Efficacy of Publicly Accessible Tourniquets: A Systematic Review of Layperson Performance Utilizing Simulation Models
Background: A large portion of preventable deaths is a result of uncontrolled bleeding due to a delay in medical intervention. While publicly accessible tourniquets raise the concern of incorrect application by laypeople, tourniquets have proven efficacy and can be effectively applied by bystanders. This systematic review aims to identify if tourniquets applied by laypeople using a basic manikin or tourniquet trainer extremity with little to no training can effectively control bleeding.
Methods: The authors used EBSCOHost to simultaneously search the following databases: Cumulated Index in Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) Ultimate, Academic Search Premier, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, and Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE) with Full Text. Boolean search strategy included tourniquet AND (layperson OR laypeople) AND ((bleeding AND control) OR (hemorrhage AND control) OR stop the bleed ) NOT surgery. The search was limited to January 1, 2013, to August 31, 2023. Inclusion criteria were layperson participants in peer-reviewed randomized controlled or clinical trials, available in English, that assessed at least one outcome measure related to the efficacy of tourniquet application in a simulated context. Articles including duplicate data and those regarding tourniquet use/efficacy in settings other than prehospital care or bleeding control were excluded. Two independent reviewers selected studies according to prespecified inclusion and exclusion criteria. Risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane RoB 2 tool.
Results: The initial search identified 83 studies, with 10 retained for inclusion in this review. Two different windlass rod tourniquets and one ratcheting strap tourniquet performed the best in terms of successful application by laypeople. Completing formal bleeding control training increased the average application success rate compared to no prior training. The Layperson Audiovisual Assist Tourniquet was the only audiovisual point-of-care aid that significantly increased the rate of successful applications. Just-in-Time visual cards also increased success rates significantly, showing comparable benefits to manufacturer instructions.
Conclusion: Although some laypeople can successfully place tourniquets without prior training, successful placement rates can be improved with point-of-care aids and formal bleeding control training using a basic manikin or tourniquet trainer extremity
From Guided to Guiding: Optimizing Note-Taking Scaffolds with Universal Design for Learning
Improving learning in postsecondary mathematics courses is of significant importance to reduce barriers to undergraduate degree completion. This article shares development work identifying ways that Universal Design for Learning (UDL), a framework of considerations for reducing barriers to learning, can improve postsecondary mathematics instructors\u27 usage of note-taking scaffolds called guided notes. We discuss opportunities for mathematics instructors to improve learner agency by transforming guided notes into an enhanced, UDL-aligned version called guiding notes. Guiding notes provide structure while maintaining flexibility to respond to diverse learner needs by integrating student-centered pedagogies that optimize students\u27 access to content, opportunities for support, and executive functioning
Words and Rituals for the Dead: Hadrian Among Hellenic Heroes
Hadrian’s engagement with the Greek past extended beyond mere admiration — he actively participated in its commemoration through words and rituals. This paper explores Hadrian’s systematic veneration of the tombs of long-deceased Hellenic figures, a practice unparalleled among Roman emperors. Unlike his predecessors, who merely visited or acknowledged such sites, Hadrian composed sepulchral epigrams and performed ritual acts at their gravesites, reinforcing a connection between Rome and the Hellenic past. By analyzing epigraphic, literary, and archaeological evidence, this study examines the political, cultural, and personal motivations behind Hadrian’s actions. It argues that his engagement with these monuments and sites was a deliberate strategy to position himself within the continuum of Hellenic heroic tradition, thereby legitimizing his rule and reinforcing his vision of a Hellenized Roman Empire. Ultimately, Hadrian’s words and rituals for the dead functioned as acts of imperial self-fashioning, further solidifying his legacy in both life and death
Using Global Positioning Systems to Explore Food Insecurity Among Older Adults Living With HIV, With and Without Criminal Justice Involvement
This study assessed the feasibility and acceptability of using global positioning systems (GPS) to evaluate food insecurity among older people living with HIV (PLWH), including those with criminal justice involvement. Approximately 25 PLWH participants were recruited via community engagement from September 2023 to January 2024. Bivariate analyses identified demographic characteristics, and chi-square tests investigated the association between arrest/incarceration history and food security. Spatial analysis examined patterns, calculated distances traveled and determined the frequency of visits to specific locations over seven days. Around 20.8% (n = 5) of participants had a CD4 count of ≤299 cells/mm³, indicating possible advanced HIV status. Food insecurity was higher among participants with lower education levels (61.5%; n = 8) and incomes ≤$20,000 annually (69.2%; n = 9). Those with arrest histories had slightly higher food insecurity rates (54.5%; n = 6) compared to those never arrested (45.5%; n = 5), though differences were not statistically significant. Most participants successfully charged and carried their GPS devices and retained food receipts. GPS compliance was higher at the start and middle of the study period but declined toward the end. Findings support that integrating geospatial technology is both feasible and acceptable for assessing food insecurity among older PLWH

Artificial Intelligence Robotic Arm for Teaching American Sign Language
This project aims to develop a robotic arm that demonstrates American Sign Language (ASL) letters. The system features a custom-designed 3D-printed forearm with thirteen servo motors that allow for various wrist and finger movements, enhancing the dexterity of the arm. To support ASL letter recognition, a dataset was created consisting of letters from A to I, captured against seventeen different colored backgrounds with five to seven variations per letter. A convolutional neural network (CNN) model was then developed using TensorFlow, Keras, and scikit-learn to process the input images and classify them into corresponding ASL letters. The main Python program utilizes OpenCV and MediaPipe to analyze webcam footage. Users input the desired letter they want to learn, prompting the robotic arm to perform the corresponding gesture. The program then monitors the user’s replication of the arm’s movement through the webcam. It provides positive feedback if the user’s hand position matches the arm’s gesture correctly or prompts the user to try again if they did it incorrectly. This system overcomes previous limitations by allowing the arm to do various movements, such as radial adduction and abduction, accurately demonstrating the ASL letter formation. The expected outcomes include increasing the number of images. Overall, this abstract seeks to provide a comprehensive understanding of the development of an AI-driven robotic arm for teaching ASL, using advanced image processing techniques
