    Wander/Elopement Risk Assessment and Protocol for Veterans

    Wandering and elopement are significant safety concerns for veterans in healthcare settings, particularly those with conditions such as traumatic brain injuries (TBI), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), dementia, and sleep disorders. These factors increase the risk of falls, injuries, and exposure to infections. During our capstone clinical experience, we observed a high incidence of patients attempting to leave the unit or engaging in wandering behaviors. As a result, we came up with the idea to create a veteran-specific wander/elopement risk assessment protocol to ensure early identification of at-risk patients and the implementation of appropriate interventions. The assessment will categorize patients based on their risk level. From there, nurses will use specific interventions to help them based on the risk level. This project seeks to enhance patient safety and reduce the incidence of elopement/wandering-related adverse events

    Augmentative and Alternative Communication and Quality of Life Across a Variety of Communication Disorders and Impairments

    This literature review examines the impact of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices on the quality of life of individuals with various communication disorders. AAC encompasses a range of technologies and methods that facilitate communication without the necessity of verbal speech, improving self-expression and social interaction for users. This investigation highlights the spectrum of AAC devices, ranging from low-tech options like printed icons to sophisticated high-tech offerings such as tablet applications and eye-tracking technology. Through a comprehensive literature review utilizing specific search terms related to AAC and quality of life, the research identifies a significant positive correlation between AAC usage and improvements in mental well-being and overall quality of life across diverse populations. Users reported enhanced happiness, reduced anxiety and depression levels, and greater participation in social activities following the implementation of AAC. The findings underscore the importance of personalized AAC device selection based on individual capabilities and preferences to maximize impact. These results advocate for increased accessibility and customization of AAC technologies to support the quality of life for those with communication impairments

    Spartina alterniflora Resilience and Warming Impacts on Long Island Sound Marshes

    Abstract: Coastal marshes along the Long Island Sound play a clinical role in reducing erosion, mitigating climate change impacts, and sequestering carbon. This study investigates the resilience of Spartina species, crucial to marsh stabilization, by comparing northern, southern, and mixed-source plants under environmental stressors like temperature fluctuations, sea level rise, and nutrient variations. Field experiments have assessed differences in plant height, shoot density, and flowering frequency among these sources. Results have shown that northern plants performed better than southern and mixed populations in key traits relevant to marsh resilience. Northern populations have shown a significantly higher shoot density than both mixed and southern plant sources (ANOVA, p \u3c .001), this proposes a greater capacity for vegetative spread and stabilization. Further, flowering frequency was significantly lower in southern sources compared to both mixed and northern sources (Kruskal–Wallis, p \u3c .001), which shows potential reproductive disadvantages in southern populations at this site. Experimental warming treatments were performed, although no significant effects on flowering or growth were observed in either northern or mixed-source plants, which reinforces the importance of plant source over warming effects. These findings have shown that northern Spartina populations are better adapted to conditions at this site, exhibiting superior growth and flowering patterns that may strengthen marsh stability and resilience. This study emphasizes the importance of selecting suitable plant sources for restoration projects, which provides a framework for incorporating ecological adaptability into coastal conservation strategies in the face of climate change

    Trauma Informed Care: Guiding Principles to Reduce Medical Trauma and Increase Patient Trust in Healthcare Professionals

    Medical trauma has a profound negative impact on patients and their families, physiologically and psychologically. Trauma does not discriminate, it affects people of all genders, races, ethnicities, and backgrounds. Trauma informed care is an intervention that can reduce the risk of medical trauma occurring or retraumatization from happening.The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration defines trauma informed care as, “an organizational structure and treatment framework that involves understanding, recognizing, and responding to the effects of all types of trauma”. In order to actually provide care that abides by a trauma informed approach, six leading principles are followed. These six principles are safety, trustworthiness and transparency, peer support, collaboration and mutuality, empowerment of voice and choice, and finally cultural, historical, and gender issues. Trauma informed care has proven to better quality improvement outcomes for both patients and healthcare organizations. On the patient side, trauma informed care has been proven to increase trust in healthcare professionals and the healthcare system, increase adherence to treatment plans, improve satisfaction with the care received, and improve overall health outcomes. On the hospital side, trauma informed care has been proven to decrease costs and also increase job satisfaction of staff

    Evidence-Based Intervention for The Prevention of Pressure Ulcers

    A pressure ulcer or a pressure injury is a localized skin injury caused by excessive pressure and possibly shearing forces on the skin over bony prominences. Pressure injuries result in tissue death and ischemia and can pose a risk for infection and severe discomfort. They result in prolonged hospital stays, which can lead to more complications for a patient’s health and increased healthcare cost to both the patient and facility. Pressure injuries are common but avoidable injuries and there has been many studies and interventions introduced to help try to reduce the incidence of them (Meaume et al., 2021). It has been found through research that while interventions such as nutrition and and APMOs are effective and any technique to prevent skin breakdown is beneficial, frontline defense like barrier cream and turning and repositioning are the most effective at preventing skin breakdown
