Security and Privacy Challenges in the Internet of Things

    Get PDF
The future Internet of Things as an intelligent collaboration of miniaturized sensors poses new challenges to security and end-user privacy. The ITU has identified that the protection of data and privacy of users is one of the key challenges in the Internet of Things [Int05]: lack of confidence about privacy will result in decreased adoption among users and therefore is one of the driving factors in the success of the Internet of Things. This paper gives an overview, categorization, and analysis of security and privacy challenges in the Internet of Things

Code Generation with the Model Transformation of Visual Behavior Models

    Get PDF
There exist numerous techniques to define the abstract and the concrete syntax of metamodeled languages. However, only a few solutions are available to describe the dynamic behavior (animation) of visual languages. The aim of our research is to provide visual modeling techniques to define the dynamic behavior of the languages. Previously, we have created languages to describe animation. In this paper, we describe how these models can be processed by model transformation techniques. We elaborate the main steps of the transformation and show the details as well. We use graph rewriting-based model transformation, therefore we provide a highly generic solution which can be easily modified, and analyzed with the techniques borrowed from the field of graph rewriting. The termination analysis for the presented method is also provided

Load Characterization for Distributed Virtual Environments

    Get PDF
Due to their sensitivity to user positions, actions, and visibility, Distributed Virtual Environments (DVEs) are well served through a focused load characterization effort. Quantified load can then be evaluated through models of the system behavior, resulting in expected behavior. A discussion of determining some characterized load from system requirements and instrumenting a DVE to provide validation metrics is also provided

Decentralized Probabilistic World Modeling with Cooperative Sensing

    Get PDF
Drawing on the projected increase in computing power, solid-state storage and network communication capacity to be available on personal mobile devices, we propose to build and maintain without prior knowledge a fully distributed decentralized large-scale model of the physical world around us using probabilistic methods. We envisage that, by using the multimodal sensing capabilities of modern personal devices, such a probabilistic world model can be constructed as a collaborative effort of a community of participants, where the model data is redundantly stored on individual devices and updated and refined through short-range wireless peer-to-peer communication. Every device holds model data describing its current surroundings, and obtains model data from others when moving into unknown territory. The model represents common spatio-temporal patterns as observed by multiple participants, so that rogue participants can not easily insert false data and only patterns of general applicability dominate. This paper aims to describe – at a conceptual level – an approach for building such a distributed world model. As one possible world modeling approach, it discusses compositional hierarchies, to fuse the data from multiple sensors available on mobile devices in a bottom-up way. Furthermore, it focuses on the intertwining between building a decentralized cooperative world model and the opportunistic communication between participants

    Euler Diagram Transformations

    Get PDF
Euler diagrams are a visual language which are used for purposes such as the presentation of set-based data or as the basis of visual logical languages which can be utilised for software specification and reasoning. Such Euler diagram reasoning systems tend to be defined at an abstract level, and the concrete level is simply a visualisation of an abstract model, thereby capturing some subset of the usual boolean logic. The visualisation process tends to be divorced from the data transformation process thereby affecting the user's mental map and reducing the effectiveness of the diagrammatic notation. Furthermore, geometric and topological constraints, called wellformedness conditions, are often placed on the concrete diagrams to try to reduce human comprehension errors, and the effects of these conditions are not modelled in these systems. We view Euler diagrams as a type of graph, where the faces that are present are the key features that convey information and we provide transformations at the dual graph level that correspond to transformations of Euler diagrams, both in terms of editing moves and logical reasoning moves. This original approach gives a correspondence between manipulations of diagrams at an abstract level (such as logical reasoning steps, or simply an update of information) and the manipulation at a concrete level. Thus we facilitate the presentation of diagram changes in a manner that preserves the mental map. The approach will facilitate the realisation of reasoning systems at the concrete level; this has the potential to provide diagrammatic reasoning systems that are inherently different from symbolic logics due to natural geometric constraints. We provide a particular concrete transformation system which preserves the important criteria of planarity and connectivity, which may form part of a framework encompassing multiple concrete systems each adhering to different sets of wellformedness conditions

Designing a Platform for Flexible and Performant Virtual Routers on Commodity Hardware.

    Get PDF
Multi-core CPUs, along with recent advances in memory and buses, render commodity hardware a strong candidate for software router virtualization. In this context, we present the design of a new platform for virtual routers on x86 hardware. We also elaborate on our design choices in order to achieve both high performance and flexibility for packet processing

Gene Expression with General Purpose Graph Rewriting Systems

    Get PDF
We show that a general purpose graph rewriting system (GRS) nowadays is capable of simulating gene expression, the intra-cellular synthesis of proteins. The model organism we use is one of the best-studied prokaryotic life-forms in genetics, the E. coli bacteria. Our graph representation of the E. coli DNA consists of 23 Million graph elements. In our case study we correctly synthesize the proteins of 30 consecutive genes. In this paper we describe our approach as well as our observations. Further on, we discuss some potential extensions to GRSs that would support more sophisticated simulations

    Prediction-based Decentralized Routing Algorithm

    Get PDF
We introduce a new efficient routing algorithm called Prediction-based Decentralized Routing algorithm (PDR), which is based on the Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) meta-heuristics. In our approach, an ant uses a combination of the link state information and the predicted link load instead of the ant's trip time to determine the amount of pheromone to deposit. A Feed Forward Neural Network (FFNN) is used to build adaptive traffic predictors which capture the actual traffic behaviour. We study two performance parameters: the rejection ratio and the percentage of accepted bandwidth under two different network load conditions. We show that our algorithm reduces the rejection ratio of requests and achieves a higher throughput when compared to Shortest Path First and Widest Shortest Path algorithms

Using System Virtualization to Create Virtualized Networks

    Get PDF
The method of system virtualization is very popular for the use in data centers and desktop virtualization today. In this work, system virtualization is applied to core network elements (routers and links) in order to create a virtualized network. The selection of this virtualization method crucially determines the emerging network model. The network model consists of virtual networks, virtual routers, and virtual links that form overlays on top of the physical network. The properties, features, and limitations of this network model are analyzed and described in this paper. Additionally, a proof of concept implementation using currently available technology and infrastructure is presented. Finally the dynamic configurability of virtual resources in such a system virtualization based virtualized network is evaluated
