    Twelve species of Crustacea of the family Palicidae were collected from Indonesian waters. Together with two species from the Philippines and type specimens of Crossotonotus compressipes A. Milne Edwards, 18 73, are studied and Manella spinipes is used for comparison. Two new subfamilies, four new genera, and six new species are described and the type of Crossotonotus compressipes has been designated

    BIODIVERSITY OF HYDROCARBON-PRODUCING MICROALGAE FROM OIL CONTAMINATED IN COASTAL ZONE OF BATAM ISLAND

    Addressing to the environmental and energy crises in Indonesia, the new alternative of green-economic-energy sources is required. In this study marine microalgae were isolated from oil-polluted coastal zone in Batam Island for alternative energy sources. The research was carried out by collecting the sea water samples from several peninsulas of Batam Island. The abundance of microalgal diversity was observed. The isolation was done by capillary micropipette technique. The method of specific screening for hydrocarbon-producing microalgae was done using selected media, CO2 rate and light intensity period treatments. The results showed that the Cyanobacteria and diatom occupied the Batam's coastal waters. From the isolated samples, 11 strains positively deposit the hydrocarbon in their cells. Further study for determining the isolates and their properties is still in progress

    THE DISTRIBUTION OF HEAVY METALS IN SEDIMENT OF JAKARTA BAY

    A survey on heavy metal content in seawater and sediment was conducted in Jakarta Bay in May and October 2004. There is indication of significant presence of heavy metal in sediment. The contents of heavy metals in sediment at the western part of Jakarta Bay varied as follows: Pb = 10.67-35.19 ppm, Cd = 0.04-0.30 ppm, Cu = 7.41-74.70 ppm, Zn = 76.99-497.53 ppm and Ni = 4.58-18.75 ppm. At the central part of Jakarta Bay, they varied as Pb = 6.69-64.44 ppm, Cd = 0.01-0.442 ppm, Cu = 1.19-40.60 ppm, Zn = 53.87-275.68 ppm and Ni = 4.09-11.88 ppm and at the eastern of Jakarta Bay, Pb content varied between 3.64 and 43.97 ppm, Cd = <0.001-0.320 ppm, Cu = 0.82-36.47 ppm, Zn = 78.27-230.68 ppm and Ni = 4.58-11.02 ppm. The concentration of Pb in May and of Cu in Octobei 2004 were found higher near the coast and decreases towards the open sea, which is commonly found in front of estuary such Angke and Cengkareng Drain. The concentration of Cd in Jakarta Bay was constant at all stations and does not show any correlation with the distance of station and estuary.     Experiment on Holothuria atra provided evidence that asexual reproduction by fission was possible to be stimulated at laboratory. The success of the experiment was determined based on the high survival of stimulated individuals that grew into intact. After being tightened, induced individuals divided into anterior- and posteriorend individuals. During regenerating into intact individuals, the body weight decreased to relatively minimum weight. Developing of new tentacles in posterior-end individuals and anal aperture in anterior-end individuals required 7-8 weeks after fission. These indicators may lead to anatomical recovery which may be a sign of feeding necessity

    The diversity and community structure of macroalgae at Koh Taen, Haad Khanom-Mu Koh Tale Tai, marine National Park, Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, Thailand were investigated from 1st- 5th October 2005 (preliminary survey). Out of a total of 41 species: 15 species each of green and red algae, 9 species of brown algae and 2 species of blue green algae were found. In the area, subsequently four sites were established for monitoring. Quadrat sampling was employed to assess the abundance of macroalgae. In total sixty quadrats were monitored each month from October 2005 to April 2007. We report the variations of diversity and abundance of macroalgae among sites and seasons and speculate about what might cause such variations

    Growth is one of the important events in the life history of an organism beside reproduction. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the possibility of using the operculum to determine the growth pattern of tropical neritids (Nerita undata). Shell and operculum dimension were measured using a vernier caliper to the nearest 0.01mm. The results showed that there was a relationship between operculum dimensions (length and width) and shell, and it was also shown allometric growth pattern. The study also indicated the relationship between operculum dimension and the shell parameters

    GROWTH RESPONSES OF FIVE NON TOXIC ALEXANDRIUM SPECIES (DINOPHYCEAE) TO TEMPERATURE AND SALINITY

    Growth response of five clonal cultures of Alexandrium obtained from tropical and temperate waters were examined. Experiments were carried out in eighteen variable temperature-salinity conditions (temperatures of 15 °C, 20°C, and 25°C; salinities between 5 to 30 psu) under constant illumination of 150 ± 10.0 Amol m-2 s-' at 15:9 light:dark photo-cycle. Our results showed optimum growth of all Alexandrium species at 20 - 25°C. The salinity range for optimum growth however varied among the species. Growth rates of A. eine, A. insuetum, and A. fraterculus (0.28 — 0.37 day') were higher than those of A. leei and A. pseudogoniaulax under the same culture conditions (0.14 —0.22 day-'). The three temperate species showed positive growth at suboptimum temperature, 15°C, but the tropical species did not grow and died off. Salinity tolerance of the five species in decreasing order was A. pseudogoniaulax > A. leei > A. insuetum > A. affine > A. fraterculus. Results of the present study showed vast variations in salinity tolerance among the Alexandrium species regardless the geographical origins. Adaptation of the temperate species at higher temperature indicated that the species might proliferate in warm tropical waters

    To investigate the distribution of Heterocapsa including a harmful species H. circularisquama, cells were surveyed in three Vietnamese coasts, Ha Long Bay, Hue and Phu Quoc Island in 2006. Cells of Heterocapsa were detected from Lang Co Lagoon and adjacent coast in Hue. Cell of the species possesses thecal plates corresponding to the typical of Heterocapsa. Under TEM, body scales approximately 500 nm in diameter are observed. The scale structure is similar to that of H. illdefina, however, number of the marginal spine is different. We concluded it is an undescribed Heterocapsa species possessing a new body scale ultrastructure

    Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) incidences in Indonesian waters were increasingly occurred from time to time. Extensive and continous studies in this field are needed to be done in more areas in the country. This objective of this present survey were to determine the occurrence of potential toxic and harmful marine microalgae in Lombok, to reveal the diversity of marine microalgae found in the area, and to give some information on the occurrence of HAB phytoplankton in Lombok island. Plankton samples were taken from six stations in Lembar bay, Lombok on February, 2007. This survey found 23 marine microalgae species and two of those were potentially harmful and toxic, namely Dinophysis caudata and Gymnodinium catenatum. Four species, such as Ceratium spp, Dinophysis miles, Prorocentrum gracile, and P micans, were noted to be harmful though so far no report on adverse effect caused by these microalgae in the area. Diatom Chaetoceros spp were the most abundant phytoplankton in almost all of the sampling areas and followed by Ceratium furca and Protoperidinium sp

    ELASMOBRANCH DIVERSITY OF KALIMANTAN WATERS

    A total of 2,310 individuals of elasmobranch fishes consisting of 60 species from 13 families were recorded from survey trips in Kalimantan waters. Six fish landing sites and markets in four provinces of Kalimantan were visited from September 2005 to November 2006. Some new records, endemic and new species were gathered during the surveys. Rays of Dasyatid family were the most common elasmobranch species occurring in this area. Himantura gerrardi, H. uarnak and H. uarnacoides (Dasyatidae) were the most common rays, whereas Chiloscyllium punctatum (Hemiscyllidae), Hemigaleus microstoma (Hemigaleidae), Carcharhinus amblyrhynchoides and C. dussumieri (Carcharhinidae) were the most common sharks recorded during this study. Some endemic and rare species were also recorded including Himantura lobistoma, H. pastinacoides, Pastinachus solocirostris (Dasyatidae) and Glyphis sp. (Carcharhinidae)
