Perception of Students about the Effectiveness of the Flipped Classroom and Technological Tools in the Learning of Mathematics
No full textThis quantitative research analyses the perception of students about the use of flipped classroom and technological tools in the functions unit considering the machine learning algorithms on linear regression, a decision tree and neural networks. This research proposes consulting YouTube videos about functions and use of the Desmos application in the teaching-learning process. The results of the linear regression indicate that the consultation with YouTube videos before the class and use of the Desmos application collaboratively during the class, and individually after the class, positively influence the teaching-learning process on the functions. Likewise, the decision tree identifies three predictive models. The neural network establishes how the activities of this pedagogical model influence the teaching-learning process. The implications of this research suggest that universities update their courses and carry out creative school activities outside and inside the classroom through flipped classroom. Finally, the flipped classroom facilitates the active role of the students during the learning process, promotes the construction of new educational virtual spaces and allows for improving the educational process through the incorporation of technological tools before, after and during face-to-face sessions
Collaborative Research Writing in the New Normal: Students’ Views, Challenges, Coping Strategies, and Takeaways
No full textThe ‘new normal’ setup of education posed challenges on courses requiring learners’ collaboration. Despite the proven advantages of collaborative writing, several challenges still confront the learners which may affect the quality of their output. Collaboration per se is already a challenge for learners in face-to-face classes, more so in online distance learning. Thus, this study explored the views, challenges, coping strategies, and takeaways of senior high school students in collaborative research writing in the ‘new normal.’ Thirty (30) reflective essays written by senior high school students from three (3) academic strands, namely Humanities and Social Sciences, General Academic, and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics were analysed. Ten (10) sample essays from each strand were selected through Critical Case Sampling. Findings revealed that students view collaborative research writing in general as easy, while some see it as difficult. The students met challenges in research technicalities, communication, and collaboration. Varied coping strategies were identified, such as having a positive mindset, being patient, considerate and determined, seeking help from others, maintaining proper communication and collaboration, seeking spiritual guidance, and taking a break. Ultimately, the takeaways of the students were not limited to academics or cognitive aspects—they were also able to gain important values

The curriculum at the schooling level is slow to change, but as students will learn, climate change is a very real and very important challenge – perhaps the MOST important challenge. As an open scholar and a young adult, targeted students have a vested interest in seeking to understand and mitigate the impact of climate change, since it affects their present and also their future. As open scholars, they also get to choose what they want to learn, when they want to learn and how they want to learn. They can work through the course content alone or with others with whom they can share ideas. They can work entirely offline or entirely online or in blended mode if their local open school provides such an option
