Sentiments and Actions: The Divergent Impact of Immigration Attitudes on Words and Behaviors Indicating Social Cohesion
How do American attitudes towards immigrants influence sentiments and actions indicating social cohesion in a nation? Once viewed as the backbone of American society, attitudes towards immigrants in recent years seem to be shifting in the wake of policy changes. However, attitudinal factors such as exclusive conceptions of identity and culture are different from behaviors that are generally associated with accord within local communities and society at large. Understanding the relationship between attitudes towards immigrants and community building attitudes and actions is of acute importance to the United States as it will provide a framework for understanding the potential factors contributing to the nation’s weakening social fabric and ways in which it can be restrengthened. In this, I argue that less favorable attitudes towards immigrants are strongly correlated with more exclusive conceptions of American identity which are subsequently correlated with lower rates of community building behaviors. Using the American National Election Studies (ANES) dataset, I have created three indexes indicating social cohesion as defined by the respondent’s words and actions as well as their attitudes towards immigration. A series of regressions have revealed that attitudes towards immigration and immigrants themselves have no significant impact on one’s aptness to engage in community building behaviors. However, the data does reveal a correlation between these attitudes and one’s proclivity towards adopting more exclusive conceptions of American identity and the social cohesion which is indicated by such definitions
The Intersection of Autism and Poverty: Socioeconomic Status of Adults on the Spectrum
This study explores the relationship between Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and lower poverty status to assist in the understanding of socioeconomic challenges faced by adults on the spectrum. The purpose of this research is to investigate whether ASD is associated with an increased likelihood of experiencing poverty. Using an observational cross-sectional analysis of 2021 National Health Interview Child Survey data, we examined total combined family income and ASD diagnosis. The study included 5,134 participants of various races and socioeconomic statuses aged 2-17, 175 of which responded “Yes” to the question of ever receiving a diagnosis of ASD. The findings reveal a statistically significant positive correlation between ASD and poverty with a p-value of 0.024. These results could suggest systemic barriers, including limited access to education, employment, and various other support and treatment services. Future research should further focus specifically on adults diagnosed with ASD and include addressing policy reforms and improving access to the necessary support services needed for adults. Addressing these socioeconomic barriers is critical to fostering equity and enhancing the quality of life for individuals on the autism spectrum

Hot heads and hitchhikers: Hippocampal gene expression as a function of simulated heat waves and ectoparasites in nestling tree swallows
Climate change threatens species that cannot adapt to increasing temperatures. Understanding the physiological responses of endotherms to heat can help predict how species will fare in the face of global warming. However, we know relatively little about the physiological response to heat in endotherms, particularly in the brain. This study tests the impact of simulated heat waves on brain gene expression in tree swallow nestlings (Tachycineta bicolor). Tree swallows are altricial, endothermic songbirds common across a wide range of latitudes. We hypothesize that, within the hippocampus, a simulated heat wave will activate the immune system and self-maintenance mechanisms, increasing the expression of genes involved in these processes. Further, as ectoparasites can tax the immune system, we hypothesize that ectoparasite presence will correlate with higher expression of immune response genes. When nestlings were 12 days old, nest temperatures were experimentally increased by 4.4°C for 4 hours. After the trial, we extracted the hippocampi and measured the expression of genes associated with immune system activation and self-maintenance: pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNFa and IL1b), a cytokine receptor (IL6R), a heat shock protein (HSP90AA1), and a glucocorticoid receptor (NR3C1). Preliminary analyses suggest that the heat treatment did not affect gene expression, but that parasite presence was somewhat correlated with HSP expression. We also found strong, positive correlations among all genes of interest, indicating these genes are co-regulated. Better understanding the neurophysiological response to heat can inform us on the adaptability of endotherms in the face of climate change, with potential application to conservation efforts

As a team, we decided to make a tactical RPG game inspired by Fire Emblem and other older RPG games for the capstone project. This shows in our 2D-pixel graphics and combat system following a rock-paper-scissors style with three classes. Though our game simplifies a lot of typical RPG mechanics due to time constraints, there is still a focus on the main aspects of gameplay, such as strategy and difficulty of play. Our project aimed to create a basic tactical RPG system and expand on some weaker aspects of the genre. This interest in emulating and improving on work we enjoyed as a team informed our choices within the project and led to a unique gaming experience. Our poster shows many of the original concepts and artwork, as well as the link to the alpha demo of our game
Black, Asian, and First-Generation Students Report Fewer Opportunities to Belong in College
A sense of belonging in college is essential for students’ academic success, yet opportunities to belong may be inequitable along racial-ethnic and social class lines. We asked two questions: (1) How do belonging opportunities vary within and across (a) higher education institutions and (b) racial-ethnic and social-class groups? (2) What predicts opportunities for belonging? We gathered data from a multi-site randomized controlled trial of a social-belonging intervention at 22 U.S. colleges and analyzed 15,143 control-group students’ belonging opportunities. Students were classified into one of 374 local-identity groups (LIGs) based on their race-ethnicity, first-generation status, cohort, and college. We measured their belonging and collected data on institutional factors, identified through a literature review, that we expected to predict belonging opportunities: (1) in-group representation, (2) inclusive campus cultures, (3) opportunities for strong relationships, and (4) opportunities for productive learning. We found that each college fostered belonging for some groups, however none did for all. White (97%), Hispanic/Latinx (90%), and continuing-generation (70%) LIGs had greater belonging opportunities than Black (28%), Asian (22%), and first-generation (57%) LIGs. As expected, greater in-group representation, inclusivity, opportunities to build strong relationships, and opportunities for productive learning were all associated with greater belonging
What impact does AI have on American elections?
This paper explores how artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping the concept and practice of power in the context of voting in the United States. AI has allowed campaigns and institutions to communicate more efficiently, analyze voter behavior, and manage elections with greater precision. However, this same technology introduces major risks. These include the manipulation of public opinion, misinformation, cybersecurity threats, and unequal access to political influence. Through real-world examples and expert insights, this paper examines how AI impacts who holds power, how it is exercised, and what that means for democracy in the U.S. It draws on Robert Dahl’s influential theory that “A has power over B to the extent that he can get B to do something that B would not otherwise do” (Dahl, 1957), to examine how AI empowers certain actors to influence voters’ behavior. This analysis begins by exploring traditional ideas of power, continues with real-world election examples like the Cambridge Analytica scandal, and concludes by considering legislative responses and digital literacy solutions to curb AI’s potential harms
