Food systems' vulnerability due to the combined effects of socio-economic crises means that neglected and under-utilized crops’ (NUS) valorization must be taken into account in national agricultural policies. In pursuit of this objective, the research endeavours to undertake a comprehensive analysis of local stakeholders' perceptions of territorial agricultural policies for NUS valorization. Additionally, it seeks to identify the key determinants and adaptation strategies for NUS valorization in Benin. The research was conducted utilising an analytical model that was conceived based on an actor-oriented approach. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 producers and 45 representatives of various organizations involved. They are chosen for their strong involvement in NUS enhancement. The data collated pertains to the valorization of NUS, as well as perceptions, mobilised resources and initiated actions between the years 2011 and 2024. The data were analysed using the χ² test of independence, Correspondence Factorial Analysis and discourse analysis. The results of the study revealed a total of 12 perceptions linked to agricultural policies and 12 adaptation strategies. The perception was found to be contingent upon the organizational type. The value-adding adaptation strategies developed in response to agricultural policies were diversification of activities, donation of NUS seeds between producers, implementation of business models for the promotion of NUSs, certification and exposure of NUS-derived products to livers, and visibility and dissemination of NUSs
Structure, geometry and piezometry of the Turonian-Coniacian aquifer captured in the Benin-Togo Coastal Sedimentary Basin
The Kéta Basin in Benin and Togo is located in the tropical zone between the equator and the Tropic of Cancer, between parallels 6° 10' and 7° 75' north latitude and meridians 1° 0' and 2° 48' east longitude. The study area occupies the southern tip of the two countries, with the Mono River forming the border. The Turonian-Coniacian aquifer, the oldest aquifer unit in the coastal sedimentary basin, is the subject of this study. This study aims to determine the structure, geometry and piezometry of this aquifer. Three cross-sections were created (Benin and Togo) using the traditional method, combining topographical maps, graph paper and Qgis 2.18.15. Piezometry was then carried out in three stages: determining the altitudes of the measurement points, calculating the piezometric levels and interpolating the calculated piezometric levels. The piezometric map was produced using Excel, Surfer 11 and Qgis 2.18.15 in succession. All these methods indicate that the Coniacian Turonian aquifer outcrops to the north of the northern plateaus of the Benin-Togo Coastal Sedimentary Basin. As the flow direction is mainly north-south, it can be deduced that the aquifer is fed by rainwater infiltration at its outcrop areas.
The present study aims to elaborate a strategic prospecting guide for gold mineralization in the Wamba territory in the Democratic Republic of Congo, considering mineralization indicators using remote sensing and the Geographic Information System. The objective is to highlight, from remote sensing, the relationship between lithology, lineaments and mineralization in order to determine the sites likely to be mineralized with gold. The methodological approach integrates geological information acquired from Landsat8 images and a multi-criteria GIS analysis. By superimposing the various lithology maps, lineaments and by considering indicators of gold mineralization, it was possible to zonally identify sites likely to contain concentrations of gold ores in the Wamba territory. Six gold exploration targets have been identified, three of which are considered highly prospective for gold
Diversity in Climate Negotiations: Lessons for Inclusive Urban Planning and Smarter Mobility
This paper examines the evolving role of stakeholder diversity in United Nations climate negotiations, with a particular focus on the Conferences of the Parties (COP) under the UNFCCC. Using a qualitative comparative case study method, it analyzes documentation from six key COPs (2009-2024) and three urban planning cases. The study identifies how the inclusion of civil society, youth, indigenous groups, and private sector actors has shaped negotiation dynamics and contributed to broader climate discourse. A key finding is that while stakeholder diversity enhances legitimacy and knowledge sharing, its impact on emission outcomes remains limited without stronger institutional linkages. Drawing on COP documentation and selected case examples, the study identifies key mechanisms of engagement and governance that can inform urban planning and transport strategies. The analysis reveals that structured stakeholder constituencies, as seen in the UNFCCC, offer a transferable model for urban governance. The paper proposes a transferable governance model that adapts multilateral negotiation principles - such as inclusive decision-making, transparency, and knowledge sharing - to local climate resilience efforts. It introduces a conceptual Knowledge Management Framework designed to support cross-sectoral collaboration and evidence-based planning in urban contexts
Discrimination Experienced by ‘Third-Country National’ Women Working in Malta
‘Third-country national’ (TCN) women in the EU tend to experience discrimination both as women and as migrants, in the workplace and in the ‘receiving’ society. This article focuses on a recurring cluster of issues that emerged around the theme of discrimination, over the course of 19 interviews with ‘third-country national’ women from South Asian countries working in Malta. More specifically, the study explores situatedness and lived experience through an intersectional feminist approach, taking into account the individual socioeconomic conditions as well as aspects such as gender, nationality, religion, culture, educational level, and the occupation of the informants. The data was analysed using thematic analysis and led to the emergence of four key themes relating to discrimination, which proved to be interlinked: the relationship between intersecting factors; everyday discrimination; discriminatory procedures at the local and EU level; and sexual harassment. We found that workplace discrimination and broader social discriminatory practices often co-occur and are mutually reinforcing, while having an effect on the individual’s general quality of life and personal well-being. Such discrimination also interlinks with practices, power structures, and perceptions at transnational, EU, national, organisational, and local social levels
The study was conducted in Bunkeya, a rural town in the Lubudi territory, Lualaba province, in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). It aimed to characterize the diversity of rice-farming systems and to identify the factors explaining their heterogeneity. This area offers natural conditions favorable to agriculture. A mixed methodological approach was adopted, combining Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Hierarchical Ascendant Classification (HAC), and logistic regression. The PCA highlighted seniority in rice cultivation, cultivated area, access to inputs, and agricultural income as the main factors of differentiation. Three types of farms were identified: a subsistence group with low input use, an intermediate group, and a high-performing group that is better organized and more profitable. The analysis of explanatory factors revealed four key variables: the level of education, years of experience in rice farming, the production system used, and access to credit, the latter playing a decisive role in the intensification of agricultural systems
Comoé National Park, located in northern Côte d’Ivoire, is a rich ecosystem but faces anthropogenic and climatic pressures despite its protected status. This study analyzes land cover changes in the southern half of the park between 2002, 2012, and 2022 using LANDSAT satellite imagery. The multi-temporal methodology, validated by confusion matrices, quantifies changes between land cover classes. The vegetation dynamics reveal two contrasting phases. From 2002 to 2012, dense forests strongly declined (-51%) while savannas slightly increased. From 2012 to 2022, partial regeneration occurred in dense forests (+47%) and in open forests/wooded savannas (+33.5%), accompanied by a slight decrease in savannas. Over the entire period, shrub savannas showed the greatest stability (89.6%), whereas forest formations were more vulnerable to change, alongside a slight increase in bare soils, indicating human and climatic pressures. Additionally, the hydrographic network has been significantly expanded, illustrating major structural changes. These results reflect the combined influence of natural and human factors. Despite evident resilience, habitat fragmentation and ongoing pressures require integrated management, notably ecological corridor restoration and fire management, to ensure long-term biological conservation
Palm oil and shea butter are vegetable oils rich in saturated fatty acids, whose excessive consumption may disrupt lipid metabolism. This study aimed to evaluate the chronic effects of diets enriched with crude palm oil (Hpb) and shea butter (Bk), at concentrations of 15% and 30%, on nutritional parameters in Wistar rats over a six-month period. Eighty rats (male and female) were divided into five groups: one control group fed a standard diet, two Hpb groups (15% and 30%), and two Bk groups (15% and 30%). The parameters assessed included food intake index, digestibility index, weight gain, and energy and protein efficiency. Diets enriched at 15% were well tolerated, with significant weight gain (126.30 ± 10.61 g for Hpb 15% vs. 103.10 ± 9.97 g for the control). In contrast, diets enriched at 30% led to reduced food intake (31.28 ± 5.84 g for Bk 30%), lower weight gain (52.63 ± 9.30 g), and increased intra-abdominal fat accumulation (MRTA: 5.04 ± 0.54% for Hpb 30%). These findings indicate that lipid concentration influences digestibility, nutritional efficiency, and fat distribution. Moderate supplementation (15%) with Hpb or Bk appears metabolically favorable, whereas higher concentrations (30%) impair nutritional tolerance and may promote the development of metabolic disorders. These results provide valuable insights for designing safer dietary formulations and open avenues for research on the differential effects of saturated fats in the prevention of metabolic diseases
This article analyzes the impacts of the training and integration program for rural youth, implemented by RESOPP between 2016 and 2024, on the beneficiaries and their farms in the regions of Thiès and Louga. For this analysis, descriptive statistical methods were applied to a sample of 80 rural youth, consisting of 40 program beneficiaries and 40 control participants. Data were collected through a questionnaire administered via the Kobotoolbox application. The findings indicate that the program had an overall positive effect on both the beneficiaries and their farming activities. Economically, it facilitated better professional integration, with most participants becoming entrepreneurs (61,40 %) in the agriculture and livestock sectors. These entrepreneurial dynamics contributed to an increase in their average income. These entrepreneurial dynamics contributed to an increase in their average income from 67,487 CFA francs to 109,243 CFA francs over the period 2016–2024. On the social level, the program has reduced unemployment by 76.25% among those surveyed, especially among beneficiaries. This has enabled them to improve their access to sufficient and nutritious food, thanks to the productive activities they have developed. At the farm level, significant improvements were observed: agricultural yields increased due to enhanced technical skills among young farmers, while in the livestock sector, better farm management practices were recorded
Europe and the Digital Enlightenment: Between Autonomy and Algorithmic Power
This study asks whether Europe is truly living up to its Enlightenment heritage in the digital age, or whether it is drifting away from Kant’s ideal of autonomy and moving closer to Foucault’s world of invisible algorithmic control. The text compares Kant’s and Foucault’s views on the Enlightenment and explores how digital technologies-like AI and algorithms-influence personal freedom and social norms. The key question is: Are we thinking for ourselves online, or do algorithms make our choices for us? Western Europe tries to protect autonomy with laws like GDPR or DSA, but can freedom actually be guaranteed by rules from outside? Beyond this philosophical contrast, the study finds that Europe’s digital landscape reveals a growing simulation of autonomy: individuals believe they act freely, yet their actions are increasingly structured by algorithmic systems. Western Europe institutionalizes critical reason, while Eastern Europe exhibits fragmented digital autonomy shaped by distrust and weak institutions. The research concludes that Europe’s Enlightenment legacy can survive only if autonomy is redefined as technological understanding and critical reflection, rather than formal compliance
