And, it can be a problem, particularly for those who live in developing countries, where their financial capability is low to buy the proprietary programs. R may provide the solution to this obstacle. Since it is an open source software, which can be installed on major operating systems. In addition, it is highly maintained by R Core Team, which ensures that the program and its packages work well on across platforms. The increase usage of R, especially in universities is not only a proof that the program can be relied on, but it is also a guarantee that the software will continue developing.     TWO NEW RECORDS OF ANTHIINE FISHES GENUS PLECTRANTHIAS (PERCIFORMES: SERRANIDAE) FROM INDONESIA

    Three specimens of Plectranthias retrofasciatus Fourmanoir and Randall, 1979 and one specimen of P. randalli Fourmanoir and Rivaton, 1980 were collected by first author from fish market, Bitung, North Sulawesi on June and September 2010. The specimens were deposited at LBRC-F, the reference collection of LIPI Bitung, Technical Implementation Unit for Marine Biota Conservation, Research Centre for Oceanography, Indonesian Institute of Sciences, Bitung, Indonesia. Plectranthias retrofasciatus is closely related to P. megalophthalmus and P. knappi, in sharing some morphological characters as snout length and interorbital width, while P. randalli differs to other species by having a moderate deep body proportion. Initially these species known only from New Caledonia for P. retrofasciatus and Chesterfield Islands and southern Taiwan for P. randalli respectively.     STATUS OF CORAL REEFS IN THE LEMBEH STRAITS AND ADJACENT WATER, NORTH SULAWESI

    Lembeh reefs and its water surrounding are among the richest and most diverse in marine biota in Indonesia. The biota and reefs in this area have an important contribution to the province’s economy in the form of tourisms and fishery activities. An inventory using line intercept transect and free collection on the coral diversity has been conducted in four different locations showed that live coral cover ranging from 12.2–60.7% while sand rubble ranged from 4.67 to 78.67%. Among the life form categories, sponge dominated other biota with 0.47–21.97% coverage. Macro algae and turf algae cover were low at all sites, with average less than 2.07%. A total of 193 corals species belonging to 68 genera were recognized from this area. The differences among sites may be consequences of water quality, habitat variability and condition of the land base activities. Water turbidity in the coastal area of Kema was high due to the effects of water discharge from river mouth. Further, poor land management, development of port and human settlement leading to sedimentation, water pollution and poor water quality, remain the primary causes of reefs declines. Busy harbor and local sea transportation will be the major cause of coral reef degradation in the near future. There is a need to increase awareness of local people about the important of coral reefs and to develop management and conservation efforts involving scientists, academe and tourist operators. In addition, it is a need to strengthen the capabilities and capacities of institutions that concern reef management and enforce legislation.Â

    CONDITION AND SPATIAL DISTRIBUTION OF STONY CORAL IN BUNGURAN, SOUTHWEST NATUNA ISLANDS, INDONESIA

    Bunguran waters is part of Natuna waters consisting of several small islands located in the southern part of South China Sea, between Sumatera and Kalimantan Island. This paper reported results of a study on spatial distribution and condition of coral reefs and other biota in Bunguran waters,i.e. percentage cover and diversity of coral species. The observation was conducted using line intercept transect (LIT) on eight stations distributed in Salor Island, Sedanau Island, Komang Island, Kumbik Island, Depeh Strait, Sabangmawang Island, Pulau Tiga Village and Tekolampak Cape. The results showed that the reef type of Bunguran were mostly fringing reef dominated by Porites cylindrica, P. lutea and P. rus. Porites spp. were evenly distributed in all location observed. A total of 115 coral species belonging to 16 genera were found and the percentage of living coral cover ranged from 43.20 to 63.53 %. Coral cover reached their maximum at 10–15 meter depth and decreased rapidly coincident with the increasing depth. In general, the condition of coral cover was in “good” category with the average percentage living cover of coral was estimated 51.38%

    TIDE AND TIDAL CURRENT IN THE BALI STRAIT, INDONESIA

    Tide and tidal current model of the Bali Strait in Indonesia is produced by using a Coupled Hydrodynamical-Ecological Model for Regional and Shelf Seas (COHERENS). With its resolutions in the horizontal (500meters) and the vertical (4layers), the model well reproduces the four major tidal constituents, namely M2, S2, K1, and O1 tides, and their currents. Furthermore the model is used to investigate the tide-induced residual flow and tidal front in the Bali Strait. As a results, the tide-induced residual flow in the Bali Strait during the spring tide on May 16th in 2010 can be attributed to the variation of the strength of two eddies. The first one is the clockwise circulation in the shallow area at the wide part of the strait, while the second one is the small clockwise circulation in the south of the narrow strait. On the other hand, as suggestion from Simpson and Hunter (1974), the tidal front is determined by the value of log(H/U3) (where is the water depth in meters and the amplitude oftidal current amplitude in ms-1). The front detected by the image of sea surface temperature distribution from the satellite corresponds with the contour log(H/U3) of 6.5

    DIVERSITY OF STONY CORALS IN BANGGAI WATER

    Banggai waters, located in Central Sulawesi Province, is part of the world’s coral triangle area which is well–known to have the highest diversity on stony corals (Scleractinia). A research on stony corals has been carried out at 9 study sites between June–July 2011, practicing line transect methods and free collection in order to determine the recent condition and diversity of the given coral group. The average of live corals coverage was recorded at 46%(ranging between 24–77%), and categorized as fair condition. The number of coral species found was 194, distributed in 54 genera. The Banggai waters condition was considered good and potential to sustain the corals’growth. Even though so, in several particular areas, there were still threats on coral reefs

    PUBLIC AWARENESS ON HARMFUL ALGAL BLOOM (HAB) IN LAMPUNG BAY

    Harmful algal blooms (HABs) cause various problems, such as water quality degradation, fauna mass mortality and impairment of human health. Water quality monitoring in Lampung Bay has been conducted by Lampung Marine Aquaculture Office (BBL) of the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries since 1994. Occurrence of Pyrodinium bahamense var. compressum (Pbc), a causative organism of paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP), has been recorded but threats caused by HABs have never been reported. A study aimed to know the level of public knowledge and awareness about HABs in Lampung Bay has been conducted. The components of group respondents consisted oflocal governments, academics and coastal communities. Awareness from each component was examined includinggeneral HAB knowledge, HAB impact to the community, HAB occurence and local knowledge of HAB. Data of HAB knowledge were collected through questionnaire and focus group  discussion. The result showed that 40.5% of respondents had knowledge of HABs phenomena and 51.3% respondents only know signs or indicators of HAB occurrence, while only 1.4% respondents had knowledge of local HAB occurences. The direct impact of HABs to the community was not commonly known by the respondents. Only a few cases of poisoning after eating seafood were reported. It can be concluded that there was lack of public knowledge and awareness on HABs in LampungBay. Intensive public awareness programs about HABs should be conducted in order to reduce risk towards HABs in Lampung Bay

    MERCURY AND ARSENIC CONTENT IN SEAFOOD SAMPLES FROM THE JAKARTA FISHING PORT, INDONESIA

    Mercury and arsenic are considered to be among the most toxic metals and have been associated with serious adverse health effects. These two trace metals and other contaminants that are found in fish products are therefore of public concern for food-safety reason.  Hence, we selected three marine species to study i.e., yellow fin tuna, marlin and green mussels because of their economic values in the international and local markets. The objective of our study was to determine the arsenic and mercury content in these three marine species as a first step in monitoring metal content in seafood products.  The tissue samples of tuna and marlin were collected from the Jakarta fishing port, while the green mussels was collected from aqua-culture sites in Jakarta Bay.  The metal content was determined by ICP-MS and validated using CRM DORM-2 and DORM-3. The speciation of arsenic (organic and inorganic forms) was determined using HPLC-ICPMS.All measurements were based on dry weight samples. The result showed that the mercury concentration in yellow-fin tuna, marlin and green mussel samples was 0.68 ± 0.08 mg kg-1, 0.56 ± 0.06 mg kg-1 and 1.51 ± 0.10 mg kg-1, respectively. The total arsenic concentration in yellow-fin tuna, marlin and green mussel samples was 3.47 ± 0.21 mg kg-1, 2.71 ± 0.18 mg kg-1, and 6.77 ± 0.32 mg kg-1, respectively.  The mercury content in the fish tissue was below the maximum allowable concentration (National Standard of Indonesia 1.0 mg kg-1), except for the green mussels.  For total arsenic concentration, all the samples were above the national standard concentration (1.0 mg kg-1). The organic arsenic species arsenobetain (AB) found in tuna and marlin fish samples was not toxic. Inorganic and organic arsenic was found in the green mussel samples. Our results suggest that there is a need to establish a national program to regularly monitor the content of selected trace metals in fishery products

    LIST OF MARINE ISOPODS RECORDED FROM INDONESIAN WATERS

    A list of marine isopods recorded from Indonesia has been compiled from the literature published between 1857 and 2012 as well as from Museum Zoologicum Bogoriense’s collections and current expeditions. To date, 225 marine species from 97 genera and 19 families have been recorded from Indonesia with two parasitic families Cymothoidae and Bopyridae showing the largest number of species: 63 and 41, respectively. As for the sampling sites, waters surrounding Java, Maluku and Sulawesi have been investigated most intensively with 55, 51, and 40records, respectively. The most comprehensive publication of marine isopods in Indonesia has been that by Nierstrasz (1931). In terms of role as bioindicators, Sphaeroma and Dynamenella have been discovered to survive in polluted waters in Jakarta Bay, suggesting their potential use as bioindicators of water pollution. Future research on basic taxonomy of isopods in Indonesia as well as their ecological functions are recommended

    DISTRIBUTION OF METALS IN CISANGGARUNG ESTUARY SEDIMENT, WEST JAVA, INDONESIA

    Volcanic activities have infl uenced the Cisanggarung estuary in western Cirebon Regency, altering metal concentrations in the bottom sediment. Observation of metal content in the ocean there was carried out in August 2009. Sediment samples were collected at 16 stations along the Cisanggarung coastline. The aim of this work was to determine the spatial distribution of Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn in the sediment of the Cisanggarung estuary. Sediment was destructed using 3 acids: nitric acid, chloride acid and peroxide acid, which was then analyzed by Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry based on the US EPA 3050b method. The highest concentrations of Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn in the sediment were 0.73 mg/kg dry weight, 31.4 mg/kg dry weight, 23.9 mg/kg dry weight and 143 mg/kg dry weight, respectively. The metals in the sediment had accumulated near the shoreline, up to fi ve kilometers away from the river mouth, indicating that terrestrial area and sediment fractions infl uenced their distribution
