Theoretical Procedure on the Hydrostatic Stability of Ships (Part 2 : ) Stable Attitude in an Inclined State

    Get PDF
P(論文)In this paper, a theoretical treatment on the hydrostatic stability of ships is presented. As the simplest hull form, a columnar ship with rectangular cross-section, which is made of homogeneous squared timber with arbitrary breadth and material, is chosen. In the Part 2 of this theme, the stable attitude in an inclined state of the ship, which is not stable in the upright state with horizontal deck, is analyzed by means of ship's hydrostatics. By doing so, the dependence of the inclined attitude on the breadth and material of the ship will be clarified.departmental bulletin pape

Creating Connections--Tetralemma as a Logic Leading to Peace

    Get PDF
P(論文)In Nagasaki, peace is represented by symbols such as the dove, Nagasaki and Hiroshima, and thought through a frame of victimhood nationalism built up by the United States and China after World War II. The consciousness of peace is not based on feelings in one's life. In order to rebuild peace from the perspective of the entire planet on which all living things coexist, it is necessary to leave dualism behind and rely on the logic of tetralemma, which exhausts all cases of human thought without falling into dilemmas. When children think of themselves after an experience of a story of greening by planting poplars in a desert of China, we learn that children’s consciousness is flexible. This process of jumping to underlying universality can be understood by the logic of tetralemma: 1) affirmation, 2) negation, 3) negation of affirmation and negation, and 4) affirmation of affirmation and negation. The third aspect of tetralemma is the core of this logic, evidenced by Nagarjuna and further elaborated on by Yamauchi Tokuryu (1974). Before the moral education lesson on life, the children thought about who they are by using character attributions and negations in relation to local nature. However, after the lesson of the travel story that is local to the Chinese desert, they lost their attribution and negation related to local nature and found that they themselves are essentially both life and greening together by planting poplars. After their activity as an actor, a term inspired by Bruno Latour, in the global task of greening, they could witness the restoration of living creatures on earth. The fundamental negation process of tetralemma creates underlying universality of life which then creates peace in connection with their everyday lives. We can be an actor by using the logic of tetralemma and making fundamental relations with younger generations, who are flexible in their learning and can act for the future of our sustainability.departmental bulletin pape

Basis Investigation on Practical Use of Weld Defects Inspection using Ultrasonic Phased Array at Shipbuilding Field

    Get PDF
Welding of hull structural materials is an indispensable technique for the ship construction. If a serious defect exists in a welded joint and grows up, it can lead to the damage of the ship structure, and finally to some significant accidents, such as pollutant spills or danger to the life of crew member. As conventional techniques to check the internal defect in welded joints, radiographic testing (RT) and ultrasonic testing (UT) are used. Recently, thanks to the rapid progress and spread of digital technology in various fields, an inspection technique of phased array ultrasonic testing combining visualization technology has been released, which can make it possible to inspect the internal defect in welded joint just after welding and check the defect visually on site. The inspection technique like this is expected to contribute to the improvement of welding technology and upgrading the skills of welding engineers. In this study, to utilize the phased array ultrasonic testing to the ship construction, many types of welded joint specimens with various welding defects were prepared and inspected for these internal defects in the welded joints by phased array ultrasonic testing. In addition, these results were evaluated, comparing with the inspection results by radiographic testing.departmental bulletin pape

A Proposal for Improving the Management Engineering Course Website--Based on the search cost for information items viewed on smartphones

    Get PDF
P(論文)This study aims to propose measures for improving the website of the Management Engineering Course at Nagasaki Institute of Applied Science. To achieve this goal, we will first identify the necessary information items for the student recruitment website, and define the cost of searching for each item as the "search cost". We will then compare the search costs of this website with that of a university offering similar departments and courses. Additionally, we will investigate the importance of each information item, and compare the weighted search costs that take this into consideration. Finally, based on the knowledge gained, we will propose improvement measures.departmental bulletin pape

A Study on Fatigue Strength of Cruciform Welded Joints of Duplex Stainless-Clad Steel Plates for Chemical Tankers

    Get PDF
On the utilization of duplex stainless-clad steel plate and the solid steel plate in the cargo tank structure of chemical tanker, most important items to know in the design of the construction is fatigue strength of the cruciform welded joint between the transverse bulkhead and double bottom. In this study, we conducted the fatigue tests using the specimens of the cruciform welded joints composed of duplex stainless SUS329J3L-clad steel plate, SUS329J3L solid steel plate and mild steel plate. As a result, it is shown that duplex stainless SUS329J3L-clad steel plate and SUS329J3L solid steel plate can be sufficiently utilized into the cargo tank structure of chemical tanker.departmental bulletin pape

Rodney H. Powers and the Nagasaki Foreign Settlement as Seen by his Grandson

    Get PDF
P(論文)Rodney H. Powers (1836.5.5-1909.8.9) ran a successful business in the Nagasaki Foreign Settlement for almost forty years through the Meiji Period of Japan, with a peak during the 1880s and 1900s. Sugimoto Masao was his only grandchild, but his mother Toyo separated from Powers before giving birth. Recently, it was found that Masao left a hand-written manuscript, titled Haha-no-zanzō (The Afterglow of my Mother)," which had been unattended for years. The manuscript provides significant new material for research on the Nagasaki Foreign Settlement. The present article analyzes the content of the manuscript and the activities of Rodney H. Powers as seen by his only grandson. The results will help to clarify the realities of life and work in the Nagasaki Foreign Settlement.departmental bulletin pape
