow those working at the library to add and remove books, check books in and out of the library, and monitor and update the condition of the books. The student-athlete portion of the application allows student-athletes to virtually search the library for books and reserve individual books. All users of the system will be able to log in with their SHU credentials, bringing them to the necessary page to complete their desired task. These features, along with more diligent management of the physical library, will help remedy the current problems observed by the staff of the Student-Athlete Success Center
Should I Stay or Should I Go? Aggregate Behaviors in Asian Shore Crabs (Hemigrapsus sanguineus)
Asian shore crabs (Hemigrapsus sanguineus) are invasive along rocky, Northeast coastlines in the United States. Although these crabs often form aggregations between or under rocks to evade predators like birds and fish, they also exhibit cannibalistic behavior during periods of resource scarcity. Our project is part of a comprehensive study on Asian shore crab behavior and physiology when sharing intertidal refuges. We analyzed interactions between Asian shore crabs of varying sizes. During experimental trials, two crabs of different sizes were observed in an experimental arena for 10 minutes. We tracked their movements and proximity using Kinovea and quantified observed behaviors (e.g., aggression, resting, locomotion) using ethograms. Typically, the crabs were within the same half of the experimental arena and when they were in close they tended to display aggressive behaviors regardless of body size. Ultimately, this research, which aims to understand Asian shore crab behaviors, may aid in developing effective management strategies to control their populations and mitigate their ecological impacts in intertidal zones
Object Detection and Avoidance using RPLiDar A2M8 and Jetson Nano
This project aims to design a sensing system that will have the ability to detect objects that could interfere with a drone that is in the process of landing. The implementation of this system includes the use of RPLiDar A2 M8, Jetson Nano, and an Arduino. The system outputs a green light once the program determines it is safe to land and a red light when an object is detected. Notifying the drone of any obstacles is necessary for various reasons, such as military usage. Since this project was built with a two-dimensional sensor, there were issues when adding the third dimension for accurate object detection and avoidance. This issue was solved by adding a tilting mechanism that was 3D-printed with two motors to hold and move the sensor in a range from zero to sixty degrees. Current outcomes include successfully booting and scanning an area with the LiDar and plotting polar coordinates through a Python program. It is expected that with the 3D-printed tilting mechanism, the Python program will combine the X and Y planes from the 360-degree scan with the Z planes from the tilting to plot clusters in a polar graph to show when an object is detected. Depending on whether clusters are detected in the specified range of five feet, the red light or green light will flash
The Effect of Social Media Usage on Sacred Heart University Student-Athletes Stress Levels
Abstract: This research paper explores the relationship between social media usage and stress levels among student-athletes at Sacred Heart University. The paper argues that while technology has made college life easier, social media can have negative effects on mental health, particularly stress. The study uses a regression model to analyze data on stress levels and different variables. The data that has been collected is a cross- section data collected from a survey with 70 responses in a single-point in time. The results suggest that there is no direct effect between social media usage and stress levels among student-athletes, but that homework hours and GPA are significant predictors of stress levels. The paper concludes with policy recommendations and adds suggestions to the growing body of research on the relationship between technology and mental health

An Improvement Science Dissertation in Practice: Promoting Teacher Retention and Preventing Burnout among Elementary and Middle School Educators
This study aims to increase retention by providing teachers with strategies to decrease teacher burnout. Specifically, it sought to provide Tier I trauma-informed and restorative practice classroom management strategies through coaching cycles to reduce classroom disruptions and provide education on better managing challenging student behaviors. Based upon an intervention driven by weekly professional learning communities (PLC) sessions with the SEL coaching team and classroom-based coaching opportunities, this mixed-methods convergent design study utilized the improvement science framework. Quantitative data showed that although there were average decreases, there was no statistically significant difference in occupational exhaustion (EE) depersonalization (DP). Similarly, although there was a moderate increase in personal accomplishment (PA), there was no significant difference. Additionally, quantitative data showed an average increase in the strategies\u27 utilization. The qualitative data indicated teachers felt the coaching cycles were highly beneficial. Participants felt their understanding of the strategies improved over the 6 weeks, and having a coach helped validate how they implemented the strategies. Participants also felt the strategies positively impacted their students because their students were making better choices and expressing how they felt. Finally, participants felt these strategies helped with strengthening relationships with their students
Charting a Path From the Graduate QSEN Competencies to the New Essentials
Background: Graduate nursing programs were encouraged to map their curriculum to the Quality and Safety Education in Nursing (QSEN) graduate knowledge, skills, and attitudes (KSA) competency statements.
Purpose: Evaluation of the alignment between the 2009 QSEN graduate KSA competency statements and the 2021 American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Essentials advanced-level (Level 2) subcompetencies is needed to support curricular transition to competency-based education and the Essentials.
Methods: A team of 5 nursing education experts engaged in multiple rounds of review to seek consensus in determining alignment between the 2009 QSEN graduate KSA competency statements and the 2021 AACN advanced-level subcompetencies.
Results: A QSEN-AACN graduate crosswalk tool was created, which reflects alignment of 34% of the 196 graduate QSEN KSA competency statements to the AACN Essentials subcompetencies at the advanced level. 36% of the graduate QSEN KSA competency statements were found to align with the AACN subcompetencies at the entry level.
Conclusions: The 2009 QSEN graduate competencies are embedded within 2021 AACN Essentials at entry and advanced levels. However, a sizable shift toward entry level is noted, which represents an evolution in expectations for contemporary practice. This holds significance for graduate nursing faculty as they work to revise curriculum and assessments to meet new guidelines and standards for the profession
